Was it out of hate that John the Baptist said

Matthew 3:7
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Was out of Love or hate that Jusus told the Pharisees and scribes

“And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.” Mark 7:9

Was it out of Hate that Jesus said:

Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
Matthew 22:29

Love.

Sometimes the most loving thing is say something shocking, to hopefully awaken people from their complacency. Sort of like, "If your hand offends you, cut it off"!

6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

Truth is always spoken out of love--even if it hurts.
Example: It is not a sadistic hobby to slam the RC's that post on this board, but rather to show them their error, that they might one day repent and trust Christ as Savior. In some cases harsh words are used, as John used them.

Excellent scripture Bob. People need to meditate on that one for awhile.

Most people however do not bother to pray and ask God about scripture like that.

They just go on doing what they are doing.

Thinking about these verses, it occurs to me that the remarks are not only for those directly addressed, but as a warning for others. The others needed the warning, and it would be a failure of love if they did not receive adequate warning . . .

But exactly how do we reconcile that one with "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt?" or "If anyone be caught in a fault, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of meekness?"

Meekness is power under control (not milk toast).
Moreover, Christ was showing grace seasoned with salt when he said:

Matthew 23:27 - Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

He was rebuking the scribes and Pharisees that is grace he did it sharply that is salt.
