I am KJVO. When trying to understand scripture, is it acceptable to:

    1) rely on my personal knowledge and the Holy Spirit alone

    2) consult old dictionaries (Webster's 1828)

    3) consult modern historical dictionaries (Oxford English Dictionary)

    4) Consult old versions (Geneva, etc)

    5) Consult the Greek and Hebrew (through Strong's, interlinears, Englishman's concordances, etc.)

    6) Consult modern versions on a verse-by-verse basis

    7) Read modern versions alongside the AV, but keep in mind the AV is authoritative.

What do you think? How do you study the KJV?

According to Gail Riplinger, the KJV has
    a "built-in dictionary" that gives a
perfect definition of all its own words.

Why then would a KJV-only advocate ever
need to consult a dictionary when studying
    the KJV?

I believe you should use all the resources at your disposal, especially the 1828 dictionary. However, remember that it is the KJV that is THE BIBLE!

Have you considered comparing the KJV translation to other translations?

I've basically 1-6 most of the time, 1-7 sometimes, but wondering if I should stick with 1-3.

I'm NASB only*. When I try to read and understand the scripture, is it appropriate to consider, sometimes, what the King James version says?

    *white lie for teaching purposes

How should I study the Bible?

I think with a heart to seek Him. Desiring to understand the Testimony of Jesus Christ which is the Spirit of prophesy.

I use a $5 softback bible but I go online sometimes for verses if I need them.

You don't need all the "gear" just a heart that seeks God is all.

    God bless

I like to study the King James Version & the English Standard Version at the same time. If I have to I will look up words in the Oxford English Dictionary.

All these answer are nice. But they miss the point, IMO.

Why do you want to study?

I would submit that it is for one reason only. As given in Scripture. "Study to shew thyself approved unot God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

This is the only reason to study. Therefore, unless the first thing you do is pray for guidance, you study is fruitless. You can use a million versions, commentaries, dictionaries, concordances, etc. and get nowhere.

"Howbeit, when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you."

Begin here and you can't go wrong. Prayer first.
I rarely use anything else but my Bible and a concordance and a good dictionary. BTW, Moody rarely used anything but his Bible. I would submit he did fine work for the glory of God.

    In His service;
    Jim

I agree with Jim, The Pharisees had all the "original texts" and they missed it.

All good stuff but if you need a little more help and have a limited pocketbook go to E-Sword on the net, it's free download.
