What does it mean to have UNCTION from the Holy one? Anyone who has UNCTION does not need to ask anyone anything because they know all things. First John 2:20-25. I don't know anyone like this do you?

    Well....there's me. [IMG]

Just kidding, I don't know everything, but this verse isn't talking about people who supernaturally know everything.

Jesus Christ, Himself, doesn't even know the time of His return, so how could any mere mortal human "know everything."?

This verse, in it's context, is really talking about me and you and all christians.

John was advising them on people who were "antichrists"......people who had gone out from the body of believers and never came back to the flock. They were never saved to begin with.

Then he says, (my paraphrasing here), that true christians, because they have been annointed by the Holy Spirit, understand the truth of God and understand what it means to be saved and understand holy "truth" in general.

Not that they have knowledge of everything, like God does, but that they know all things as in "truth".

    Peace-

the anointing in 1 John is referring to the truth of who Christ is -- that Jesus is the Christ (v. 22). HE is THE Truth, and we know Him, and therefore know the Truth and will not be deceived by any antichrist.

I agree with Helen that He is simply saying
that those that are saved know who their Savior is. That Jesus is the Christ The Son of God.

    John, chapter 14
6": Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth , and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

    1 John, chapter 2
"21": I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth . (That Jesus cannont lie and He is the Truth) .

The word translated "an unction" is, in the Greek, chrisma which comes from the Greek root chrio, which means to annoint. The speaks to the annointing of the Holy Spirit which is given to all believers. We also know, through scripture, that the Holy Spirit teaches us the things of God and is how we can discern spiritual truth.

The word translated as "know" here is eido, which means something different than knowing something by learning. What this word means is knowing something by intuition rather than through experiential or book knowledge. The intuitive "knowing" here is a direct result of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer.

So, the "unction" is the giving (annointing) of the believer that happens at salvation, and is the way and means of knowing/discerning spiritual truths. This is what John is saying, that we don't have to read to know certian things since, through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, we are able to have knowledge that unbelievers do not have and can not have.

I do not know all things, but I am able to know whatever I need to know to accomplish God's will in my life and ministry. This is done through the Spirit. Just remember the idea is not "book smarts" but a divine gift of God's grace that enables us to know what we need to, when we need to, to accomplish His will.
