Whose names were changed or given personally by God?

    Any additions here? Anyone I am leaving out? Can you guys add to this short list of people in the family of God, who God personally and specifically changed their names and told them what He would do with them in His plan.

    Please include what God said at the time He changed their names, and how God said He planned to use these people in His plan of salvation.

    So far I have 5: Abraham & Sarah, Isaac, Israel, Peter

    I've seen some people include "Saul/Paul" in this kind of list, but I don't think the scriptures ever actually say that God made that change.

    And of course Jesus gave the name "Boanerges" to James and John, but not with any real discussion of their role in his plan.

    Just a note.. Saul & Paul aren't two separate names; they're the same name in different languages. I could be wrong, but I think Saul is the Hebrew form & Paul is the Greek form, from a cultural perspective.

    Thanks, Mark. I couldn't find who changed Paul's name or why. Carson makes sense here. Since Scripture doesn't attribute God to having changed it, and gives no reason for different name, I haven't included it.

    I overlooked the naming of James and John to the joint name Sons of Thunder. I wonder if this has to do with the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ.

    One addition to your list:

    While he retains the name "Solomon" later and throughout the text, God did instruct Nathan to call the baby Jedidiah. 2Samuel 12:25

    John the Baptist and Jesus are the first to come to mind. Hosea's children were all named by the Lord as well. Adam would qualify. I could find many, many examples of this!

    I am looking for name changes, and God's stated plan for the name change.

    I believe you can leave the post as is. Jacob's name was changed to Israel.

    Genesis 32:27
    So he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob."

    Genesis 32:28
    He said, "Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed."

    Isaac wasn't a change , but God stated this at the "name change" of parents Abraham and Sarah the reason and plan for naming the baby that and what He would do with him. The three seem to be a package deal.

    I like that. Just goes to show how important names are to God. The name changes given by God and revealed in Holy Scripture and the reasons God gives for these changes are very significant. Seems we all have a unique role in Salvation History.

    The more I think about Clint's post the more it seems that since we all have names given to us by God that there must be reasons for God to reveal certain names as important enough to be to be changed. So, important that He reveals in Holy Scripture a name change and the plan of how he will use that person.

    So far I have Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Israel, Peter, and the “Sons of Thunder” although that seems to be more of a title for those two than a real name change, and Jesus didn’t give His reason for it, so I think I will drop it from this specific list.

    Now I have Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Israel, and Peter again. I am think of dropping Isaac since it wasn't a name change. How about Abraham, Sarah, Israel, and Peter ? These seem to be the only real "name changes" by God with God's revelation about his plan for them in Salvation History.
