Did he give back the silver and hang himself or did he buy a field with it and died there (as is referenced in Acts 1). I'm confused.

I thought that the Jewish leaders bought the field with the money because they could not put it back in the treasury because it was blood money (see Matt. 27:3-10). Notice, in both Matthew and Acts the field's name is "Field of Blood," so I would assume it is the same field. I would guess that technically Judas did "buy" the field, because even though the priests had the money it was his "blood money."

As to his bursting or hanging himself, I heard one solution that said he hung himself, possibly even on a tree on the side of a hill or cliff, and after a while the rope or branch could have broken and he fell and burst open. However, you would not necessarily need a tree on a hill.

In my feeble mind I could understand why the priests would buy the field in which Judas hung himself/burst open in. It makes sense to me. [IMG]

That field if memory serves me correct was a potters field which would have been used for the sourcing of clay I guess.

When I read this thread topic, I thought it might be about Judas' eternal destiny. I've read many good articles on both sides of the issue. I hope God forgave him, but I suspect He didn't.

Impossible for us to know, isn't it? Fortunately, it's God's decision and not mine.

Did Judas understand what he was doing? Or did he think that he really was doing what Jesus wanted? I really don't know.

Did Judas repent of it before the final moments of his death? I sure don't know.

    Only God knows.

He threw back the money in the middle of Court of Caiphas and then went out and hanged himself.

The Jews then used that money to buy the potter's field. A place to bury those who had nowhere else they could be burried.
