Boris, I can't get the link below to show up so you can read about how the "gift of tongues" and the "baptism of the Holy Ghost" did not cease.

If you would like, I think I can send it by e-mail, but only upon your request. Just keep in mind that the operation of "tongues" according to the Bible has not ceased.

Could you please show me just where tongues were used, or even mentioned all throughout the New Testament?

It only mentions tongues 3 times in the book of Acts, Paul corrects the Corinthians in the proper use of tongues in 1 Corinthians 12-14. Where else are tongues used or mentioned? How much of a percentage of scripture would you say actually speaks of tongues?

He said it because it would confuse them, he said it, to keep them from doing it. Paul said people would think they were mad because people would think that! What was his point? Don't speak in tongues because people will think you are mad, instead prophesy!

If all speak in tongues = Unbelievers will think you are mad

If all prophesy = Unbelievers will worship God

Throughout the entire chapter Paul is telling you to seek edifying the church, not yourself. He says to edify the church you are better to prophesy!

Because when you use a spiritual gift that God gave you and no one understands what it means, then only God can know what he is saying...finish the verse and read on...

God already knows the message, so there is no need for you to speak to God alone. If you are zealous for a spiritual gift, seek one that edifys the church, not yourself.

Read the entire chapter and find what Paul was really saying!

    ~Lorelei

I have to go now, I will try to get to other posts later. I just don't have the time that I used to!

Acts 19:4, so they were baptized in water for the remission of their sins. The baptism that Paul referred to, was the baptism of Fire[Naomi]

"Naomi~I had meant to come back to this on pg.7, but could you explain 'the baptism of Fire' to me? I get different answers around here. Thanky.

p.s. you & MEE aren't too far off with your descriptions of the granny, & yes, my door is always open to receive company & there's always something good cooked. I don't wear britches tho' I do wear camouflage skirts, but my favorite is a confederate-flag one. My hair is auburnish, long, pulled up in a haphazardly way. My two favorite sayings are: "I'm heaven-bound with the hammer down" & of course, "lock & load" ;) hahaha!

    Naomi:

Have you forgotten my request? I would especially like a response to my last question about why we are saved, yet do not speak in tongues. It was your observation that we can be saved and not speak in tongues. That is a little confusing to me. Thanks in advance. :D

    God Bless.........Alex

I would need more time for this one! lol! I will get back to this later.

I am not sure what percentage, but, I know that the gifts of the spirit are discussed throughout the scriptures.

Yes! In the church services. He was giving instruction for the use of tongues.

    Alex,
Salvation is not based upon speaking in tongues, salvation is based upon putting your trust in Jesus! It is by grace ye are saved through Faith....
No where in scripture does it say, salvation is through speaking in tongues.

Naomi, It is nice to see you keeping your good attitude and sense of humor through all this.
    You wrote:

"""Paul said tongues will fade away when Jesus comes back, and we see Him face to face"""

Here is one of the big issues we have in this discussion. Your point above is not at all accurate. I can only say this simply, though my brother "Walguy" put a detailed explanation on a different thread, so here it goes. When Paul said that tongues, prophecy, and knowledge would cease he used a different verb for tongues then he did the other two. Was this by chance? I think we both agree the Bible is written with much care and that God through Paul chose his words wisely. The verb used for P and K says that they will end when something happens (i.e. when that which is perfect comes) For tongues a reflexative verb is used and it means will fade away BY THEMSELVES, with nothing acting on them. That is the Truth and what is written when looking at the Greek words. So being that you are mistaken in your above statement could it be you are mistaken about tongues in general??? ;)

Also, My guess is that you believe that the Gift of healing is in operation, right? If so, and if we can seek any gift, as you have said, why not seek that gift? Why not seek a gift that would allow you to make the blind see, the deaf hear, the lame leap and the dumb speak. Wouldn't that be the gift to have, not one you use in your closet? [IMG]

Naomi, I noticed you, or actually anyone, has said they are interested in what I look like. Is that because I come across as harsh or something? :( If I do I apoligise as I do seek to do all things in my life in Christian compassion and love [IMG]

    In Christian love and truth,
    Brian

I will show you what "Baptism in Fire" is all about![Naomi]

"Naomi, all I can say to that is YIKES! I don't think so! ;) I had really hoped that's one question I'd get a straight answer to.

Today's tongues-movement is NOT Scriptural!!! I think you, MEE, Oneness & the few others who have posted do believe this~I mean, there has been so much proof, evidence, via scriptures given to you by loving, caring, brilliant minds(Naomi, Don, DHK, etc), that I don't see why you can't see how you're being deceived...but therein lies the problem, I guess & false-teaching twists the Scriptures to justify and defend their practices.

Please believe me when I tell you that I pray that the REAL Holy Spirit will lead you into all Truth, as well as away form ALL of satan's lies!

ATTENTION BRIGUY: "The only reason I didn't put your name down, is I was just remembering the ones that were on the first thread where I first met Oneness, MEE, etc...but I imagine you as being young & sandy-haired, with a cute smile. [IMG]

The way I interpret the passage is that tongue-speaking was causing mass confusion in this church, so Paul laid down requirements.

Baptists don't like to admit it, but Paul does say "forbid not to speak with tongues." However, the requirements he laid down are violated by almost all charismatic movements today, so tongues are not used at all properly today. Paul himself said he spoke with tongues, but he'd rather speak and be easily understood. These tongues are talking about "an unknown tongue," not the different languages of Pentecost.

I've grown up all my life being told tongues are heresy...I don't particularly like them, nor do I wish to speak in them. I feel our charismatic friends disobey the Scripture in their use of them. But nowhere does Paul say, "From now on, the gift of tongues is no more."

Paul clearly says to speak clearly in the church...at home, he says, speak in tongues, do whatever you want.

Therefore, I think tongues have no place in the church not because they are the only gift that no longer exists, but because mass confusion erupts in so much random-tongue speaking without interpretation, which Paul said is a must.

    A few comments Undum:
"The way I interpret the passage is that tongue-speaking was causing mass confusion in this church, so Paul laid down requirements."

"Baptists don't like to admit it, but Paul does say "forbid not to speak with tongues.""
--A more accurate interpretation of that verse, taking the context into consideration is "Forbid not to speak in tongues (if you are living in the first century). Tongues were a sign to the unbelieving Jew, specifically of the Apostolic times--those that had crucified the Saviour, and now were about to reject the message of salvation for a final time and be judged with a terrible judgement--the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. 1Cor.14:21, Paul quotes from Isa.68:11, when the Jews were taken into captivity, their city--Jerusalem was destroyed, and they heard people speak in tongues (languages) the language of the Ninevites. Now for a second time God is giving them the same warning, a sign of languages. They heard different languages at Pentecost. They are still occasionally hearing believers speak miraculously in different foreign languages. The purpose is to authenticate the gospel message to the unbelieving Jew, to tell them that a terrible time of judgement is coming if they reject this sign and this message. They did reject it. Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 A.D. Tongues ceased. There was no more need of them.

"However, the requirements he laid down are violated by almost all charismatic movements today, so tongues are not used at all properly today. Paul himself said he spoke with tongues, but he'd rather speak and be easily understood. These tongues are talking about "an unknown tongue," not the different languages of Pentecost."
---Your last statement is absolutely wrong. The tongues at Pentecost were different languages, as were all other known cases of Biblical tongues. The word "unknown" is not even in the Greek. Look in your KJV. It is an italicized word, meaning that the translators inserted it. They were tongues, like your "mother tongue," languages, other languages, not always known to the one speaking, but known to the one receiving the message. There is no such thing as a completely unknown tongue.

"I've grown up all my life being told tongues are heresy...I don't particularly like them, nor do I wish to speak in them. I feel our charismatic friends disobey the Scripture in their use of them. But nowhere does Paul say, "From now on, the gift of tongues is no more.""
--A proper study of 1Cor. 13:8-13 along with 1Cor.14:21,22 tell us that the gift is no longer for today.

"Paul clearly says to speak clearly in the church...at home, he says, speak in tongues, do whatever you want."
--Paul clearly says to the Corinthian church to speak in tongues--applicable only to the first century churches. He never tells us to whatever we want at home or anywhere else. He never tells us to disobey Scripture. He never tells us to sin. In fact here is what he does tell us:

1Cor.6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
--That does not include a carnal experience called gibberish (the modern-day tongues movement) which only began around 1900, and was unheard of since 70 A.D.

DHK, don't you know by now that the NT church was born and recorded in the book of Acts? There are prophecies of it in the OT (Joel 2:28) and anything written after the book of Acts are mostly to "The Church" that was born and recorded in the book of Acts, for instructions as how to live for God.

What do you want me to do, tear out the book of Acts so that you won't have to be reminded that people do speak in tongues when they receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost? Why can't you face the fact that the Gift of the Holy Ghost, with the
evidence of speaking in tongues, IS OF GOD?

Hey, I love the book of Acts as well as the rest of the Bible. KJV, if you please!

It was of God twice I know for sure (Acts 2, Acts 10) [note I changed gift to baptism]. I believe that what happened in Acts 2 and Acts 10 with the apostles and the gentiles speaking in tongues was the baptism of the Spirit and that our reception of the Spirit at water baptism is the gift of the Spirit (Acts 2:38)

    BUT Paul says:

(1 Cor 12:30) "Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?"

You cannot say that a person must speak in tongues to be saved, for NOT ALL SPEAK IN TONGUES.
