White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales, President Bush's nominee for attorney general, got the backing of a group that promotes driver's licenses for illegal aliens, no immigration law enforcement by local and state police and amnesty programs broader than the administration's proposal.

The National Council of La Raza, which bills itself as the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., welcomed the nomination of Gonzales to succeed John Ashcroft.

"We are very encouraged by the Gonzales nomination," said the glowing endorsement by La Raza. "We previously criticized the Bush administration for not having an Hispanic in the cabinet since the departure of former HUD Secretary, now Senator-elect, Mel Martinez. We are pleased that one of the first acts since the president’s re-election both rectifies that situation and marks an historic milestone for the Latino community. Never before has a Hispanic served as head of one of the four major Cabinet posts – secretary of State, Treasury, Defense and attorney general," said Janet Murguia, NCLR executive director and chief operating officer.

But it wasn't just the historical breakthrough that thrilled La Raza. It was also the fact that he is one of their own.

"Alberto Gonzales served with distinction on the board of directors of one of NCLR’s oldest and most respected affiliates, the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans in Houston, Texas," she said. "Moreover, during his tenure as White House counsel, he has been one of the most accessible members of the White House staff to NCLR and other Hispanic organizations."

La Raza supports legislation such as the Civil Liberties Restoration Act, which would roll back policies adopted after Sept. 11 designed to protect national security. It supports the "DREAM Act," which would mandate states to offer in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens – thus providing them with benefits not available to U.S. citizens from other states.

The group also supports legislation to ensure illegal immigrants' ability to obtain driver's licenses.

Apparently Gonzales is a member of LULAC. A lot of liberal and some moderate Hispanics are members.

This isn't the first sign that he isn't a conservative. He's also pro-abortion. That being said, Bush is entitle to nominate anyone who shares his thinking.

The shocking thing is, people are still amazed when Bush acts like a liberal.

Oh the names I've been called on this board, but now we are starting to see....

Aztlan, MEChA, LULAC, La Raza - different arms of the same octopus.

I don't fear those people. The vast majority of Hispanics in this country are here because they or their forebearers didn't want to live in other countries.

They don't want America to be another country; they just want a piece of the action.

Unless we impose draconian measures, however, America will be a different nation in a generation or two.

I like the Mexicans, for the most part. They are nice people, and have great restaraunts.

But La Raza is a leftist political group, and those of that stripe are not going to work in the interest of a Constitutional free republic.

You get what you vote for.

Mexicans are, for the most part, conservatives in all the right ways. They value family and hard work.

They tend to be liberal in the right ways, too, valuing tolerance and opposing racism.

Texas is a richer and better culture for having Texans of Mexican descent.

Gonzales is definitely not typical of Hispanics in his views on abortion and many other things.

That's true, except when it comes to entering our country legally. :(

You know, Lady Eagle, if I was in their place, I think I'd do the same thing.

I know we need to stop it, but I can't blame them a bit for wanting to come here.

I don't blame them, either. I blame our government, particularly liberals like GW Bush and the GOP Congress, for refusing to perform their duty to enforce immigration policy.

Gonzales, of course, is not an immigrant. He's just a liberal. But then, Bush promised he'd not use abortion views as a bar to appointments.

And he's kept his word; Gonzales is pro-abortion.

Well, I don't blame them either for wanting to come here. But you know, if the old US of A is so TERRIBLE, then why is everyone clawing their way to get here, risking life and limb? [IMG]

Here's what our government should do, if they were responsible beings. They should strongly enforce our immigration policies and then work with the Mexican government to crack down on corruption, drug trade, etc., and get policies in place to raise the economy of the Mexican people. Now in some areas, they have it good, like in medical care - wonderful medical care and teaching hospitals in Mexico City. But I digress.

If Mexicans want to come to America so bad, why not have the Mexican people vote on whether or not to become the 51st state? Would that solve a lot of problems or create more? Nothing would appease the radical groups who want to fight the Mexican War all over again, but "what say you?" on the 51st State idea? Dumb? Or sensible?

Did you know that President Polk wanted to annex Mexico after we won the Mexican war?

The prospect of all those new free states (Mexicans were dead set against slavery) killed the idea; the slave states wouldn't hear of it.

If NAFTA goes on, that's what will happen to Mexico, US, and Canada. There's never been a long-lived customs union that didn't eventually lead to political union.

The big boys will not allow statehood for Mexico. Their goal is the destruction of the USA as a sovereign nation, yielding power to a regional government that they will control.

You don't think that it is hard to come across illegally? Let me tell you, it is. Do you know how many people die in the desert (or is it dessert?) trying to make it to this country. We praise our Armed Forces for being willing to die for our country, well these people are willing to die to get to our country, or to have their children born here.

Also, do you know that illegals do most of the work that Americans are 'too good for', and get paid less than teenagers are required by law to get?

As for the tution issue, if you live in that state, you should get the in-state tution, if you don't live in that state, you should pay the out-of state.
