    WELL.....

    You should have checked.....

    GOD said that NOT me.

Proverbs 28:9. He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.

That is usually what "..." means.

    I was quoting.

    Who should you believe?

Yes, that is exactly what I was getting at. I believe that at that moment in my life, when I had left the IFB Church for a more 'liberal' one that I also left my first Love. It was at that time that I slowly but surely lost my connection with God, and stopped praying and studying. By the time I started dating that guy, I was seeking worldly things (romance) rather than thinking of Godly things (marriage). I set myself up for temptation and when it came I was weakened.

Right! I didn't lose my Salvation until AFTER this happened and I COMPLETELY turned away from God, and blamed Him for the rape, and quit church all together. But at the moment of the rape I had taken myself out of fellowship with the Holy Spirit, thereby LOSING my gift of Discernment, and was walking in the flesh.

I would say that I agree in part. We are all followed around day and night by demons. They are called familiar spirits in the Bible. It is what King Saul saw when he went to the witch of Endor. It is what that John guy on TV is encountering when he is able to bring up correct information for people. Those demons are constantly putting temptation in our path. When we are driving and we see a sign for beer, we are tempted. Did the sign tempt us? Ever hear a little voice, "oooh beer sure would taste good, and you would get so relaxed and would be able to sleep" and then you hear "but if you buy beer your husband will want it, and you know he has a problem with that", and then you decide? This is SO what happens. There are demons and Angels with every person on this earth. Protecting, and tempting, respectively. I think that we, more often, blame ourselves for sin, rather than doing what Christ did and RECOGNIZE that it is SATAN doing the tempting, and that we CAN resist that temptation, sin nature and all, by using God's Word. In that senario I just gave, my combat text is "Do not put an occasion to stumble in your brothers way". And you know what happens? That temptation leaves.

    It's a little like that!

LOL. Not at all. From your post I assumed that you were taking a jab. The way that you asked made me think that you were questioning the possibility of the experiences given. Now that I know what you believe based on the 2 questions I asked, I can say, that you were sincerely confused by the way that I told the story.

    Let me clarify.

I had discernment from DEMONS that were IN ME before I went to the girls home. When I repented THERE they left me. When I received the gift from the Holy Spirit it was then from God, and I could now see the demons for who they were.

Have you ever read that verse that says 'when a spirit is gone out of a man he walks through dry places seeking rest and finding none and when he returns to his 'home' he finds it empty, swept, and garnished, and he goes and brings back demons worse than himself, and goes back into that person, and the state of that person is then worse than before'?

That is precisely what happened to me. When I gave my heart to Jesus for the first time, the demons left, but the problem was, that I didn't ever really commit myself totally to Him at that time. I went out of that home and rebelled again.

When the demons that were in me saw me do this, they went and got some of their friends and came back and when I was raped and basically cursed God, they came back into me, and I was at least ten times worse than before.

It wasn't until nearly 3 years later and a marriage down the tubes, my discharge from the AF for Homosexual admission (a lie to get out so I could leave my abusive, adulterous husband), and at least 10 other relationships, that I FELL ON MY FACE before God and TRULY submitted my heart to Him.

It was at that moment that the demons left me, and the Holy Spirit returned, and GOD was in control instead of me.

I have not since then, allowed myself to grieve Him. I know that it can be done through wilful disobedience. I have done it before.

He is my Fortress against the wicked forces in this world. They attack me from all sides.

They know that I have a Testimony of Jesus Christ, and that my testimony is already responsible for people coming to Christ.

They want to see me fall.

Don't be so fast to discount the devil and the evil spirits. They know their fate. They know what is going to happen to them. They want to take as many of us with them as they possibly can.

    To get back at God.

    This is my life verse(s):

Ephesians 6: 10. Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
    11. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
    12. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
    13. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. (!!!!!)
    14. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
    15. And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
    16. Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
    17. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
    18. Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
    19. And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,
    20. For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

I was telling my dad once how God had given me this gift, and so he gave me some books to read. They were like reading a story through my eyes. If you want a glimpse of what I experiece read This Present Darkness, and Peircing the Darkenss by Frank Peretti. He isn't the best author in the world or anything, and I don't know anything about him or his other work, but that series of books, are seriously like looking out through my eyes.

I hope that helped to clear up your questions!

    God Bless

If anyone would confuse the message of the gospel it would be
a person named Zinger who disobeys the Lord in not "adding
himself to the church," as the early believers did, in confusing
the salvational issue and Christian living issue with tongues and
the baptism of the Holy Spirit. You have brought nothing but
confusion to this thread by your views on these topics. My view
on salvation and Christian living, on the other hand are very clear.

    (Zinger)

Is that your final answer, DK ?

It would be impossible for one who is seeking Christ to ever come
to an understanding of salvation on these boards. From the variety
of beliefs herein; for one to adhere to any avenue of pursuit and
expect to find clarification on matters is doubtful. Besides, I didn't
"bring" confusion to this thread, I started it to share one of my life's
encounters with prayer and worship. I try not to be critical of
testimonies as we christians are not all robots molded into one likeness.

For you to consider that all gifts have ceased leaves room for you
to be limited in your consideration for varying testimonies.

Let the thread move on to issues that Glorious, Oneness, 3AM and
    Me have brought up.

    *Summary
You project a good biblical approach to salvation, DK. Then you
confuse the issue with your take on gifts that have ceased and
tongues that are demonic. And...I've never heard of assemblies
taking the place of the body of Christ or that we are instructed by
Jesus to join a local church.

That advice alone would be cause for separation....
    Like...........What Church ?

I guess I belong to the "Whosoever Will Church".

    Yes, I read them.

They were too long for me to quote and reply to, and I spent over an hour the other night replying and it wouldn't post and I lost the reply.

I see that as a sign.

I have decided to leave you in your ignorance.

I don't forsee this conversation leading to the renewing of your mind.

Therefore it would be unfruitful for this discussion to continue.

You can't change my mind about the Sabbath. NO ONE can.

I can't change yours about tongues. Only God can.

My final (or last) answer was given to you at the bottom of page 20, which you completely ignored. In fact you ignore most of the Scriptural answers that I present to you, and come back with unsubstantiated opinions. Back up your opinions with the Bible for a meaningful discussioon.

I'm glad we're back to short responses. I see your drift on
things and have just never ran into someone with your
scriptural makeup. Never heard of some of the things you
propose. Guess that's what's amazing about the bible though...
it is alive with new information for a lifetime. I just wish it said
the same thing to all people.....thus void the complications.
We all accuse each other of misreading it. I sometimes wonder
if that couldn't be explained in the likeness of a life's mate.

Consider that Joe prayed for a wife and met this wonderful gal,
Kelly, who he later married and lived happily ever after. God's
    answer to prayer.

Then there's Don who did the same thing and met and married
    Sherrie.

Soooooooo, God answered two prayers entirely differently.
Joe could say that he got the perfect wife and Don could say
that HE did. They are both right but yet in different ways.
I like to think that the bible is written the way it is to cause us to
expand our studies and our understanding of the complexity
of God. We are told that we "see through a glass darkly" and
I expect that means that no one understands all there is about
the bible. If that were not so, then we'd all be of one mind
    and understanding.....but we are not.

Now that we've got the insults out of the way, lets go back
to 1 Corinthians and look at our subject verse.
    (The "glass darkly" verse)

1 Corinthians 13:9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
13:10 But when that which is perfect is come, then
that which is in part shall be done away. 13:11 When I was a child,
I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but
when I became a man, I put away childish things.
13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the
    greatest of these [is] charity.

Verse 12....says "For now". Now you're going to tell me that Paul was
speaking to the church at Corinth and to them ONLY....(I expect).

Ok....if he was....and verse 9 said we know in part and prophesy
in part, but when the "perfect" is come then that which is in part
shall be done away. Does that mean done, zilch, nada, nothing,
quit, end ? Or..........like verse 12 says "now I know in part, but
then shall I know even as also I am known'' . I take this to
mean that we will know (as God knows)...for He is the one who
knows me as "I am known".

So the "shall be done away" ended up being increased and
multiplied. Our knowledge will be increased; not ended or
diminished. We are in the diminished state "For now" (verse 13).

I would think that the time of increased knowledge will be after
Jesus comes ("that which is perfect"). I don't know of anyone here/now
who claims to have as much knowledge as God. (know as I am known).

As for Paul...was he speaking only to the Corinthians or
is it a message for us today......... ?

    1. If it was only for Corinth, and the "Perfect" being the
bible as you say, then we are now in the state of knowing
as much as God (as I am known).
Do you really think we're in that dispensation now ?
On the other hand, if these messages were only for the
Corinthians, then the following verse would not apply to us
today either. Do you support that thinking too..? If you do,
then we are expected to have divisions and
areas of disputing mindedness and judgements.

1 Cor 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name
of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing,
and [that] there be no divisions among you; but [that] ye be
perfectly joined together in the same mind and in
    the same judgment.

Thanks for the reminder to use scripture and bring up
again a topic that I might have neglected to answer. So much
    for short responses.

Hang in there DK.....We're just getting started...the thread is young.

It was specifically written to the church at Corinth, but applicable to all the churches of the first century, until the canon of Scripture was complete with the completion of the Book of Revelation.

Yes, when that which is perfect is come, then that which is "in part" will end, completely end, be finished. That which was in part were those gifts mentioned in verse 8: prophecy, tongues, and (revelatory) knowledge. They have ceased; they are finished. The Corinthians knew in part: they had part of the Bible--the Old Testament. The prophesied in part. These revelatory sign gifts were given to give them the truth that we now have in the completed New Testament. It was given to them through supernatural spiritual gifts. When the New Testament was complete (perfected), then those gifts ceased, were done away.

"Then we will know..." When God's Word would be completed, he says, we would be looking in it as in a mirror. We would be able to see ourselves more clearly then ever before. James also uses the figure of the Word of God being likened to a mirror in James 1:22-25.

That which was done away were temporary spiritual gifts, some of which (like tongues) the Corinthians were using in a very carnal way. Eveything that we need to know about God is contained in the completed Word of God. Nothing is diminished.

The word "that" in the phrase "when that which is perfect," CANNOT refer to Jesus Christ. The pronoun "that" in the Greek is in the neuter gender. Christ is masculine, requiring a masculine pronoun. Thus, "that" must refer to something else other than Christ. Given the context, the Word of God, is the only viable option that "that which is perfect could be referring to.
The Old English word "perfect" (as well as the Greek word for perfect) simply means "complete." And that is what we have--the complete word of God. Christ in this context would not make sense. He never waas "incomplete," but the Word of God was without the New Testament. We now have the Complete Word of God, the Perfect Word of God.

No, this could never be true. One could never know as much as God--for then he would be God!! Only God is omniscient. When that which is perfect (complete) is come, then that which is in part (sign gifts) shall be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

These two verses must be taken together. They are in the context of spiritual gifts (especially tongues compared to the Word). Paul is not speaking of a child literally, but uses the word "child" here to refer to an immature Christian--a child in the faith, a young Christian.
When I was a child (a younger Christian), I spake as child (a younger, more immature Christian--speaking in tongues); I understood as a child (perhaps understanding as many immature Christians did, that tongues would make him more spiritual). But when I became a man (a mature Christian), I put away childish things (the immature spiritual gifts--the ones everyone seeks after). Notice in 1Cor.12:28 that tongues is listed last in a list of spiritual gifts, that are listed in order of importance.
Now we see through a glass darkly--again speaking of the Old Testament. It is dark because it is not complete with the New Testament as of yet.
"Now I know in part." Again Paul refers to the Old Testament. He knows in part.
"but then shall I know even as also I am known."
"But then," when the Word of God is complete, I shall know even as I am known. This does not mean that my knowledge will be perfected or anything like that. It means that when I look into the Word of God, the completed Word of God, I will be able to see myself more clearly than I ever have before. The Word of God, being like a mirror, will speak to me more directly then it ever did before. It is alive, powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword. The gospel is now more clearly presented than ever before. Your own sinful self is more clearly seen than ever before.

"There are a good many problems before the American people today, and before me as President, but I expect to find the solution of those problems just in the proportion that I am faithful in the study of the Word of God."
"I ask every man and woman... that from this day on they will realize that part of the destiny of America lies in their daily perusal of this great book."

Good input from your point of view. We know there are
other views and I'm sincerely looking for an answer to this
much the same as I did over the Baptism of the Holy Spirit
issue that I took to God in prayer. Now you've got me
wondering if maybe I shouldn't trust this to God in prayer
(as satan can enter my thoughts and control my mouth at
    that time).

I'd like to consider your viewpoints and would like you to
consider those of other writers. (Not mine...but those
qualified to write commentaries). I might add that it is my
understanding that Catholicism considers the coming of the
Catholic Church in the world as "that which is perfect".

*Honorable mention, Spitfire; and checking to see if you
really read my posts..This is another test..Kris eh? ;)

Anyhow, I've checked a couple commentaries and only have
time for one tonight. Here are excerpts on 1 Cor 13:10:
(Notice the writer is referring the "then" to mean in heaven

    http://www.blueletterbible.org/tmp_dir/c/1046760517-7883.html

    Quote:

There will be no need of tongues, and prophecy, and inspired
knowledge, in a future life, because then the church will be
in a state of perfection, complete both in knowledge and holiness.

The present state is a state of childhood, the future that of
manhood: When I was a child, I spoke as a child (that is, as
    some think, spoke with tongues), I understood as a child;

I thought, or reasoned, elogizomeµn, as a child; but,
when I became a man, I put away childish things. Such is the
    difference between earth and heaven.

And how naturally do men, when reason is ripened and matured,
despise and relinquish their infant thoughts, put them away,
reject them, esteem as nothing! Thus shall we think of
our most valued gifts and acquisitions in this world, when we
    come to heaven.

Your approach is honorable DK, but this one is more in line with
how I interpret . Thanks for responding and helping in my
research. I might have to pray about this yet !!!

    DHK,
This is from another commentary and is supportive of the
    last one I offered.

    http://www.blueletterbible.org/tmp_dir/c/1046762328-5686.html

    Quote:

    v. 8-9 We don't need spiritual gifts when we have our heavenly
    bodies.

    v. 10 Most Greek scholars agree that "that which is perfect"
refers to the coming of Jesus Christ. Some say that this refers
to the full revelation of the Bible, but the context doesn't bear
this out. The gifts of the Spirit are helpful and should be in
operation until Christ returns (Acts 2:16-20).

    v. 12 We're looking through a dark glass, and it's hard to
understand the things of the Spirit. We still need Him to
speak the words of God to our hearts. We'll know each other
in heaven, for we'll know more, not less, than we know now.

Does anyone else have meaningful and reputable input or
disapproval for this information presented ?

    1. (8-10) Love will outlive all the gifts

    Yet another commentary:

    http://www.blueletterbible.org/tmp_dir/c/1046762949-3688.html

    a. The gifts of the Spirit are appropriate for the present time, but
they are not permanent; they are imperfect gifts for an imperfect
    time

    b. Virtually all commentators agree: that which is perfect is the
consummation of the age, either with the return of Christ or
    graduation to the eternal

    i. Considering Paul's other usage of telos (perfect), he
certainly seems to be speaking about the second coming of
    Christ (1 Corinthians 1:8; 15:24; James 5:11; Revelation
    20:5, 7; 21:6; 22:13)

My mild comment about this is ..... I suggest you are fitting speaking in tongues here as a childish thing as it suits your purpose? What other sorts of things might be able to be inserted here as well or instead of tongues?

I know I am probably treading old ground from this thread ... but are you saying speaking in tongues is ok when we are babes in Gods family? yet when we grow into mature christians, this doesn't happen any more?

Sorry if I am like a little dog annoyingly snapping at your heels when you are in the throes of deep serious dialogue with Singer

Wow, this thread has gone in many directions and now back to the "perfect" question.

Just my two cents, The greek doesn't seem to allow Jesus coming back as the proper interpretation of the "perfect" because of the feminine/masculine thing. Also, to say that the "perfect" is the Bible is better but I just think that God would have said that in another way. Like when the complete word of God comes or something. Plus I believe that the non-miraculous gifts still exist and it is hard to believe that if the "perfect" is the Bible because when the perfect comes some things are done away with. No, the best thing I have syudied on this is that the "perfect" is the "Kingdom age", Not when jesus comes but when he establishes his Kingdom and rule, for when he comes back there is still work to be done. There is more detail to this but I won't post it unless someone is interested. For what it is worth the Greek word for perfect also means "complete" or "mature". Remember, to keep on topic, no matter what, "tongues" ended on their own after God's judgement was exercised on Isreal around 70ad. Tongues are independent of the "perfect" coming issue. Tongues were a sign pointing to something and the something came and the sign went away.

    In Love and truth,
    Brian
