I agree with this. I posted a thread on Uniforms on the General Discussion Forum. I never thought to post down here. I just never get past the Baptist only. I haven't considered that there would be other religions on here and probably a lot less judgmental than most Baptist!

I wonder if those folks who "don't feel comfortable" in a church setting, or who say they don't come to church because of "dress codes, etc", if they let that stop them from going to the stores, banks, etc.

No one around here dresses up to go to the bank or stores.

The bank employees in our town are always dressy, but that doesn't "stop" anyone from coming in.

Our interim pastor is a 'biker'. He owns a couple of Harley's. He was asked to be the lead speaker at an evangelism conference for 1100 SBC preachers. He decided, since it was just a nice distance, to go on his motorcycle. He took a bag with his suit and a hair dryer with him. Dr. George said he pulled up in front of the church and there were men in suits as greeters everywhere. They were on him like a cheap suit telling him, 'This is a private function. You'll have to leave.' Dr. George said he milked it for all it was worth and then said 'Well at least you could let me use your restroom'. Well they did and he came out in his suit to find a group waiting to show him to the door. He said 'Well now. I think I'm going to change my whole sermon. I'm your guest speaker.' Dr. George said he gave those high and mighty preachers what for, for not witnessing to him. That's one sermon they won't forget!

Jesus went to the homes of publican's and sinners. When the crowd came to arrest him, Judas had to kiss him so the soldiers would know which one he was because he didn't stand out from the crowd! He looked the same as everyone else.

I wonder how many people never return to churches because of the 'holy people' within.

We see this sort of legalism even in others not just Oness, even some on this board. It's ugly legalism no matter who says it and does it.
One should make sure a dress code does not exceed what scripture says. Not adding men's ideas of what someone else should look like. It is too easy to pass into legalism that way.

wow, walls, I haven't seen you say that before.

The church we are going to be attending when we move has a dress code: Please be clothed!

If someone starts attending regularly and is clothed in such a way as to advertise their sexuality, they would be quietly asked to be dressed more loosely, or lower, or higher, or wherever the questionable part of their dress was concerned. But we have been there several times now and it being winter, many of the women (including those in the worship team) are wearing pants and nice sweaters. No one is mistaking any of them for a man!

Personally, I LIKE to dress up a little for church. I spend so much of the rest of the week in jeans and sweatshirts and the like that dressing up a bit is really pleasant. When we are visiting other churches, I definitely will wear a dress, but one which is not show-offy in any way, in color, length, or cut. That, to me, is simply courtesy.

I look at it in this light. If I were to be invited to the White House to meet the president of this great country, I wouldn’t wear a pair of flip-flops and shorts. I’d dress appropriate for the occasion. The same applies to the House of the Lord; I personally would never wear a pair of flip-flops and shorts to church, unless I’m helping clean.

The church I attend has a bus route and many of the kids come not dressed very well, but it’s not their fault. Of course we’ll never turn anyone away at the door, but if they kept coming not dressed appropriate, I’m sure a deacon would politely let them know that what they’ve been wearing isn’t appropriate.

That's where you lose me. Singer Jessica Simpson was shunned by the CCM community because, well, putting it mildly, she had a small frame and big breasts. A CCM magazine berated a Christian video because she was wearing jeans and a sweater up to the neck. We lost her to the secular market, which accepted her as she was. Sad, too, because she's a good Christian role model.

I have a 16yo daughter who is tall and statuesque, with a nice figure. On Sundays, she typically will wear jeans and a sweater that are modest. If an usher came up to her and told her she was dressing "too sexy", I'd probably punch him in the nose and tell him to get his mind out of the gutter, and his eyes of my daughter.

Modesty is fine, but I think the best term is "reasonable modesty". I wear appropriate conservative gym clothes when I go to my fitness center: mesh workout shorts and a sleeveless tee. Perfectly acceptible for a man at a gym. But if I wore those to the store, I'd look like an ad for "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy". Likewise, a tux to church would be way too out of place in church. Dockers and a button up shirt might be more appropriate.

I am glad your church has such a welcoming attitude. I wish I could say the same for some of the members on the Baptist Board. If you start off on the wrong foot, they never let you live it down. Talk about legalism in reverse.

You know the saying, "Don't touch that Mamma bear's cub!" Well, I suppose that goes for the Poppa bear also. ;)

    Question?

How do some of you feel about a woman wearing pants. I know how I was taught, through the years, but I would be interested in knowing how you all were taught...or if the subject ever came up in your churches?

I realize this may be opening up a "can of worms," but it wouldn't be the first time. [IMG]

There is something wrong with women wearing pants.

I think we should all walk around naked because wasn't the desire to hide our bodies sinful. Besides if we all walk around naked and shave all our hair nobody can accuse us of dressing immodestly. [IMG]

P.S. I'm not being serious

Should modest dress be encouraged yes, should it be required no.

I've never been in a church that discouraged women from wearing pants. I find, many times, pants are more appropriate and modest than dresses. I have NO use for culottes. Their wide legs allow people to view more than they should and are just glorified shorts.

    Just my opinion.

Modesty is the ultimate goal at my synagogue; pants are not even spoken of. No one thinks anything of us wearing pants, and most of the women do. Basically, they want us to wear clothing that is not revealing, tight, intentionally attention-drawing, etc.

At the church I used to attend, I, like you, Mee, was taught that women could not wear pants. When asked why, they had to really knead and reshape Scripture to explain that.

A bad part of little girls being forced to wear skirts is that when we played, it was horribly immodest and embarrassing. Then there are the little girls living in cold climates and having to walk to school. My knees would hurt So Bad -- like they had little sharp icecicles in the knee caps -- and the wind blew up my dress. Riding my bike was, well, interesting, but it was also dangerous. (Ever get your skirt caught in the spokes?) As a teen, I was accused of being loose, because I wore skirts; that was the WORST!

As soon as I left that church, I threw away all my skirts but two, but I never wear these. Good riddance to bad rubbish!

Abiyah, was their reasoning taken from the OT?

How do I feel about women pants? Well, they're not my thing, I prefer men's pants. I'm sure women's pants would look good on women, though.
