    1. What Church Synod issued a Bible commentary which stated that contraception was the same as abortion?

    2. What theologian declared in the 1500's that birth control was the murder of future persons?

    3. What priest in the 1700's declared that taking "preventative measures" was unnatural and would destroy the souls of those who practiced it?

    4. Who declared that birth control was sodomy?

    5. What church group ruled in the 1600's that a church official found guilty of birth control was no longer allowed to hold his position?

    6. What well known theologian said, "We do not believe in what is termed 'birth control'"?

If you think that the above statements were made by Roman Catholics, then your quiz score is "Zero".

    The answers are:
    1. The Synod of Dort; 2. John Calvin; 3. John Wesley; 4. Martin Luther; 5. The Pilgrims; 6 Arthur Pink.

From The Bible and Birth Control by Charles D. Provan (Monongahela, PA: Zimmer Printing, 1989).

I just received 2 copies in the mail today. If anyone is interested in a copy, give me a private message.

As well as yourself, Pastor Larry. You don't escape the fallibility factor either. ;)

What's your point? None of those people claimed to be infallible. Only the Catholic Church makes that claim.

"The rest of the populace is more wicked than even the heathen themselves. For most married people do not desire offspring. Indeed, they turn away from it and consider it better to live without children, because they are poor and do not have the means with which to support a household. But this is especially true of those who are devoted to idleness and laziness and shun the sweat and the toil of marriage. But the purpose of marriage is not to have pleasure and to be idle but to procreate and bring up children, to support a household. This, of course, is a huge burden full of great cares and toils. But you have been created by God to be a husband or a wife and that you may learn to bear these troubles. Those who have no love for children are swine, stocks, and logs unworthy of being called men or women; for they despise the blessing of God, the Creator and Author of marriage." Martin Luther

    What's your point?

My point, Priscilla Ann, is that fallibility is an irrelevant issue since we all fall into that same category.

An infallible book that noone can interprut infallibly. That is an even better point. God gave us his truth. We just can't figure out what it is. He can have men write infallible scripture through the Holy Spirit, but he cannot have anyone interprut it infallibly through the Holy Spirit. That's my point. These men mentioned Protestants look to as Shepherds is my point. "I will give you shepherds after my own heart who will give you KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING". Jer 3:15. Do you suppose these shepherds should be giving out KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING should be able to interprut God's words correctly? That's my point.

What political party tends to favor anti-abortion positions in the US today?

What political party do American Catholics overwhelmingly vote FOR?

    Instructive?

    In Christ,

More instructive is the whishy-washy position that SDA takes on the issue of birth control.

    http://www.adventist.org/beliefs/main_stat44.html

It seems that sin and right or wrong on moral issues is simply a matter of consensus with the SDA rather that an absolute.

Are you trying to imply that the Republican party is anti-abortion? Think again. Start doing some research on some of the Republican candidates (to include some of the Bush family)..they are for choice. Choice is a vote for abortion.

I personally do not vote party. I vote candidate, I don't care who they are aligned with as long as they hold to pro-life (not pro-choice) stances.

You might wanna take the finger outta your eye...SDA doesn't have a very good track record about abortion....shall we talk about this:

The General Conference of SDA's president announced to the press, "that although we walk the fence we lean TOWARD abortions" because of the problems of world overpopulation.

This is an older quote...what does the SDA president say today?

    and what about this:

"The doctor who is the king of abortion and owns more than 20 abortion mills on the west coast is named Edward Allred. He has personally bragged about doing tens of thousands of abortions and his many clinics into the millions. He is the unborn butcher who needs to be written up in history as the Hitler of the innocent unborn. I know about him because he used to be a
Seventh-day Adventist. He graduated from the SDA college in Riverside CA. He has given millions of dollars to his alma matter and even gives FREE abortions to many unwed pregnant students---especially med students at Loma Linda Medical
University." He was recently disfellowshipped from the SDA church................for
    gambling!!!

Why is Bob diverting the direction of the thread? Pretty soon, we'll be debating Sunday worship.

Christians who condone artificial birth control are engaging in objectively grave sin irregardless of whether they themselves are culpable of sin due to their lack of knowledge. This is a situation that must be remedied.

Preventing pregnancy by abstaining from relations or by having a permanent procedure (vasectomy) is NOT sin. There is NO scripture to support your stance!
(I am NOT including birth control pills or IUD type contraceptives in that remark as those cause abortions.)

We've had the quiverfull discussion in the women's forum. A quiver is a 'small' pouch [IMG] that holds only a few arrows and is not indicative of a family having 14 children when Dad can only afford to feed 3.

Which returns us to the point I made to Priscilla Ann: fallibility is an irrelevant factor. Pointing out the fact of one's fallibility has no bearing upon the dialogue, for all members partake in this same disease.

If contraception is a sin, then is it a sin for a fully funtional person to not get married and have children? The net result is the same. [IMG]

Carson, the problem here is that our non-catholic brothers adhere to a continually changing interpretation of the unchanging Word.

That others, even the predecessors of their own particular denomination, historically held a belief that contraception is sinful means little if anything.

It comes down to personally interpretting the Bible, while denying that personal desires, and personal convenience, and temptation towards sin have any influence on that interpretation.

I have heard the arguement concerning how many children can one afford used in support of abortion too.

This arguement of affording children is made by people living in the middle class of the wealthiest nation on earth.

Interestingly enough, when people had less wealth, say 100 years ago, affordablity of children wasn't a deciding factor in the right or wrong of contraception or abortion.

</font>[/QUOTE]You are quite wrong Diane. God tells Adam and Eve to "be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth.....". Now Adam and Eve could fill the earth by themselves so we know this to be a command to all men and women. Of course this command was also mentioned to Noah and Abraham and a couple others and it is to YOU. Now if after the second child Eve said, Adam, I don't like this birth stuff and the second one killed his brother, could you get snipped. Do you suppose God would have said, no problem Adam. Psalm 127 tells us that all children are a blessing. "blessed the man whose quiver is full" and yet people today say only 2 are a blessing. We don't need any more of God's blessings. I have heard it said that children are our opportunity to live the beatitudes. I think this is very true.

    Blessings

Methinks Matt 19 is another good one to look over in this light.

    Matthew 19:10
The disciples *said to Him, "If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry."
But He said to them, "Not all men can accept this statement, but only those to whom it has been given.

Celibacy for some is a gift from God and is for the greater glory of the kingdom.

    Blessings
