Speeding...

Well, Kelly! You have a heavy right foot, but
most of us do! That is why I use my speed
control, but if I did not have it, I could possi-
bly be in trouble. Our God did not make me
perfect! 8o( I was a stickler for the traffic
lasw before, but I am more so now, since I
was rear-ended by people who felt that they
were safe drivers. Obviously, am very ada-
ment about people's driving now--perhaps
obnoxious, even. Thank you for not saying
so, though.

Speed limits in Oz? What's the speed limit on the Yellow Brick Road? I guess even Ozma doesn't know how to set speed limits. I wonder if the Wicked Witch ever got caught speeding on her Nimbus 3000. Oh wait, she does 186,000 mph. Didn't she say, "To the Emerald City, as fast as lightning?" No one can see her before she arrives. It's a wonder she doesn't get into any accidents.

Getting for real, I know of a road in my area where the speed limit is 25 and there are nothing but boarded up factories and a jail along it, and it stretches from the rairoad track at the edge of the black ghetto to the 65 mph freeway. There's no pedestrians or cross traffic, and I feel like I could do 50.

Has anyone ever read Beat the Cops by Alex Carroll? Carroll states that the average driver drives in the 65-75 mph range regardless of what the posted speed limit is. Furthermore, the 55 mph speed limit on rural freeways in the US during the 80's, and in some states even in the early 90's, was the result of a political scare campaign. Everyone was worried about conserving fuel. Carroll states that the average speeds on highways are not dangerous, and that they are more or less the result of the average driver's intuition of what the safest speed is. Futhermore, he notes that the safest drivers are usually the ones that drive at the average speed. Those who drive at safe and reasonable speeds are the ones who are usually most alert. The slow drivers are actually less safe because they are less alert and because they impede the reasonable flow of traffic.

One situation where I think speeding is offensive is when you're on a freeway that has a lot of short ramps at which traffic has to come to a full stop, such as the Schuykill Expressway in Philadelphia or the Pasadena Freeway in LA. There, I think a 45 or 50 speed limit is quite reasonable. I rarely ever have to use the short ramps. But I wonder how traffic manages them sometimes. They are easy to use when the freeway traffic is slowed down, because other cars tend to yield to entering traffic. But when traffic is doing 50 or more, I wonder why the onramps don't get backed up.

I wonder who I would be on the raods of Oz...I doubt the cowardly lion would drive like I do...The scarecrow perhaps? "I haven't got a brain, only straw..." I considered the way the witch drove her broom, but 1: I don't like her theology, and 2: brooms don't handle too well as the wicked witch of the east couldn't avoid the hit from the house

There are some roads I would like to go a bit quicker than the limit on, there are others I like to go a bit slower than the limit (don't faint pplz ). I'ld like to see the government bring in a licence for those that like to put the foot down a bit...HAHAHA yeah, the government doing something I'ld like, now THATS going to happen

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to accept him whose driving is weak and putter around town with them...Hey, aren't speed limits a tradition of men?

I presume not many people know that L Frank Baum believed in a mixture of liberal theology and Theosophy. Baum believed in reincarnation and attended seances. Some people may think Baum was a Christian because his books seem to have good morals. But he's no C S Lewis. The few times he uses a biblical alusion, it is on the humorous side. But Hermione and Glinda are ok as long as you confine them to the fantasy world.

I don't know what you mean by the wicked witch having a theology. She just plain has a wicked heart.

I wish Rowling would state her beliefs. All I know so far is that she believes in God and attends the Church of Scotland. She has stated in her books that death is the door to the next adventure, and that people who die happy do not become ghosts. Don't interpret that too narrowly. But she could be liberal in her theological outlook.

 

Oh ok, "theology (or lack thereof...)" Maybe words I was looking for was "world view" instead

Australian driving? That is often really scary for me. Not because of the varying speeds, but because of the massive tailgating! Also the fact that the first couple of seconds of a red light is used as a suggestion to stop that is often ignored!

And yeah, the varying speed limits get a little weird. But so are the roundabouts at rush hour...

Still, the absolute worst driving I have ever seen anywhere is in Taiwan.

They don't drive; they aim.

Speeding? Out here in California if you really want to go the speed limit, best stay in the slow lane!

 

I guess that's the price you pay for speeding thru all those construction zones on interstate 85 around Charlotte--LOL

 

I got a speeding ticket in June of '98. I was caught doing 92 on interstate 85 near Auburn, AL. My checkbook then became $100 lighter.
