    Not sure exactly what 7-11 songs are. Thanks for the clarification(?).

    It is seven words sung 11 times! [IMG] [IMG] Some songs are like that...don't you agree?

    "Thank you Jesus, thank you, thank you Jesus" (come on, sing it with me) "Thank you, thank you Jesus".

    And here's a REAL 7-11 (7 different words)
    "God is so good, God is so good, God is so good, He's so good to me"

    And in MY generation (in another dispensation when nobody had any fun) we had such rich and meaningful lyrics like:

    "Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning, burning, burning . .

    or my favorite verse

    "Give me wax on my board, keep me surfing for the Lord . . .

    Thanks... LOL... I never heard "7-11 songs" before... gotta tuck that one away.

    I would agree that too many of today's newest material is that way. "I Could Sing of Your Love Forever" is a prime example of a song that has a good idea, just goes too long. I like to say that the writer ran out of song. The rest is just prolonged so that you get your full 3 or 4 minutes out of it. Not a judgement on the hearts or intentions of the writers... just my humble opinion. [IMG]

    Thanks to all of you that have expressed opinions on this subject of newer hymns. It has definitely been a good discussion. I've learned alot even about different views on what constitutes a hymn. Quite educational. I'm going to like being a member here.

    Joshua! Hi!

    Yes,I could sing of your love forever is one that could be sung to a girlfriend,grandma,or anyone. It is IMO not a biblically based song and would identify itself as a true 7-11 song. :D

    I'm glad to see you are a music pastor and practicing discernment in the area of music...we need more like you!

    Over the mountains and the sea,
    Your river runs with love for me,
    and I will open up my heart
    and let the Healer set me free.
    I'm happy to be in the truth,
    and I will daily lift my hands:
    for I will always sing of when
    Your love came down. [Yeah!]

    I could sing of Your love forever,
    I could sing of Your love forever,
    I could sing of Your love forever,
    I could sing of Your love forever. [Repeat]

    Oh, I feel like dancing -
    it's foolishness I know;
    but, when the world has seen the Light,
    they will dance with joy,
    like we're dancing now.

    ------

    Why would anyone call their earthly lover a "healer" or say that their love is the "Light." And why would people lift their hands for their grandma?

    It is only when we take many of these songs out of context that we make statements as you make.

    I don't mean to be rude... but this topic was initially started to discuss new hymns... not 7-11 songs or the spiritual application of "I Could Sing of Your Love Forever". I'm guessing maybe we should move this discussion to another post? Just my humble opinion. [IMG]

    OK, I give up.

    Could someone please explain to me what "7-11" means, in the context of music? What is "7-11 music"?

    Thanks!

    Ooops, I just saw where its explained!

    Hey, I think some songs are exceedingly good, BECAUSE OF the repetitive nature of the words. Singing the same words over and over is sometimes a wonderful thing, and can sometimes make a song more meaningful than otherwise, if the ones singing words of praise to God really mean them as they sing them.

    We all know the Psalms were originally set to music, so go and check out Psalms 148 and psalm 150.

    Also, check out Revelation 4:8.

    We can see clearly that God LOVES repetitious lyrics to songs, sung over and over again, if the words being repeated over and over are worthy of being repeated!

    I agree with God on this! [IMG]

    (But, I also love the rich and meaningful words to the great hymns, as well!)

    Grace and peace,

    Mike

    Dear Joshua,Dr.Bob,D28Guy,Enda,

    You might want to check out Indelible Grace Music at http://www.igracemusic.com for a new idea regarding new hymns. This is a project of the Reformed University Fellowship(RUF).

    What they are doing is putting new melodies to the lyrics of many of our beloved traditional hymns. And they are also updating some of the original hymn tunes as well.

    They've published a 143 song hymnal entitled:
    "The RUF Hymnal" in hard-copy and on-line. Each hymn has a sound file and the sheet music with it. The sound files are a little spare in instrumentation and are only 1-2 verses long to give you an idea of how the melodies should go and to accomodate the 143 hymns. The same format is followed on the 3 CD's that accompany the hard copy hymnal. The tunes take a little getting used to but are really very nice and support the texts.

    I'm excited over the fact that my music director wants to add them to our music repetoire in the fall. [IMG]

    In Christ,

    Dale

    well, i don't know if this is directly applicable to worship, but just search God's thoughts about repetition of words:

    Matthew 6:7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

    It is clear that the important word is "vain" - look at Psalm 136, I think it is and not how many times, "His love endures forever" appears.

    Dear Scott,
    I just tried the link that I provided and it worked. I had problems accessing the site on Friday,but you should be able to do so now.

    Su Wei,

    In some contexts, I would agree completly with you about the "vain repetitions", but not repetitious lyrics regarding praising or worshipping God. The evidence seems to support the view that God is pleased with it, provided our hearts are right.

    Psalm 148 begins...

    Praise the LORD from the heavens;
    Praise Him in the heights!
    2Praise Him, all His angels;
    Praise Him, all His hosts!
    3Praise Him, sun and moon;
    Praise Him, all you stars of light!
    4Praise Him, you heavens of heavens,
    And you waters above the heavens!

    Psalm 150...

    "1 Praise the LORD!

    Praise God in His sanctuary;
    Praise Him in His mighty firmament!

    2Praise Him for His mighty acts;
    Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!

    3Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
    Praise Him with the lute and harp!
    4Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
    Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
    5Praise Him with loud cymbals;
    Praise Him with clashing cymbals!

    6Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.

    Praise the LORD!

    And Revelation 4:8 really seals it...

    8The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:

    "Holy, holy, holy,
    Lord God Almighty,
    Who was and is and is to come!"

    Again, it appears to me God is pleased with repetitious lyrics, sung over and over, if they are worthy of saying over and over, and the ones saying them mean it. [IMG]

    God bless,

    Mike

    Jesus is talking about a formulated combination of words and filler-- "many words", just to be "seen of men" ("see, we pray!") rather than praying with meaning to communicate with God.

    It's not talking about singing, which even though could be communication with Him like prayer; but since this is not the venue in which God told us to make our requests known (just like you all insist it is not the venue He told us to win souls by [IMG] ), there is not as much of a mandate for the words to be articulating a paragraphical statement.

    There are many old time hymn singers (which are repetitive that the chorus comes after each verse, but is even longer than the P&W choruses, and people sing the same songs over and over) that are guilty of the spirit of this verse if they are just relishing a tradition and not necessarily hearing what they are singing.

    Eric, i can appreciate the point you're making with the singing of old hymns, but what i'm referring to would fit more of Molly's description here.

    But so as not to cloud the topic with this new discussion that has come up, i'm starting a new topic to hear other ideas about this.... [IMG]

    I guess... unless anyone has anything else to say about new hymns, we can all move on. It seems the discussion keeps moving to the praise and worship vs. hymns debate, which is not really what this thread was designed for. But I enjoy the discussion that has ensued. And I look forward to reading what we all have to contribute to this discussion in another thread. Thank you all.
