I note that the American Baptist churches say that it is tricky? They either choose in favour or against, what is tricky about that?

If you risk offending people by the descions you make concerning what you believe are moral standards, have you really won those people in the first place.

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life. Revelation 21:8,27
This so-called church fits in several of the above categories. Even so come Lord Jesus!

Hardly the first. As far as I know, every congregation in the Alliance of Baptists (including ours) is welcoming and affirming.

    How sad.........How very sad. [IMG]

It is so comforting to know that God is still in control and these false prophets WILL fall. They are only here for a season.

I thought that in the context of the church that homosexuality was a sin, and in the context of the church a brother living in open sin is to be dealt with on a biblical basis. (church disciplin)
According to this lady God has had a change of mind about this subject. We should of course express the love of Christ in all things but we are also to take a stand against sin.

I think this tells us a lot about the status of this church.

I hope that Mrs. Williams is going to explain to these people that they are living in sin and point them to Christ to deal with it and not have some feel-good service which is the intention I get from this article. It is possible to take a stand for the truth of God's Word without being judgemental.

No need for the quotation marks "trumpet". Joshua is my real name and I am a bona fide ordained baptist minister with an M.Div. from an ATS-accredited, baptist seminary.

If, by sodomite-friendly you mean that I do not think that homosexuality is a sin; you are correct.

The All New Warm and Fuzzy Feel-Good Church of the Non-judgemental

It might be quite “affirming” to offer a church for kleptomaniacs, instead of being light, they would be light fingered Louies. Might prove interesting when it comes time to “take-up” the collection.

It might be quite “affirming” to offer a church for alcoholics to drink and feel good about themselves, and then they could be the drunkard dunkards. It would offer the Pentecostals a run for their money in being “slain-in-the-spirit”.

It would be quite “affirming” to have the NAMBLA segment of the homosexual community be placed in positions of youth ministry. Whoops I think the RCC kind of has a handle on that one.

It would be quite “affirming” to place all of the liars in charge of the Bible study, that way the scriptures could be taught to scratch the itching ears. Whoops most of the liberal theologians already have quite a handle on that one, with the removal and denial of so much of the truth of the Word.

It would be so “affirming” to offer a sports church, and instead of the old dry uncomfortable sermon, there could be a big screen TV in place of the pulpit, with ESPN, as the focus of worship. Cheerleaders could make a beer run.

It would be quite “affirming” for those who are ever learning and never able to decide, to offer a banquet of theology, with a table of chrystals in the hall, yoga in the Sunday school room, whoops don’t forget to rub the Budda Belly before entering the sanctuary, where today’s worship music will be provided by our new gothic rock youth band, with the latest teachings of Wicca presented for your enjoyment.

It is truly enlightening and absolutely “affirming” to bring the church out of the dark ages and all that out-dated Blood emphasis. It is absolutely ghastly for the self-esteem, to mention the mythos of sin-dogma, and how we have to discard the concept of repentence, for it makes humanity so uncomfortable to be told to go against their natural inclinations. The church must become modern for all enlightened accepted Bible scholars know that the mythical Jesus was the personification of the superior pathway to the Ultimate Unity for everyman.

    Josh,

Do you read the Bible? If so what do you do when you get to passages such as Romans 1?

    Do you skip over it?
What do you tell gays to do in regards to scripture condemning Homosexuality?
Do you just openely disagree with God regarding this?

I had some more thoughts regarding this issue. I believe the Word of God teaches us to break fellowship with a believer who is living in open, unconfessed, unrepented sin. Now if these men or women are indeed believers, maybe that is why they feel unwelcome or out of place in their churches. I believe that God has given us the responsibility of church disciplin in order to lead the believer back into a right relationship with God. I know that if the church I attend broke fellowship with me I would want that fellowship with them and my Lord back!!! Now if we go and create a place for these out of fellowship believers to get together to make them feel good and welcome, I think we are missing the purpose God has laid out for us. Our Lord does not want us to feel warm and fuzzy about sin, He wants us to repent! I feel that a lot of Christians feel that God needs their help in issues that He has already been very clear on. I hate to break it but God does NOT need any of us. It is our pleasure to serve Him in His way based upon His Word. This is all based on these men and women already being Christians. If they are not then of course it is a different problem.

    Drew,

You're certainly preaching to the choir here, but your stereotypes don't stand up in the larger baptist community. Kleptomania, alcoholism, and pedophilia are destructive mental illnesses. There is no reason to affirm them. Lying and duplicity have no place in authentic communities of faith, and the fundamentalist need to confuse responsible biblical interpretation and scholarship with lying continues to amuse me.

As far as your comments on universalism and denying the gospel - they couldn't be further off base. Our church preaches a clear gospel message, and uses worship that is intentionally orthodox and thoughtful.

Your commentary was amusing, but completely ignores the real issue. The oppression of homosexual Christians (like polygamy, slavery, and the treatment of women as property and/or second-class citizens) is an issue that needs more than a casual glance at a few passages in the Scriptures.

    Joshua
