I know in the previous thread which was sensibly closed as it had gotten so long, there was a question raised particularly around britches and where was that in scripture as part of men's garb but not women's. Since my source for that was from a preeminent evangelist and scholar, I didn't have a reply already in my bible study notes. And then, wouldn't you know it? The LORD's Word was being read on the radio on my drive home from VBS and I heard "britches." It was in Exodus and was in a description of men's garb. I know as godly women, we are never exhausted of studying the scripture, so I will go look this up and do a word study. If anyone here is better-versed with that, has already done such word studies and cross-referencing in Scripture, feel free to add onto this thread. In my Precepts classes, we always enjoyed the discussion which surfaced from such a deep and contemplative study of scripture.

    God bless ladies!

Are you equating Daughter with Satan? I certainly hope not because, Katie, she is simply doing what you challenged her to do in the closed topic: give scripture/references, etc. for breeches being a man's garment.

First of all, you complain because she did not answer your inquiries regarding breeches, and now you're complaining when she does make an attempt to study it and post some comments.

Let's make up our minds what we want.

Since Christ did away with the Law, let's only use New Testament to study clothing. Also, my NKJV, which is what I plan to use, has no reference to britches or breeches in O.T. or N.T.

But, to answer your previous remark:

KJV uses breeches several times, is only in reference to priests, but is included with the command that 'they should not wear anything that would cause them to sweat'.

(Ez. 44:18 They shall have linen bonnets upon their heads, and shall have linen breeches upon their loins; they shall not gird themselves with any thing that causeth sweat. )

Ez 44:20 Neither shall they shave their heads, nor suffer their locks to grow long; they shall only poll their heads. 21 Neither shall any priest drink wine, when they enter into the inner court. 22 Neither shall they take for their wives a widow, nor her that is put away: but they shall take maidens of the seed of the house of Israel, or a widow that had a priest before.

Yes the Levitical priest wore the breeches, so that when they climbed the stairs the weren't exposing themselves. Everyone else wore a robe type covering, some pertaining to men only and others to women only.

My pastor always says that it is the men who have taken off there priestly robes and they are the ones running around in improper dress.

    Dear Diane:

Thanks for the references for my study. Because, eep! as I was driving at the time, I couldn't write it down. :D My little brain just registered Exodus ! and the Tabernacle of the LORD. This will certainly assist me in my study.

    God bless!

</font>[/QUOTE]the topic was closed, she has reopened it, continueing the dessention. I have as of yet seen her use scripture. Satan plans in using this topic to devide, I will net watch scripture being taken out of context, and be called evil names becasue of it. What we were called only comes from satan, so maybe you could look and see who used such evil vile names for the women here who wear pants.

Why yes, I have done an exhaustive word study on breeches in the bible. I also posted that you ignored it. so here goes.

So what clothing was it talking baout here. Many name breeches are the evil women's clothing. So lets look at what scripture says about breeches.

    eX. 28:
40“For Aaron’s sons you shall make tunics, and you shall make sashes for them. And you shall make hats for them, for glory and beauty. 41So you shall put them on Aaron your brother and on his sons with him. You shall anoint them, consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister to Me as priests. 42And you shall make for them linen trousers to cover their nakedness; they shall reach from the waist to the thighs. 43They shall be on Aaron and on his sons when they come into the tabernacle of meeting, or when they come near the altar to minister in the holy place, that they do not incur iniquity and die. It shall be a statute forever to him and his descendants after him.

According to this scripture breeches were not common man's clothing, but priests only clothing, men were not allowed to wear this breeches.
And breeches are not mordern pants, they are priest undergarments, they were underware.
All the other verses, from KJV that mention breeches are as follows, you can look these up, they all say breeches were fro Aaron's son only, priests, not men, not women, priests only. If you like I'll copy everyone for you so you don't have to look them up.

    Ex. 39:28, priests undergarment
    Lev. 6:10 priests
    Lev. 16:4 priests
    Ez. 44:18 priests

    Again undergarments for priests only.

    Breeches from Strong's Hebrew dictionary
    H4370 Breeches

From H3647 in the sense of hiding; (only in dual) drawers (from concealing the private parts):—breeches.

    Undergarments/underware

So what does this all mean if breeches were priests clothing? Well if you insist on tieing the two verses together(Deut.22:4 and Ex.28:40) then what it means is women are not to wear priests apparel, how does that apply to us? Women are not to be pastor or priests. Which does go along with the rest of scripture. Using it the way the dresses only people use it it means women can not wear underware. If a woman is not to wear men's clothing, and breeches are men's clothing(even though scripture says they are priests clothing), then woemn were forbidden to wear underware. Now on a previous post of yours you said men wore breeches, and women wore nothing inder their robes. Seems to be saying your are an abomination if you wear underware.
If we take it in context we must ask who was Moses writing to(Herbrews), which clothing is he talking about(he doesn't say,we must assume they would know) breeches were not the modern pants men wear today. And od coures dresses only people always praise the old women who wore long dresses and had everything covered, but fact is they wore the very same priests clothing Moses says not to. Yet they are praise worhty? If breeches were, as scriputre sasy, priests only clothing, they are not the clothing Moses was talking about, unless he did mean women were not to be priests(pastors today), which as I said does go with the rest of scrupture. And all scripture must flow together, or there has been misintrepetation.
By all means you should do plenty of study on this topic, rather then take the word of whoever you quoted in the last topic, becasue they had some pretty unscriptural things to say, you do not want to allign yourself with them. And while your at it, look the hebrew meanings of words,a dn then rad every verse that word(breeches) is in the bible, I have listed every single instance it appears in the KJV. (I like Diane use NKJV, but dresses only ladies are usually KJV olny).
Also like Diane, Jesus has died and shed His blood to fulfill the legal requirements of the O.T. law, He tells us not to become in bondage them again.

Yes Helen I would, but for some they are the samething apparently. For them all christian charcter hangs on your clothing. And I'll not sit and watch scripture used wrongly, taken out of context, and twisted. Nor will I st and be called evil names and be told it is biblical thats God's opinion of me, becaue thats a lie, so they are lying about God and putting words in His mouth, trying to chandge HIm into what they want Him to be.

I was just thinking while I was putting the potatoes on to cook.
No one minds if someone wants to wear dresses only, we aren't saying you can't or shouldn't. But that the scripture being used to support bashing the rest of us is being taken out of context, and wrongfully used. This we disagree with, we also disagree when people come and call us names for wearing pants, which never fails, we are always called names. If a woman chooses to wear dresses only, that fine, it's her business, but if the scripture is being taken out of context,(which we have repeadtly shown), you can not tell other women they need to be doing it. Or put them down for not doing it, which isn't christian in the least. If you don't want to wear the priests underware, then don't do it, cause I don't either. But thats as close to pants as the bible comes.

Katie, thanks for taking the time to think about things and for trying to explain what you mean.

Is anyone still not sure what her point is? She is saying that nothing in scripture requiring women to wear dresses OR NOT wear dresses. A person must answer to his/her own convictions.

Did I get it right, Katie?

    Daughter- [IMG]

I do not want to get anyone angry with me, as I am fairly new, but it seems to me reading all of the posts that the ladies who only wear dresses and skirts are getting most of the hostile attention and not the other way around!I as a matter of conviction do not wear pants and wear only long flowing skirts. I have read all the scriptures that deal with womens garments and " that which pertaineth to a man" and I have prayed fervently about it. Growing up I wore pants or what ever I wanted to, I got saved when I was 15 now I took ALOT of heat at home for making the change to my wardrobe!! I was called all kinds of names, by family at the least, and was told on MANY occasion I just thought I was better than everyone else! Now the whole time I had never tried to force my convictions on anyone else or stood on a stool & preached the 10 evils of wearing britches! [IMG] But just the same people were offended at my decision. Now married to a good man of God I look back to that time 8 years ago, and can see a little of what I think was happening. People were offended at the idea I was dressing the way I was because of Christ, not because of me!! If I had decided I was only going to wear black as a teenager, nail paint and all, They would have laughed it off and said I was going through a "phase". But, because in the name of Christ, people were, and still are offended!!When I think of a womans garment, if I never even opened the Bible, I would automatically say Dresses and skirts. WHY? Because if a man wore them, he would not be accepted in main stream society, so why is a woman in britches? It's easy( to me anyway), Satan does, is, and has broken down the barriers between men and women so well, that walking behind someone at the mall, I have alot of times not been able to tell what gender was in front of me? I once heard a preacher say if its ok for our daughters to wear pants-why can't our sons wear dresses? Just a thought!!! [IMG]

I'm not sure on where I should stand in this thread. I don't want to make anyone mad at me, but just wanted to make some points of my own.
I have to agree with Katie on the long flowing dress. It doesn't quote that in the Bible. Not in mine anyway...lol. I also feel that we shouldn't care on who wears what. Daughter of the Kind doesn't have to answer for Katie wearing pants, & vice versa. In this day in time the women have their own style of pants, pant suits, etc. Now, if we claimed to be saved and tried our best to look manly then I guess that would be different (wearing men's style of pants, shirts, etc).
There was also mentioned about men should not have long hair. Well, in all the pictures that I've ever seen of Jesus......he had long hair!!! So I don't think that it is wrong for a man to have long hair!
Another point on the dressing deal. In our culture our men wear pants, unless he is a cross dresser...lol. In other cultures a man might still wear robes or whatever. So maybe the Bible only means that women should just not wear a mans apparel. Meaning I shouldn't put my husbands clothes on instead of my own. I could be wrong, but that's how I'm perceiving this & if I'm wrong then no one else has to answer for it but me!
& for the lesbians deal. Most lesbians wear their pants baggy & saggy & have t-shirts & caps. They look like a man. A regular woman with pants on or slacks does not look like a man or a lesbian! In my opinion.

I haven't gotten angry about this subject. I have read these posts on appropriate dress but don't believe I have replied yet. I believe the hostility I see is that people are feeling like those that wear dresses only are trying to throw a yoke of bondage and legalism on to those that Christ has set free.

I have never seen an unbeliever get mad because a christian wears a dress. I have seen them get very offended when you tell them about Jesus Christ as the only way to heaven. I think you need to seriously pray about how you present your self to the unbelievers. Please don't take what I say as an offense. I really mean that.

Now here I have a question for you. Being a new Christian maybe you came off as self-righteous to them, and since you stress the wearing of your dress, they may have been right.

Now my dad would scream at me and curse Jesus but it was because I told him the gospel of Christ, (you know Jesus said you will be hated for my name's sake (not hated because you wear a dress).

When I think of a woman's garment I don't automaticall think of a dress. And personally I would not be very accepting of a man wearing a woman's blouse and slacks. I have seen one in our town and it is not a pretty sight. I read my bible a lot and it does not tell women to wear dresses only. It does say not to wear men's clothes.

The only time I was confused was seeing a woman wearing men's clothes trying to look like a man, same with the man dressed as a woman. Aren't sure?, the adams apple alway gives them away. [IMG]

Search the scriptures daily as the Bereans did to see if what even the preacher says is true. Everyone has an opinion, and it isn't always right.

    Helen and Margie,

I was wondering, it seems that every thread on this topic gets shut down. Could it be possible to have a Dress only category, or a anything goes category as long as it is modest. That way those who are being led by the spirit to be one way or the other can gain insight in a non threatening way?

    Just a thought?
