My wife is a Dental Hygienist. She has seen the damage that these tongue studs do to the teeth amd gums (lightning excepted [IMG] ).

She saw two young men with these adornments and spoke to them, letting them see the damage for themselves with a sort of T.V. in the mouth sort of gadget. Both of them decided to remove the devises,

The mother of one of them called in and thanked her. She had been trying for a long time to get him to take it out. She was amazed that after one visit to the dentist he would change his mind.

    Deacon,

Thanks for the insight, I had no idea of dental/oral damage those things do. Please ask her exactly what type damage it does. My 13-year old son hasn't asked for them yet but I think he is intrigued with earrings (I might have him scared to try that, though--I've threatened to come in and give them a tug in the middle of the night every night while they're in, or use them as a handle when I want to get his attention :D ) so it might be good to "nip it in the bud" as Barney Fife used to say, as to the piercings by letting him know what they do.

    Thanks again.

  5. Sounds like a freak accident to me! [IMG] I remember a comment about braces I wore in my early teens, and the bus driver was laughing at my comment about lightning striking my braces in my mouth because it's metal. LOL This reminded me of that day. LOL

  6. I think teenagers who pierce their tounges or whatever are trying to become independant and not to identify with their parents...it's part of growing up! Every generation of teens does this...and I am sure a lot of you did this once! [IMG]

    Nancy,

That's all well and good, and I understand it but I don't have to agree with all signs of rebellion and independence. There are other ways of doing so. Besides, it is not only a sign of independence but also, and perhaps more so, also a means of conforming to the values of their peer group. And if this one that I don't like has adverse health consequences then that is an argument that I can present to my son to persuade him not to do so.

    Oh, more than once [IMG]

As for me, I compromised with my daughter. When she asked about tongue/navel/upper ear piercings. I told her I'd let her get her upper ear pierced, but she'd have to wait until she was 18 for the rest. She got it done, and she now has no desire to get any other piercings.

To date, she's still a 3.8 student, a virgin, a Christian, and drug free.

The Bible warns us against cuttings in our flesh in Leviticus 19:28 which says, "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord."

rather than flat out saying no I do a court of law type of thing.... I have made a rule that I would listen to their reasons to do something... Then I discuss it with them from the Bible. I have asked for a 3 day "recess" in which to pray about the issue. In that manner we have resolved many issues without arguing. My 11 year old (she is the oldest)has actually "won" by using logic and choosing her arguement well. We will see if I need to adjust this approach as teen years are now starting to creep in.

Ear piercing is wrong? It's a cutting in the flesh. Nearly all Christian women have their ears pierced.

I believe this verse speaks of curring and marking in regards to acts of worship.

    1 Corinthians 6:19-20,

"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."

If we are to glorify God in our bodies, how do body piercings glorify Christ?

    Fromtheright posted:
My wife mentioned gum recession particularly because people with these tongue studs frequently develop the habit of knocking the stud around in their mouth.

"It has been reported that piercing the tongue, lip, or cheek could cause gum recession. Not only is this unattractive, but it leaves the tooth’s root more vulnerable to decay and periodontal disease. Some people have experienced gum recession around the area of the oral piercing. The jewelry can rub against the gums and cause them to recede, or pull back from the teeth. This can lead to gum disease and eventual tooth loss." See http://www.drboyd.com/piercings.htm

I'm no advocate of piercing, but I do not think it is done "for the dead" (Leviticus 19:28), rather it is done as a warped sort of adornment.

In some cultures it may be acceptable. In my house we drew the line at facial piercing and strongly discourage anything other than piercing of the ears after my oldest daughter pierced her belly button upon turning 18 [IMG] [my baby]. She has always been one to stretch me. Her actions have taught me alot about the depths of love that God the Father has for me.

So Christian women who have their ears pierced (which is most of them) are embracing paganism??? I would doubt it.
