I don't understand how he "earned" wiggle room. Because he once professed to be a born-again Christian, that give him "wiggle room?"

He hasn't earned any "wiggle room" with me - just a look at his track record contradicts what he professes. :(

I agree, LadyEagle. But many conservative evangelicals are not really voting for Mr. Bush and other Republicans but are really voting against Democrats. They have basically capitulated politically and are content to lose the football game of politics 35-0 instead of 38-0 and are thrilled by the 3 point difference. Therefore, the wiggle room comes about because of that 3 point difference.

KenH---Brother! Give me a Democrat worthy of my vote, and I'll vote for 'um! Trouble is, we haven't had a Democrat in office that was ever worthy of my vote since Eisenhower---and I wasn't born yet!

President Bush making that statement(and being wrong, I may add)---makes him no less born again than me making a wrong statement about the US Constitution makes me un-American! I can just picture President Bush firein' a letter at me stateting---"Blackbird! You're wrong about Article IV, Paragraph One! Sorry, man! You ain't an American anymore!"

You guys need to lay off of Dub about that statement! I've known preachers who make statments concerning Bible facts time to time and later proven wrong---but that don't mean they need to be saved over again, or they lost their salvation or whatever! It just means they're wrong and they need to be corrected! Dub was wrong about that statement--and just needed to be corrected---not saved again! See what I mean?

I hear lots of good Christian singers singing Christian songs that I know are theologically wrong---I think to myself---"That song is wrong!" but yet the artist doesn't need to be resaved---just taken and shown how to have their songs "square up" with scripture!

    See what I mean?

    Your buddy,
    Blackbird

    Hey Blackbird:

Man, if I were running for office, I would feel extremely blessed to have supporters like yourself. You are always willing to give a guy the benefit of a doubt. My feelings about most of our national leaders (president included) are that they are very intelligent and well informed. When these folks say that Islam is peaceful and we all worship the same god, they are lying, because they know better.

God bless you, Sir. I really respect your oppinion even though I don't agree with it.

    Roy

Unless, of course, that guy is a Democrat.

For your information, Blackbird, D. D. Eisenhower was a Republican not a Democrat.

Yeah, I saw the "wiggle room" quote yesterday and thought it was hilarious.

It's bad enough that politicians like Bush are empty when it comes to advancing Godly government. But, no wonder they get away with it when we have "evangelical leaders" making ludicrous statements like that.

Roy is right, Bush and guys like him have a free ride with many Christians to do practically whatever they want...so they do.

Lady Eagle, in response to the implied question in the topic of the thread, here are a few suggestions how he might have earned the "wiggle room". But you'll have to run them by Mr. Land to be sure:

Maybe it was by appointing numerous homosexual activists to high positions in his administration.

Or maybe it was giving them prominence in the last Republican convention, while squelching the pro-life discussions.

Or, could it be teaming up with Ted Kennedy to push through massive federalization of our childrens' education?

Or, perhaps telling (or repeating, take your pick) repeated lies to get us into a horrible bloody quagmire of a war in a country that apparently had nothing to do with any attack on us.

Or could it be his position in opposition to Judge Roy Moore in Alabama?

Like I said, I guess only Mr. Land knows.

Lighten up! There were some Christians on the Baptist Board that were confused by that point. And how many pew-warmers like me know any theology or doctrine to speak of?

Look at the Pope. He is vehement that Allah and God are the same. For New Years 2000, the Pope wanted to hold an ecumencial service in Egypt at the pyramids with Jews, Moslems, and Christians--LOL.

Bush 2.0 is syncretistic--that's all there is to it. What do you want him to get right--the war against terror or theology? Being a third-generation politician, he is going to pop off and shoot his mouth off. Sure we all wish that he would be quiet and cancel his silly Ramadan dinner. At least he is not chasing prostitutes around the oval office.

The whole Bush family suffers from what Bush 1.0 called "the vision thing." Bush 1.0 is an Episcopalian and I think that I have read where he has memorized vast parts of the Holy Bible. But on doctrine, Bush 1.0 is also confused. Asked once about a newly appointed lesbian priestess at the Episcopal National Cathedral in Washington DC, all he could reply was, "I don't think that I am ready for that."

Look at all the people on the Baptist Board who tell others that they are bad Christians if they don't vote a certain way. They seem to get a lot of wiggle room themselves. What kind of theology is that?

Richard Land is not President of the SBC. He is President and Chief Executive Officer of The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. Land is correct that Bush is not a theologian but there is a pattern with Bush on this regarding Islam and from other universalist statements and Ramamdan suppers.

Richard Land and many other Evangelicals I do not believe would be so tolerant of these statements if Bill Clinton had made those statements. That is the hypocrisy of it all. That is because to many in the religious right are married to the Republican Party.

"Jehovah" is not God's name. That name was prepared by people dabbling in magic, combining two words, YHWH, and the vowels from "Adonai.

Yes, I've pointed that out as well. The point seems to fall on deaf ears. The word "Jehovah" is an artificially contrived word. Thanks for affirming that!

Bill Clinton did not have any theology at all. Dr. Land called for his resignation after the Monica scandal as I recall. Other than that, it is majority rule. Dr. Land is issue oriented, not party oriented.

    See for yourself at www.faithandfamily.com

Frankly, I am very weary of the idea that only people who agree with the critics (we all know who the critics are) are the true Christians and anyone who disagrees with the critics are partisan and bad Christians just playing politics.

There are many people in American churches who know no doctrine and who know no theology. Also, there are many people who post on the Baptist Board who know no doctrine. And even fewer know church history. And many advocate one heterodoxy or another on the Baptist Board and will then become fighting angry if one points out that their doctrines are heterodox.

Lady Eagle, Bush is not making the religious statement that you think that he is. He is making mostly a poorly worded political statement to calm the Islamic common man that this is not a religious war of Christian against Moslem because Bush is only after the terrorist Islamofascists.

So count your blessings and have a Happy Thanksgiving 2003!

    :D

Bob---Blackbird learns somethin' new every day----surprise, surprise, surprise---so my hero was a Republican after all---44 years pass by with Blackbird believein' he was Democrat---well, well, well! The General was democratic in his armed forces leadership---refusing to "take a bow" to Bradley and Patton and allowing Monty and Hodges in on a few decisions that affected the war in Europe!!

    Keep going, Church Mouse Guy!

The old "Bush is justified because he's not as bad a Clinton" trick. Is that what the bible says...we're fine servants as long as there is someone we can find who is worse?

I'm not interested in sorting out "good Christians" and "bad Christians". I'm not so hot myself, sometimes. I'd prefer to examine the issues in light of Scriptural truth, and let the chips fall where thy fall. If you're defending someone's evil deeds ("at least he's better than XYZ" or "at least he's not [gasp] a Democrat"), then it may look like you are placing partisan politics above faith in God.

So...Bush has personally known Jesus Christ for many, many years, and can't tell Him from the moon god of Islam. Well, it's possible, I guess. And this is the guy Christians want to be president?
