What does drinking do for you?

It makes one feel like a fool!! Of course, I wouldn't know since I fall in that catagory that Homebound is in!

In the case of wine, it compliments the taste ot the food I'm eating. With the case of beef, red wine is appropriate. With pork, white or blush wine is most palatable.

I find no positive effects of consuming ales or hard liquor.

 

Amen to Homebound and Blackbird.

 

Proverbs 31:6-7 -- Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

So, what does it do for you? It helps you forget your misery and helps you face death. Or is the Bible lying here?

I've done some reading on that. Believe it or not, small amounts of alcohol in the bloodstream seem to prevent the buildup of arterial plaque. THe amount of alcohol required to make a difference is well below intoxication levels.

I'm not advocating that people take up comsumption of alcohol on a regular basis, but there are positive health results concerning moderate alcohol consumption.

I do not drink. It does nothing for me but to cause someone else to stumble.

NyQuil cherry flavor knocks me out.

 

Wine increases HDL ("good" cholesterol) and decreases LDL ("bad" cholesterol), it also decreases the stickiness of blood platelets, which in turn reduces blood clotting. Wine seems to have beneficial effects on glucose and insulin levels as well.
Also wine, especially red, is packed with powerful antioxidants (tannins, phenols, resveratrol, and quercetin, just to mention a few).

Besides that, it tastes lovely, complements a meal, and is the result of the first miracle by Jesus.

Drinking in moderation (1-2 glasses in a night) does not make you lose control of anything.

 

since the majority of the human body is liquid, Drinking is required so we do not dehydrate. OH! you mean alcohol??? Consuming alcoholic beverages is not labeled a sin in Scripture, but drinking in excess is spoken against.

 

How many people who drink do not drink to excess (in their own opinion)? Other people who see them might think differently.

Was Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, or Budweiser mentioned in the Bible? I think not. Some Christians who say it is not a sin to drink do not just DRINK wine...but hard liquor and beer.

Sorry, I just can't see Jesus with a Budweiser in His hand.

I agree. Budweiser's awful. I would imagine Jesus is much more of a Guinness drinker.

Or, He could just turn Budweiser into wine.

Sue, Drinking in excess is spoken against in the Bible, not drinking in moderation. Even the Bible says "Drink a little wine for thy stomach's sake" Why would the Bible say to drink a little wine for your stomach's sake if God meant the Christian to beleive that drinking is a sin?

The Bible speaks to attitude and excesses. Just like the scripture "The love of money is the root of all evil" You will note that the scripture plainly says that "the love" of money, the attitude of greed and lust are what are being spoken of as the "root of all evil" Many have taken this scripture and perverted it's meaning to mean that money is evil, when greed is. Do you see the difference? Drinking a glass of wine isn't sin unless the person drinking it has a problem with self control and desires to drink in excess. Man likes to say the televison is sin, or money is sin, or a revealing neckline is sin or alcohol, no matter how little consumed, is sin. The Bible does not support any of these views, it takes the human variable and their problems with decernment, lust and self control to make any of them a sin.

If a person gets intoxicated, that is a good sign that they aren't drinking in moderation.


I would like to address something Sherrie said as well. If something does not cause you to sin, but will cause by your action your fellow Christian to stumble, then out of love for them, you should abstain for their sakes. I agree. If I invited a person who was struggling with alcoholism to my house, I wouldn't serve wine with dinner out of consideration for their personal stuggle with self control and decernment.

I cannot stand the pious attitude of everyone telling me having a glass of ale is a sin. Show me where.

 

I could totally see that.

 

It gives me a brain freeze.

It'll make me fat eventually.

Attitude is everything, apparently.
