    Deuteronomy 14:7 (KJV1769):

Nevertheless these ye shall not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the cloven hoof; as the camel, and the hare, and the coney: for they chew the cud, but divide not the hoof; therefore they are unclean unto you.

Eating Thumper is not only a bad witness
to your children, it is expressly forbiden
    in the Old Testament.

Or was God talking about some other critter
    than the poor rabbit?

Deuteronomy 14:7 (New Century Version = NCV)

    but you may not eat
camels, rabbits, or rock badgers. These animals
chew the cud, but they do not have split
hoofs, so thery are unclean for you.

    What about woodchucks?

I lived in Maine for 15 years and people there ate them with relish (and a little BBQ sauce).

hare - (Heb. 'arnebeth) was prohibited as food according to the Mosaic law (Lev. 11:6; Deut. 14:7), "because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof." The habit of this animal is to grind its teeth and move its jaw as if it actually chewed the cud. But, like the cony (q.v.), it is not a ruminant with four stomachs, but a rodent like the squirrel, rat, etc. Moses speaks of it according to appearance. It is interdicted because, though apparently chewing the cud, it did not divide the hoof.
There are two species in Syria, (1) the Lepus Syriacus or Syrian hare, which is like the English hare; and (2) the Lepus Sinaiticus, or hare of the desert. No rabbits are found in Syria.

ur authority's incomplete. Easton's forgot to mention that hares exist in both sexes, not just the "it" or "he."

My dictionary suggests a rabbit is
a mammel resembling a rodent such
    as a hare or rabit.

    A woodchuck (ground hog) is
    a rodent.

    Leviticus 11:6 (nKJV):
the hare, because it chews the
cud but does not have cloven hoves,
    is unclean to you;

    Schofield note for Leviticus 11:6
Heb. ARNEBETH is an unidentified animal,
apparently not equivalent to the English
HARE. The supposed error in the text is due
    entirely to the translators' assumptionm
that the English hare and the ancient ARNEBETH were identical.

Does anybody else find it strange that
Schofield says "rabbit" here is an error?
Schofield is the one who sold the
    pretribulation rapture doctrine to
    the mainstream Christian denominations.
