I read a post recently by someone who was basically demanding that each and everything had to be specifically stated in Scripture. And as long as the Bible did not specifically forbid something - she was going to do it.

Well, it would seem to me that Paul provided an answer for this type of logic in Galatians 5.

"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings . . ." (Gal. 5:20-21).

Where does he address specific sins in this passage? The last three words of verse 21, " . . . and such like!"

If you mean homosexual acts, then yes. If you mean homosexual temptation, then no.

    Yes.

It’s not great, but it is not quite rebellion.

Beer is disgusting… But even though I don’t like it it is not rebellion against God by any means!

It’s not great, but it is not quite rebellion.

    No.

    No.

    No.

    No.

If it’s done with soap, probably yes. If it’s at a clothed beach, then no.

    Probably yes.

Nope. It is a day of rest and sports are a fun way to rest.

    Not at all.

Seems to me that to set up an unbiblical standard and try to use it as a measure of loyalty to God is the sin of idolatry, which is indeed rebellion against God. :(

I always considered bad theology to be rebellion before God. My thanks to Pioneer for mentioning some of them.

    1. Of course.
    2. Of course.
    3. I think that since we are aware of its destructive capabilities and its ability to enslave a person, it is wrong. This is because we KNOW this stuff now. Prior to such knowledge, I don't know how it could be preached against.
    4. I am against alchohol for any reason (I think this is where Pete and I disagree).
    5. The lottery is a method of exploiting the poor. That is why I am against it. It isn't about using money wisely. I mean, how many people have bought KJVO material? That is more foolish, me thinks.
    6. Is it to win money? If it isn't gambling, it is a card game like any other. Don't let your kids play "Go Fish".
    7. Of course.
    8. Actually, I am amazed to see this one. It is a shame for men to have long hair. That is Scripture. The reciprocal is not stated in Scripture. The word translated that describes the woman's hair literally means "neat or in place". So, if her hair is "shorter", it needs to be done in an attractive manner. Btw, Paul's point is that a man's hair needs to be shorter than a woman's.
    9. That is ridiculous. You lack not only Scripture, but reason.
    10. Of course.
    11. Of course.
    12. I read this one no less than 5 times. I thought it was a joke at first. Since when is Sunday the Sabbath? [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
    13. I am thankful that I was home-education from 5th grade through graduation. However, not everyone can afford home-education and must instead teach their children to be strong in the faith. Separation and isolationalism isn't the same thing.

To think that drinking beer is somehow ok
    Agree
To think that playing the lottery is somehow ok
    Agree
To think that playing poker is somehow ok
Disagree (you can play using cheerios!)
To think that long hair on men is somehow ok
    Agree
To think that short hair on women is somehow ok

To think that Sunday sports is somehow ok
Agree (Sunday is the Lord's Day and more people might be in church if most of the sporting events were not televised on Sundays)
To think that public education is somehow ok
Agree (however, some people cannot afford to homeschool and do not have a Christian school available or cannot afford it)

    I second Baptist Believer's stetements.

However, I don't think we should judge a person's faith, mind, or heart based on any litmus test of questions.

Folks, ignore this [snip]. God knows we don't need more LISTS to determine sin by. The Bible is enough.

(Edited to remove unnecessary description of the original post.)

It is rebellion against God to make up extra-biblical standards then judge others as if they were in rebellion against God for not obeying them- Like the Pharisees and Judaizers.

How sad a post. Legalism run amok. I will not even answer it (although Pioneer and I might hold to almost identical standards) as it implies that ONE side is "right" or "biblical".

And I read the Bible and just don't see it on some of those items, friend!

It is just this type of list that proves the point that being a godly Christian has shifted from Biblical absolutes and spiraled downward to a MAN-MADE list of so-called "do's and don'ts".

I lived too much of my life around people who
decided, for our God, what was and what was
not sin. The material of cults. If it is not
condemned by the Bible, then we have no right
to attempt to improve our God's salvation by
    our condemnation.

I confess. [IMG] That picture was taken three years ago. I do not have any more recent pics of myself. But, I have not cut my hair since that pic was taken. Trust me, it is long and VERY curly right now!

I agree with Helen and Dr. Bob. [IMG]

But I will say that my hair is short, but longer than my husband's [IMG] But I really don't think that God cares. ;) I think God is more concerned with our worship, praise, and service to Him.

I really don't see why we have to discuss some of these things over and over again. We know what the Bible says. Oh dear...I'm going to stop now, I don't want to seem rebellious :D

    It is rebellion against God:
To think that smoking cigarettes is somehow ok

No it ain't. I quit smoking years ago, but if I found out I had a terminal illness, I am sure I would smoke again, as it would not have time to affect my dying system. "Somehow" it would be 'ok,' although I'm sure I would still prefer a pipe or cigars.

To think that drinking beer is somehow ok

The only reasons I don't drink beer are because I don't like it and because I prefer to drink beverges of negligent Calories; tea, coffee, sugar free pop.

To think that playing the lottery is somehow ok

If 'predestination' is true-- which I don't know-- then we have all involuntarily played the ultimate lottery.

To think that long hair on men is somehow ok

No question this always comes down to "How long is long?" Do you shave your head daily? That's the only way to be absolutely certain your hair does not qualify as "long."

To think that short hair on women is somehow ok

Comparably to above, the only way to be sure of this is for women to never cut their hair.

To think that women wearing pants is somehow ok

    It is if they fit.

To think that public bathing is somehow ok

In case that is the only way of bathing in a particular setting, which is worse? Bathing in public, or not bathing at all?

To think that Sunday sports is somehow ok

This is the stupidest one in your list. If Sunday sports are not ok, then sports are not ok. The day makes no difference whatsoever.

To think that public education is somehow ok

You may be right. I wouldn't be reading this {...} without it.

Now use scripture(not opinion) to tell how long is too long for a amn, and how short is too short for a woman.

1 Corinthians 11:13-15, "Judge in yourselves; is it comely that a woman pray to God uncovered? Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair , it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair IT IS GLORY TO HER.."

I am unsure why any Christian woman would want to cut off what God calls her glory.
