Is Dr. Phil on T.V a Christian? I have been watching his programs and I have just noticed the he NEVER refers to the Bible. Even when there is CLEAR direction from the Bible on issues. He seems conservitive and 'moral'. But as my husband says "good guys go to Hell too". Does anyone know where Dr. Phil stands spiritually? Just wondering........

His dad after he retired went on to seminary at SMU, Perkins. So there are some Methodist leanings in some of his family.

I have never heard one way or another if he is a Christian. I am assuming that if he does not refer to the Bible or does not speak of the Lord that he is not. But that is just an assumption.
I really like him and his show, I always made sure to catch him on Oprah when he was on there on Tuesdays. But the more I watched him and listened to him, especially about the weight loss issues & books, I thought well all of this is in the Bible, every answer is there why do I need to listen to him or buy his books when I have Jesus and my Bible! So in all honesty I stopped watching him. Not because I don't like him or anything but I just don't need him.
Also if he is a Christian & does not profess it or give God the credit should we watch his show anyway? But he is FUNNY! [IMG]
Love in Christ, Angie

If Dr. Phil is a Christian, he has a lot of converting to do. I have heard him use language that ought not to flow out of the mouth of a Christian. Just my opinion from what I have heard.

Cheers,

Jim

Two things that I know he believes different than the Bible teaches is< He doesn't believe in spanking your child ever, and I heard him say that he belives it's O.K. for a mother to work outside the home if it 'fulfills that empty void in their lives'.

The Bible teaches spanking the child? Where?

(And, before it gets there, I understand "the rod" to be the same as the rod of a shephard, not a whipping device.)

You mean that same "rod" used to whack a disobedient sheep?

I dunno Scott, I am not for whacking children with a long wooden rod. Are you for public caning also?

I'm guessing more of the rod that was used to gently bring the sheep back to the flock.

Whatever spin you want Scott.

Even with your partial definition, it was still a rod used for correction.

I am guessing the shepherd didn't send the sheep off into their own patch of grass and let him think about what he did.

What about breaking the legs?

I dunno Scott, that seems a bit much in correction. You still want to continue this idea of yours? I frankly think it qualifies as abuse. Please repent.

None of us can judge the inner man of Dr. Phil.

We can be "fruit inspectors" and I would put him in the category of a good, moral person. Like Dr. Laura.

Saved? Not for me to say.

I agree, Dr. Bob [IMG]

I don't believe in spanking children, either.

The rod of displine referred to in the OT is not a whipping instrument. Teachers would use a rod as a teaching tool. It would be used to write in the sand, and used as a pointing device. The proverbial rod of disiplne is simply a biblical commend to parents that they must teach chilren the difference between right and wrong.

Hence, Dr Phil's view is not unbiblical.

As far as women working out of the house, the Bille doesn't forbid women from working. If you're referring to being a keeper of the home, that's a bit of a stretch. I don't see Dr Phil's view on this as being biblically contrary either.

i would guess dr phil would be the first to let people know if he is a Christian or not, the question may not of been asked. i have not seen him ever confess Christ.

Proverbs 23:13
Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. 14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

This verse cannot be referring to beating a child with a literal rod because beating a child with a rod can lead to death. Verse 14 says "You will beat him with a rod, And deliver his soul from hell." A parent can not beat a child with a literal rod and save their soul from hell. This verse is not speaking of a literal rod.

Proverbs is a book of poetry, that is, language that relies on simile and metaphor. While some of that is lost in translating from Hebrew to English, it is no less so. Considering that, we need to remember that the rod mentioned in Proverbs is a figurative rod, not a literal one. But a figurative rod that represents discipline. Discipline means to correct and teach. Proverb even defines it as a "rod of discipline". It is not a whipping stick that will save a child from hell; but teaching a child in the truch will.
