Opera?

Hehehe... I never would have thought that about you, Bro. Dr. Bob! I'm an opera fan too, and in my early college career, sang in several classic and modern operas. I had the opportunity to sing in Verdi's La Traviata, Mozart's Don Giovanni, Copland's The Tenderland, and a few more... it was quite an experience!

My favorite opera would have to be Verdi's La Traviata.

My favorite opera choruses would be "The Promise of Living" and "Stomp Your Foot" from Copland's The Tenderland, and my favorite aria is from The Barber of Seville, the famous "Figaro" aria. I had an opportunity to sing that awesome piece on senior recital in college!

Howz about a rock opera? Bohemian Rhapsody, anyone?
(I found that song interesting as a kid, but I certainly do not listen to or condone Queen!)

 

But how is that rock opera? It's a song. Now, if you were talking about Chess, I might concur.

I do like opera. In fact, I studied it in college, both as a vocal performance major and continued my voice lessons as a liberal arts student. I don't know that I have a favorite, though.

 

I've heard some opera and don't care for it, but I don't hate it either. Is Les Miserable an opera? I could take that one or leave it as well. I make no move to be pretentious and admit that I love it, because if I said I liked it, I would be lying. For some reason, I love live performance of music, regardless of style, so I'd probably greatly enjoy live opera. If anyone wants to take me to an opera, please buy two tickets, because my wife would really enjoy going as well.

Cos those questions come up oh so frequently.

Now, if you want to get technical, Les Miserables is operetta because of the dialogue, but not, strictly speaking, a musical, because the story itself is sung, rather than in something like Oklahoma!, in which the story is told mostly through dialogue and the songs, while relevant and entertaining, aren't necessary to the story's telling. Try taking the music out of Les Miserables - there'd be no story left.

I love opera. As to singing it, I never had the chance.

I have sang some excerpts from Handell's Messiah, though. I absolutley loved it. I am currently writing a song set in the opera style.
