I came face to face with a fanatical KJVO person yesterday while browsing through Books-A-Million here in Decatur Alabama. She noticed me thumbing through a ESV Children's Bible and took issue of me not looking at 'God's true and inerrant word, the KJV'. Offended and taken back by her comments, I will ashamedly admit my response was less than Christ-like. I said with a harsh tone, "To each his own." With that, I left.

My question is this: How does one come to the conclusion that only one english translation of God's Word is the authentic word of God? I mean, had I been a little more prepared for that encounter, I could have taken a more ESVO position, if there is one, and I would have been in error.

Good. I tried my best (at 0430) to word it without sounding inflammatory or insulting. The encounter bothered me all day and I wanted other's perspectives on it.

No problem DM. Your inquiry was genuine. Now if everyone else can post with the same demeanour we will be fine.

DeadMan, you just have to understand that each person has his own deeply held opinion about this subject. I decided long ago it was not worth my breath to get into an argument over which translation of the Word was the "only authoritative version". I realize that people are saved by Jesus Christ and which translation they prefer to study afterward is not the essence of their (or my) salvation. In other words - I let their argument go in one ear and out the other. One of my best buddies, and my wife also, only use the KJV (they are "preferred", not "only"). As for me, I am reading them all (slowly), using the NIV this year. As you know they each have their individual strengths and weaknesses, and I don't believe I can argue another person into accepting my view. I also will not allow another person to sway me with their view. Bruce

    I don't understand what:

has to do with Bible translations.

Are you saying that the Holy Spirit will lead each person to which Bible version they should use, be it KJV, NKJV, ESV, NASB, etc?

The choice of translation is a personal one which should be pursued with study and prayer. After that it is up to each individual to make his choice, for which he is accountable only to GOd.

Dead Man:My question is this: How does one come to the conclusion that only one english translation of God's Word is the authentic word of God?

This lady obviously has fallen for a rumor inadvertently started by a SEVENTH DAY ADVENTIST official in 1930, and spread by later authors. This rumor is that the KJV is the ONLY "official" English Bible translation. Problem is, this rumor is untrue, proven untrue by its total lack of Scriptural support. Those who believe this rumor sometimes do do because it's so convenient.

However, if its advocates would take the time to research the points of this rumor for veracity, they soon learn it's simply not true, as they cannot support it w/SCRIPTURE.

    John 16:13!!! </font>
John 16:13 has been around long before 1611, therefore does not apply exclusively to the KJV. What the Spirit was able to do pre 1611, He can do even now, no matter if we use the KJV, or another viable B.V. [IMG]

Every year, when I purchase Bibles for our high school graduates, I come face-to-face with a sales clerk that tries to tell me the KJV is outdated and that I should consider another version. I simply smile and place my order for the KJV Bibles.

The bottom line is, every one has their own opinion. An opinion is nothing more than a personal belief. Now, if these sales clerks would try to persuade me with arguments against the KJV or for modern versions, that would have taken the issue to the next level.

My advise, don't take it personal. Most people wouldn't begin to know how to defend their choice of Bible version.

Any argument against the KJV for use in any nation whose main or official language is English, is wrong. So is any argument for the exclusivity of the KJV or any other one version for use in English.

    </font>
The Holy Spirit led me to the KJV after I learned something between the modern version and the KJV. I agree with Slambo concerning John 16:13.

Well, at least you are getting some answers to your question DeadMan. Two folks here say they take a strong KJV position because the Holy Spirit told them to do so.

Some are raised hearing the KJVO position taught all their lives. So they naturally just become what they have always known. Because Grandpa and Dad used the KJV I will to. (This group mostly applies to the Bible belt, ie SC GA AL NC.)
