Will You Remain a Baptist?

I am a Christian.

Doctrinally I am Reformed Baptist (used to be redundant).

My church is affiliated with the SBC, BGCT and local Association.

I do not forsee a change soon. BUT, I am so very disappointed with the SBC that I rarely even acknowledge it in my mind. I would only be sad if it ceased to exist because I still think that it does good Gospel work in its seminaries and missions.

I pray that God will convict men of selfish pride and that a Spirit of repentence and unity overwhelms all and the political games cease.

But, if I end up going to a church not affiliated with the SBC, it will not be a problem. If God leads me to a church that is unaffiliated and does not have "Baptist" in its name, that is also ok.

If God leads me to change doctrine then I will submit. For ex. the Paedo-Baptism vs Credo-Baptism debate is not a slam dunk. But I would be surprised of major doctrinal change, although I still think that believers baptism is more scriptural.

I've been Baptist for over 50 years (and a member of the same Southern Baptist church for all that time). I consider myself both Southern and Baptist but, with all the recent changes in the SBC, not necessarily Southern Baptist.

I see no other church that lines up with my belives like the Baptist church. As for the Church Building that I attend... as long as the Good Lord has me to be there, I will stay. When I feel lead to another church, I will go. Which ever will be in the will of God. "Where he leads me I will follow".

 

Yes, by God's grace I will remain an IFB..

 

In your profile you claim to be a member of a Baptist church. What do you mean by working with an Evangelical Free church?

I will remail a Baptist, it is basically the only church that I have ever attended. We are currently at a IFB church, but who knows if the Lord will lead us to a SBC or an independent baptist church.

I have to move about every three or four years and a church choice is one of our biggest prayers, when we move. The Lord has always led us to a Baptist church.

 

My dad gave me some advice about 30 years ago: "Find the best church in town and join that one." Typically, when I move to a new community, I will try several churches before locking in on one. Presently, I am part of a huge church, sing in a choir of 450, and I really love it. It is the most exciting time in my Christian life.

As long as my church is independent I have no problem with staying Baptist. The name Baptist for me is not just a name it is a conviction.

A good Baptist church is like a family, showing the love of Christ to all. This is what Jesus said (JN 13:34-35).

to "BaptistBeliever" -- please don't lump all fundamentalists together. There are many fundamental Baptists who are loving examples of true disciples.

 

I started out in a liberal American Baptist Church where my parents took me as a child. At age 17 under the ministry of an IFB church I was saved, which I subsequently joined. Since then I have been a member of various fundamental Baptist churches for 38 years.

I am a Baptist because I hold to key biblical principles which we know as Baptist distinctives. Thus my loyalty is to these biblical principles of truth rather than some denomination or movement.

 

Where have I heard that before? Oh yea...my Pastor says it all the time...you mean he learned it from yours?

As for me...I don't think so. Although the pluses are great...the minuses are quenching my spirit. When I move... hopefully next year, I'm looking for a church that doesn't beat me down so much. I love the people, my Pastor and his family, the Bible and what I've been encouraged to study about it...but the rest of it...it's like a great burden on my shoulders, and there is no joy in the weight of it.

 

I had said earlier in this thread that I was considering leaving my Baptist congregation. I'm currently visiting other churches in the area. Last week, I visited a Reformed church which was quite nice. First time in a while I didn't feel like I was getting yelled at from the pulpit. I dunno where God will lead me, but as long as He leads, I'm open. As for affiliation, I have no plans on changing my SBC affiliation until I'm comfortable at a new home.

I am so weary of the SBC-CBF civil war. This battlefield is littered with the dead and wounded. No winners in this fight at all. Nothing but animosity, name calling, finger pointing and generally mean spirited talk on both sides of the issues. Now they've called in the lawyers. Not exactly a great Christian witness. This single issue has caused me to seriously consider looking elsewhere.
