According to 2 Samuel 21:19, who killed Goliath?

Footnotes tend to cast doubt on the truth of God's Word--so disregard footnotes, please.

The KJV does the same thing. What are the words in italics?

Disregard things in italics please! You see the problem with this logic?

If footnotes cast doubts then the KJV is just as guilty. Take a look at the 1611 KJV.

    2 Samuel 21:19 (KJV)
19 And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

notice that "the brother of" is in italics thus meaning it was PUT into the text for clarity etc...

    Notice the NASB's approach:

    2 Samuel 21:19 (NASB)
19 There was war with the Philistines again at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath(15) the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

    (15) Lahmi, the brother of Goliath

Why must KJVOist bring up this lame example time and time again. Simply reading the verse corrects any KJVO confusion.

(2Sa 21:19 Geneva) And there was yet another battel in Gob with the Philistims, where Elhanah the sonne of Iaare-oregim, a Bethlehemite slewe Goliath the Gittite: the staffe of whose speare was like a weauers beame.

(2Sa 21:19 Bishops) And there was another battaile in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the sonne of Iaere Oregim a Beth lehennite slue Goliath ye Gethite: the staffe of whose speare was as great as a weauers clothbeame.

The fact that David killed Goliath of Gath (the Gittite) is evident from other passages. Goliath could not have been killed twice, seeing how David cut his head off.

And they are not two different Goliath's. The fact that they both have the same size spear and are both the same height show it is speaking of two giants.

Looking at other verses that say Elhanan killed Lahmi, the brother of Goliath, I would say there is a big error in 2 Samuel's account.

    1 Chronicles 20:5 And there was war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver's beam. {Jair: also called, Jaareoregim}

    Hmmmmmm...

2 Samuel 20:22 says: "These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants."

Could this mean Goliath had 4 sons who were killed by David and his servants?

CARM : Who killed Goliath, David or Elhanan?

They reference Gleason Archer's Encyclopedia of Bible Difficulties which has the common interpretation of how the copyist errors may have crept into 2 Sam 21:19 which the KJV translates with italicized words not found in its source texts while other translations indicate with footnotes.

Diggin in da Word correctly points out that 1 Chronicles 20:5 has what is considered to be the correct version.

How does anyone know there weren't two Goliaths? After all, look at the time difference between David's rocking Goliath to sleep, and Elhanan's killing Goliath, Lahmi, Paul Bunyan, or whatever his full name was. Elhanan's vic coulda been known as Goliath The Younger as well as Lahmi. He coulda been born after David whacked his bro, & his dad coulda called(not named) him Goliath in his bro's memory.

I'm sure this thread will just be ignored by many KJVOist.

I would like to know why a marginal note is bad but to insert the same "note" in the text is good as long as it's the KJV that does it.

The KJV is clearer than NASB on this verse because JW bible agrees with NASB against the KJV on this verse.

Why do you not give an honest reply instead of playing word games? [IMG]

What does that have to do with anything. It's possible the NWT got some passages right. Why will you or A-A not just answer the question? [IMG]

    Sons of Goliath:

Ishbibenob - spear weighed 300 shekels of brass 2 Samuel 21:16 - killed by Abishai

Saph - 2 Samuel 21:18 - killed by Sibbechai the Hushathite

    Lahmi - 2 Samuel 21:19; 1 Chronicles 20:5 - Killed by Elhanan

    Unnamed - 2 Samuel 21:20,21 - Killed by Jonathan

2 Samuel 21:22 These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants."

But wait! The Bible says one of the 4 was a brother of Goliath (2 Samuel 21:20; 1 Chronicles 20:5).

Lahmi is Goliath's son and brother?

Goliath slept with his mother to father a child who was both a son and a brother to Goliath.

Shall we all join together in singing "I'm My Own Granpa"? [IMG]

Interesting concept! I've never heard that before--Goliath must have really been a pagan!

Possibility: Some people in the bible are known by more than one name. Abraham, Solomon... why not David?

Could not have been David. The Bible tells us his servants told him he could not fight any more after getting too weak in the battle. The servants finished the battles.

2 Samuel 21:15-17 Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint. And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David. But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.

In the rest of the battles, the giants are killed by David's servants.

They were afraid he would be killed, so they swore that he would fight no more.

Goliath and Lahmi were two of the sons of a giant, & Goliath may have been a fifth. Remember, they were all from Gath.(A Gittite is simply a resident of Gath) This father may have been named Goliath. After all, is it unusual for a son to be named after his father?
