Where do you come up with this stuff?

 

The MODEL prayer was a sample Jesus gave his disciples and was not for vain repetition and has nothing to do with time of conversion.

I think reading the verses around the 'example prayer' will help you understand what Christ was showing his followers.

 

GEMJR, by the Lord's Prayer, do you mean "Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed by Thy name..." or the Lord's prayer in John chapter 17? And do you mean that you "quoted" the Lord's prayer in order to be converted? Please explain what you mean. Thanks.

Which one - "Our Father which art in heaven" or John 17? And when you say that when you repeated this prayer you were converted to living for Christ, what do you mean? Your terminology is not familiar to me.

 

I never heard of anyone being converted by saying the model prayer?????

This is was taugh at bible study and continue at worship service. </font>[/QUOTE]GEMJR, there is nothing in the Bible which indicates this is a prayer for salvation. This is only a model prayer for Christians, not a prayer that is intended for repeating over and over again (see Matthew 6:7).

Therefore pray in this way: Our Father, who is in Heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we also forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. (Matthew 6:9-13 Modern King James Version)

Let's break this model prayer down and look at its individual components.

Our Father - we are to acknowledge God as our Father. This is something that cannot be done by non-Christians.

Who is in Heaven - here we acknowledge that God has a dwelling place far better than the sin-ridden planet Earth.

Hallowed be Your name - we recognize that God is Holy and to be honored.

Your kingdom come - we look forward in anticipation to the coming of God's kingdom, and we pray for the advancement of the kingdom.

Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven - we pray not for our own selfish wants and desires, but we pray that in all things God's will would be accomplished.

Give us this day our daily bread - not only a request for the food we need daily, but for all manner of sustenance we need such as clothing and shelter.

And forgive us our debts as we also forgive our debtors - we must be forgiven of our debt to God, because there is no way we can ever repay it on our own merits. And since we cannot repay our debt to God we become hypocrites if we do not forgive others of their debts to us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil - God may test us, but He does not tempt us to sin. All temptation to sin is from Satan. If we look to God, He will provide us protection from Satan's wiles.

For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever - we acknowledge the kingdom is God's, we acknowledge his all-encompassing power and glory, and we recognize His eternal state.

Amen - so be it!

The entire sixth chapter of Matthew is given by Jesus as direction for us. The gist of the entire chapter is that we are not to do things for others to notice and that we are not to do things for ous own benefit - but that we are to place our focus on heaven.

Repetition of "The Lord's Prayer" or the "Our Father" will not get us to heaven. We can repeat this prayer 24/7 for the rest of our lives and it will do nothing for us. What we need for salvation is nothing but faith and trust that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that He died for us, taking our place so that we no longer must face the penalty for our sin. If you have that faith, you have the free gift of God's plan of salvation. This free gift cannot be earned through any actions, deeds, words or works. It is only through our faith in Him.

GEMJR, I know nothing of the church or group with which you are affiliated, and I do not seek to condemn. However, I would carefully examine their teachings. If they teach that works or repetition of prayers can save us, it would be better for you to break ties with that group and to seek a church or group which teaches salvation by faith alone. This is Christ's teaching, and to add to that teaching is to reject Jesus Christ.

this prayer was an example for the deciples to learn "HOW" to pray. Keep in mind they didn't have teachers and preachers and the bible to teach them how to pray or worship God. They were the ones who were founding what we belive is the way to worship. and i think you can say this prayer as many times as you want to because it's not the words it's the heart and sincerity and effectiveness of the prayer that counts.
