Is the serpent that deceives Eve actually Satan himself? Or is it one of his demons? Are there any Scripture references?

    What an interesting question.

If we look at Genesis 3:14, God tells the serpant that it shall go upon its belly, shall eat dust all of its days. From this we can gather that maybe the serpant had another form prior to this.

As far as the suggestion tha satan is the serpent, an interesting reference can be found in Rev 12:9 "And the great dragon was cast out, that old SERPENT, called the Devil, and SATAN which decieveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth and his angels were cast out with him.

I believe it is satan himself. The annointed cherub. It says in Ezekiel 28:13 and following that he was in the garden of Eden.

I'd say "Satan" is a role, a title, a position, not a specific person (angelic or otherwise; Jesus applied the title famously to Peter, remember?). And the role in question is that of prosecutor, essentially. Late in the Biblical period this term began to be applied to a particular angel (the whole notion of naming angels, good or bad, is late).

But then, I'm with Bloom on the snake stuff.

Ezekiel 28 is a fascinating chapter, though. Who is this king of Tyrus, and in what sense is he held to have been (an incarnation of?) Satan?

I am not sure what you mean by a "role". However a "specific person" spoke to Eve. She was speaking to somebody. Who was she speaking to.

Doesn't Exekiel 28 speak to the King of Tyre? My NKJ Study Bible has a note that says that The King of Tyre represents Satan and his fall. But how is this connection made?
    In Ezekiel 28:12

Son of man, take up a lamentation for the King of Tyre, and say to him, "Thus says the Lord God:
'YOU were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect beauty...'"

Doesn't the word YOU refer back to the king of Trye? But verses 13-14 seem clear that God is speaking to someone who was in the Garden of Eden and is an annouinted cherub. This can only be an "angelic" being.

The serpent was merely the body that Satan used as he did Judas. Also, what Chet said.

I believe that Satan is a spirit, an evil spirit... I believe that Satan has an unholy trinity….. I believe that Satan entered the serpent and used it as a tool to deceive our foremother Eve....

In Job and Revelation (just a couple of the many) it certainly seems to be referring to a specific individual. Satan means 'accuser,' but throughout Scripture for the most part it seems to refer to one specific individual.

I would say the serpent was Satan himself (could have possessed the serpent or took on its form, but whatever it was I think it was Satan).

Who may be interpreted as, for that time and place (if you believe Genesis 2-3 took place in a time and place, which I don't particularly), serving as Satan "du jour", so to speak, much as Peter did in Mark 8:33.

Interesting. I don't see a lot of basis for identifying Job's Satan with John of Patmos's Satan. What (specifically) leads to your certainty on that?

I reckon it's whatever lives in a sepenthouse. And since John Smyth was known as the "sebaptist", who knows just how topical this question may be?!

(Actually, HCL, I think it was a typo, intended to read "serpent".)

I know this topic is colder than a ice cube, but I've been away a while and I just spotted it.

God punished the serpent in Genesis. This seems to me that God held the serpent himself (herself?) for it's actions - tempting Adam and Eve.

In all of the possession accounts I remember, the person possessed was not punished for what they did during possession. Yet the serpent was.

Isn't it possible that the serpent acted on his own, without outside influence?

When Paul refers to Eve and the serpent later in the New Testiment (sorry, I don't have the reference), he didn't mention anything about the serpent being Satan himself.

The Revelation verse calls Satan a "serpent", but the word was used for others as well throughout the scriptures.

Anyway, sorry for the late post... but this is a issue that is important to me.

Serpent is one of the many names for satan.Lucifer[satan]is a fallen angel of the highest order, the annointed cherub who covers.[Ezekiel 28]He still is and can appear as an angelic man and can transform himself into an angel of light.[2 COR 11:14]I believe Moses is describing a literal event in the garden of Eden using symbolic language. The whole bible is full of symbolic language from cover to cover.Joseph saw the sheaves of wheat bowing down to him in his dream but its literal meaning was about his brothers.

Ezekiel 28 mentions that the text was directed against "the king of Tyre" (verses 2 and 12). Verse 2 also continues to say that this king of Tyre was a man. I don't see any references to Satan or devil in this passage. The name "Lucifer" does not appear in my Bible.

Perhaps you can furher ellaborate on this link between the serpent in Eden and Satan. Or even the concept that Satan was "a fallen angel of the highest order".

I've heard these statements before, but I can't find evidence in scripture that clearly states these things.

    Thanks. . .

</font>[/QUOTE]Hello everybody I am new here.

My responce is to Glory bound on his post that the reference is to a man and not satan. against the king of Tyre and you are correct but if you look at Ezk 28:13 it talks of this same king being in the Garden of eden.

there is only one man (well make that 2 including Eve) in the garden and that was Adam. So this is refering to someone else other than the King of Tyre.

It also mentions he was the Cherub that covers, which from my understanding, a Cherub is an angelic being.

So then although God is speaking to the king of Tyre--the man-- He was also speaking to the spirit That had possesed him. which to the best of my understanding is the devil.

Just as in the case of Peter, when Jesus said get thee behind me satan, He was not only talking to Peter but the spirit that had possesed him. (Now when I mention possesed I dont mean the exorcist type stuff)

Also notice in verse 17 it says I will cast thee to the ground and compare it to Rev 12:9

in my opinion the serpent in genesis and the devil are one and the same, but am open to scriptural correction.

God Bless and I hope I didnt open up here on the wrong foot

Thanks Helen... I read the thread!

I find it interesting that some are very dogmatic regarding Satan and his "history" when scripture is not that clear (at least to me).
