Dr. Bob Griffin had a poll under this forum about music types, but I am interested in knowing how many of your churches use drums in your bands or orchestras along with your hymns and praise music.

I have been in church since I was young, and this is the first church I have been in as a member that has used drums in its services. And then, it hasn't been more than a year.

I like the change. But then, I have been in the praise band helping with percussion, so I know my attitude is great about it.

We are a small church so we don't have a music group. We are not against drums in the church though. ~Sheila~

We on occasion use the drums. They drummer is also a cop, so he can't come every Sunday, then of course not every song is right for drums either.
So I think thats a yes on the poll.

I put yes, because the church I am currently in uses drums,I don't agree with it,esp on every song. I think it sounds hokey, cheesy and non-reverent. But,you probably already knew my stance on this from the music forum. Anyway,I guess occassionally I wouldn't throw a fit about it if it was done tastefully or for a special service or song, but every service, every song....no thanks! It tends to go along with the shallow praise 7-11 songs....seven words eleven times.

The church I used to attend had a orchestra that I was a member in, we played once or twice a month, and it would depend on who was in charge of the music.

The church I attend now does use drums, but it is from a keyboard. I do not see a problem with it, but I also think that it depends on how the song is supposed to be sung.

    In Christ's gracious love,

  8. My church (Gethsemane Baptist Temple, Ober, IN--Yeah!!) does not use drums. I think it is wrong to use drums. Didn't using drums start with pagan worship ceremonies in places like Africa and Asia? Nowhere in the Bible does it talk about using drums to praise the Lord. I found a good website that talks about Christian music and the drums. It is http://www.av1611.org/cqguide.html.

"Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals." Psalm 150:5

Now the question for bible scholars is, are the cymbals mentioned in the bible the same as today ?

I honestly think that some people have place the importance on the wrong part of the song. Its not about how its played or the amount of lyrics, its about if you put praise in it. I could sing a song with all of four words in it but put all of my love for Christ behind it and it would be just as good as a song with a thousand words. Its allways about the worship and nothing else!

    God Bless

Cymbal: A percussion instrument consisting of a concave brass plate that makes a loud clashing tone when hit with a drumstick or when used in pairs.
(from Latin cymbalum, from Greek kumbalon)

A lot of people confuse their idea of reverence with their church tradition.

If you read Psalms 47: 1&2, which is written to the chief musician, or as we call them today, "choir directors," you'll see that praising God is a joyous, exhultant act of adoration. "Come, everyone, and clap your hands for joy! Shout to God with joyful praise! For the LORD Most High is awesome. He is the great King of all the earth."

If you read Nehemiah 8: 6-11, you'll see Ezra telling the people not to cry and weep as they are reading the book of the law . . . but to celebrate and have a feast . . . ""Don't weep on such a day as this! For today is a sacred day before the LORD your God."

If we won't praise Him, the rocks will cry out. Let the drummers praise Him! Let the guitarists praise Him! Shout to God, lift your voices . . . or let the very rocks cry out because we hold back our praise!

You know what I'm getting at.

There are forms of worship that were enjoined upon the Jews under the "carnal commandment" (Heb. 7:16) that are not commandments to the NT Church.

My church band does use drums, I personnally much enjoy them, but maybe that's because I'm a drummer.

First of all, let me say that I have a huge amount of repect for you, Aaron, for standing up for what you believe.

    Now, for the bullocks...

The sacrificial bullocks were rendered useless by the death of our savior..."it is finished..." Any other blood sacrifice would be useless.

However, I don't see how the praise with cymbals should be compared to an altar sacrifice.

I'm not talking about 20 miniute arena style rock drum solos, just that the drum can still be used for the glory of God. I like traditional, conservative music in the church. And we have used tympani drums in our services.

    Mr. Curtis,

Not only blood sacrifices, but the temple, the priesthood and all the accoutrements thereof. We have to go somewhere other than the Psalms to find a Scriptural basis for using musical instruments in Christian worship.

Now concerning drums: cymbals are cymbals and drums are drums. The folks in 900 B.C. knew the difference and so did the KJV translators.

I voted yes because my church uses soundtracks with drums in it.
