14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

We have had SO many of these threads and nothing gets solved. We take sides and debate. [IMG]

I am not sure what your question was Walls.

Yes, the Bible DOES say that.

Yes, nature says the man's hair should stop at the natural hair line (or at least that's what I've been told it means).

Yes, the woman's hair should be longer than the mans'.

The Bible does not say the woman's hair has to be two feet longer or even two inches.

My hair covers my head and it is longer than my husbands (but not by much). I feel like I am obeying God's commandment, in this respect.

Why can't we just take these two verses literally, for what they actually say, and let it go at that?

Why can't we love our brothers and sisters, regardless of their hair length. If they are wrong, it is God's job to tell them, not ours.

I have never once heard Jesus say He would not accept someone or heal them because their hair violated His Word.

Let's stop trying to read something into those scriptures that simply is not there. [IMG]

Sue and Diane, I was not aware that there had been a topic on hair. And besides, there are new people added to the board each day that may or may not have given these verses a thought. I simply posted scripture to make them available for consideration.

Why not let someone new have a chance to say something and let those who have exhausted the issue sit back and let other people take lead to the Holy Spirit rather than take heed to the dominate board members!

Walls, I'm very surprised you've not seen these threads since they've been going on for quite a while and you've been a member for much longer than either Sue or myself!

However, please read the links I provided. You'll see that each of those discussions turned quite ugly and several women are no longer posting because of that. Several thread were archived because of horrible name calling. Many posts had to be edited.

Walls, this topic has been of genuine concern to many people and one must read the Bible and interpret for themselves through the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Many people believe that these scriptures are for today and if they do, then of course, they should practice it. Short hair for the men and long hair for the women.

Many people interpret these scriptures as being for Biblical times and was meant only for the people at that time.

Like many things it is a matter of interpretation and of course has nothing to do with salvation, but if one is led by the Lord to have long hair then that is what they should do.

Somehow I was not blessed with beautiful hair that would grow long so I just keep it as neat as possible, but it is longer than my husband's hair.

I, for one, do not see this as important, but I certainly would not fault or criticize someone who does.

This probably does not answer your questions because I am merely giving my opinions and my interpretations. Many times, it appears to be impossible to follow scripture literally, but we must pray, study, read, and follow the guiding of our dear Lord and Savior.

I appreciate the differences of opinions and interpretations on this Board and it really makes me think and research the scriptures.

It depends on what you believe it means when it says nature.

Yeah, this topic has been discussed several times. For the benefit of the new folks, I'll see if I can sum it up from memory:

If memory serves correctly, the Greek word is kamao, which means wearing tresses of hair in an adorning fashion. It does not mean long hair in general. Hence, it is not a sin for men to have long hair. Considering that the Jewish custom of the time allowed men to not cut their hair, proper understanding of this verse is essential.

    Maybe these will jog your memory. You posted replies on all of these;

You actually started that thread on History of Dress and hair is mentioned there.

Topic: Why Are Fundamentalist Obsessed By Appearance? You posted 4 or so replies on this one too.

    http://www.baptistboard.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=60;t=001437
In July you said this under HeadCovered Blessing:
As I read the posts, I thought it very wonderful that hearts and minds are open to the Lord's leading. I have always believed that the covering is the hair.

But, if you look at Christian woman today there isn't much difference between them and the world as far as appearance, even in some dress only women. The only true seperation I have seen is that of those who wear a covering. It definetly is something to ponder.

Ladies, the last thing I want to do is to offend anyone but as christians we are to reprove and rebuke with all long suffering. If you take a post as a personal judgement, maybe it is but not from us.

If you have no problem wearing pants that's fine. But I charge you that if it is okay for your to wear pants, then I say to you put your husbands and sons in dresses. If you say well that's not right, that's absolutely right. If it is not right for the male gender to wear dresses then it is not right for the female gender to wear pants.

In 1Cor11 it talks about men and women's hair, then it says in vs14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? I would think this applies to dress as well.

While wearing pants may not be outright said it is sin, it is abomination. After all that has been posted to support this, James 4:17 does apply, Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Personal Study Edition notes from New King James Version on the following scriptures which include the OP scriptures and I quote:

    1 Corinthians 11: 13-25

" Judge among yourseves: Use your own understanding. even nature: Paul appealed for them to recognize the proper distinctions between men and women in ways suitable to their own culture. We, too, must recognize these distinctions in ways appropriate for our world."

Ah, yes, the words "judge among yourselves" which are so often omitted when Paul's verses are repeated.

Even Paul just wanted to slap people and say "look folks, just use your common sense and don't spend so much time sweating the small stuff".

In some of our incredibly lengthy threads about hair, head coverings, wearing pants, and women speakers, Paul would most likely look at us disappointingly and ask "Hey people, does it really matter??? "

I agree, Johnv. I have this mental imagine of Paul talking to the church at Corinth and becoming extremely exasperated with the members, especially when he suggested that the chattering women be silent and go home and ask their husbands because Paul couldn't get a word in edgewise. [IMG]

Well, with all the heartbreak in this world today and all the serious problems that a lot of posters are dealing with day in and day out...I am not going to waste my time rehashing things that don't matter.

We need to be holding each other up and exhorting each other, not judging each other because of our hair, clothing, name, or whatever!

We are majoring on the minors people.

Sometimes I can see Jesus shaking His head thinking, "I gave them a Book to live by and all they do is argue about it". [IMG]

With all due respect, Sue, I am
    confused.

I agree, but I am missing something here.

Walls quoted scripture and asked for a discussion. No one has judged anyone. I thought we were having a civil discussion here.

This is correct. Perhaps other threads should be started in this forum to discuss serious problems that you may be aware of so we can support and uplift our fellow sisters in Christ. [IMG]

Sorry Betty, I didn't mean to confuse anyone. I, like Diane, have seen every one of these threads degenerate into an ugly, name-calling, judgemental, and condemnatory bash fest.

You can check the links Diane posted if you want to review some of them. Most of them had to be closed, or at the very least, edited.

I do not intend to allow this thread to go that way. So far, it has not gotten personal or ugly. If it should do so, I will close the thread.

I am not at liberty to disclose someone else's problems. I am sure you are aware that some people have posted their problems and instead of getting support, they got condemnation and a zillion scriptures thrown at them that they already knew.

No one likes to post a problem and be told they are sinning or do not have enough faith or they would not have that problem. You have been on the receiving end of threads like that as well as I have...

Just trying to avert problems before they arise,

Personally, I think that anyone who has grown tired of the subject should simply click back out! There's nothing wrong with skipping this topic.

As for the discussion itself, I merely expect each person to respect the opinion of someone else. I think that you ladies can have a discussion without resorting to uncivil behavior. I have a great deal of faith in all of you.

I also know that not everyone will agree with each other. I do not find that troubling.

Thank you for letting me interrupt. Carry on!

    Good point JohnV.

Matt: 23. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
    24. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

We are to be examples, let the Holy Spirit convict people individually of the finer points of clothes, hair etc. That isn't our job. I am talking about our liberty here not blatant sin.

Common sense goes a long way. While we pick at how long our hair should be, should we wear only dresses can I paint my nails. Is it a sin to shave our legs. After all, God put the hair there.

My point is, while we nit pick each other we neglect to share the gospel of Christ. What a strange diversion. Jesus said my burden is easy, my yoke is light. Why try to put people in bondage again to the letter which kills? The spirit of the law gives life!

    Peace.

    Hi Margie,

I guess I posted at the same time you were doing so. Thanks for the reminder. Not meaning to sound harsh friends. But please consider what is really important. Should we bicker over these things really, when the world needs the Lord while we pick and fight. The world will know Christ is true by our love one for another. Not our fighting over skirt, hair length etc. I still say if we lead them to Christ he will do the work in them. Let us set the example and he will do the transformation. Have faith! He will complete the work he started in us as he said he would. [IMG]

Ah, I have male pattern baldness setting in. Am I losing my glory? My hair is thinning and there are even some bald spots well-covered by bangs now.

I have a REALLY hard time believing that somehow as the Lord is maturing me (Romans 8:28-30 and Phil 1:6) that the length or even condition of my hair is affecting my spiritual condition...

However, I do my best to stay clean, neat, and well-groomed. Does that count?
