Words out of Our Mouth

I have not seen this tract; I would like to know
more.

I have a major hangup about such things and ad-
mit that I pity believers who use such language.

As a very young, much more mouthy woman, I
attempted an experiment. My voice has several
octaves, so I can dip into fairly low levels. One
day, once again, my mother said, as an oath,
"Oh, lord!" I answered her, in my deepest boom-
ing voice, "YES???" She was offended. She felt
like I was mocking our Lord. I responded, "When
you call upon Him, don't you want Him to answer?"

My lame attempt was to get the point across: this
use of "lord,' in my opinion, is wrong. It didn't
work. 8o)

So what about when I say, "Oh, momma!" Am I
less guilty? Or "good grief" or, especially,
"Momma Mia." What is acceptable to all ears
and consciences?

Maybe "Oh, shucks!" In all my own research, this
is the only mild oath with no baggage attached.

What is "Minced Oathes" it sounds like your trying to say "Mixed Oats" but you have a lisp.

I'm having trouble following the meaning of this topic. Are you talking about swearing an oath? Are you talking about being offensive? What are you talking about.

 

Minced oaths:

Minced oath...........Means:
Gee...................Jesus.
Gosh...................God.
Oh My Gosh...........Oh My God.
Jeepers...............Jesus.
Golly.................God.
Golly Gee.............God Jesus.

That's what I was always taught.

Minced oaths are substituting words for using God's Name in Vain.

 

Oh I see...that's funny... I use Gosh, Geepers, gee whiz, all the time, I had no idea that they had hidden meanings...like talking in a secret code huh?

So all this time I've been taking the Lord's name in vain...which I purposely don't do...without knowing it?

I'm tempted to use one of the familiar explitves that I am used to using...but the Bible says something about to he who knoweth it is sin...and now I know...oh great!

Lot's of Christians don't know about minced oaths...new Christians, Christians who were not brought up in Christian homes, or if it's never brought up in sermons or Sunday School, etc. I happen to be a PK, so it was a BIG ISSUE (i.e. bar of soap) when I grew up! LOL!

 

When is someone going to give us the biblical
meanings of swear, curse, oath, etc.? I am being
lazy, hoping someone else will bring them up.

We are all subject to learning things later than
we'd like at times, and our God's grace is suffi-
cient. I think it is a good thing to be aware and
wary of all sin and anything that is a reasonable
facsimile of it, but we live by faith and in His
generous grace.

 

We shouldn't worry too much about whether this or that is classified as swear or curse.

Since this thread I thought about the reasons that I use any oath, minced or not.

I often say, "Dad blame it!" Wouldn't that be the same as saying, "God d*** it?"

Probably.

But even if it isn't, why do I say it, or any other minced oath? I usually say it out of anger over some kind of disappointment.

What do the Scriptures teach us? In everything give thanks... Now, I'm not saying simply substitute "God bless it!" for "God d*** it." That's no improvement. It is still God's name in vain.

But if I were to truly give thanks, I would say nothing at all, and give thanks to God in my private devotions.

Just thinking out loud.

Who decided that Gee means Jesus?

Guess, I need to get the dictionary out!

You know what it is actually in the dictionary, but then gee also means a word of command to a horse meaning turn to the right. If I use gee then, I am going to give a command to a horse.

I know that the tongue can get us into a lot of trouble and now on this board, we have to be careful of the written word.

My mother used to tell me not to use "gosh" I should have listened to her

O heck, what to do...oops, another euphemism

I guess I do need to make a new year's resolution to clean up my language and read my dictionary more.

Thanks, TheOliveBranch, for starting this topic. It will make all of us think twice before we speak/write such words.

It is important that as Christians we set a good example for all and that others can tell we are Christians by our words.

 

We have always had a rule with our children,as well as for us...we do not say anything that could be questionable...like *Oh,my gosh*,etc...if it could even sound like taking God's name in vain,we do not say it.

I'm very careful to not use any slang language,mainly because it can be used wrongly by me and can set an example of laziness of speech.

Examples would be:
Oh,my word....to me this is wrong
Any names of God
Oh,my gosh or even oh my goodness(although this would be the one we have said before)
