    From 1Kings 19...

14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
15 And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:
16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.

In my studies, I see two words translating to "room". One means room, and the other seems to have multiple meaniings, such as under, to be taught by, or even in place of. And when I pulled out the Strong's exaustive concordance, don't you know they missed that "room" . So I can only guess at which meaning was the original, but I'm assusming it tends to lean towards the latter.

    So my question is....

Is Elijah being reprimanded by God ? Elijah seems to be telling God that God needs him, he is the only one left doing the Lord's work. I don't think God removed any gifts from Elijah, since we see him prophetizing in a later chapter. Is God removing Elijah's resposibility, and showing him that God can get his work done without Elijah ?

    Verse 18...
18 Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

Also, it seems Elisha was blessed with more power, as his works outshone Elijah's.

I'll have to spend some time looking into your "room" idea but concerning your thought about Elisha,
    Thats a good observation!

"When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please, let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.”
He said, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.” 2 King's 2:9,10 NAS

Count the miracles of each prophet. See how each miracle parallels the others.

Elijah is not being reprimanded; he’s being encouraged. He is in anguish and depressed. He was not thinking right. “…I’m the only one left and they seek my life…” God corrected his thinking and offered help. It would be encouraging to have others (along side) assist him in performing mighty works for the Lord and to know that things would carry on even if he were taken. Itwould be even more encouraging to know that there were seven thousand others devoted to the true God.

The KJV’s translation, “in thy room” (vs 16) can be somewhat misleading. It’s probably an Old English phrasing that is not used anymore.

The word there [Heb tahat] means “place”; In 1 Kings 9:16 it means, “in place of you” as you mentioned (see NKJV).

    To late to correct myself...
The word there [Heb tahat] means "under" and also less frequently “in place of”.
