Leland, we offer grape juice from the lectern side of the sanctuary for that reason.

    Dr. Bob --

    Thank you for your reply.

We only do Passover once yearly, as you
mentioned, but I am curious about somthing.

You understand our traditions. As you know,
when we get together for a meal, the fruit of the
vine is raised, and the Lord is blessed for His
provision. Then the bread (challah, in this case,
which is leavened) is raised, and the Lord is
blessed for it. Would you consider this to be
communion, since it is done altogether every
    Sabbath?

I had not, but perhaps I do not understand
Christian communion. I had not considered it
communion, because the body and blood of our
Lord is not mentioned at this time. I simply
consider it our before-meal prayer, then, of
course, we do our after-meal-prayers later.

When I attended the Justice Day service at St. Mark's, our local Episcopal cathedral, a couple years ago — a service concelebrated by clergy of Seattle MCC (which uses grape juice; alcohol allergy being endemic in the GLBT communities) and St. Mark's — they had a grape juice station (as well as three or four wine stations) going, but the grape juice wasn't where the bulletin said it would be, so I had to traipse all over the sanctuary and ask directions from three different ushers before I finally got my heretical Welch's).

To return to the initial subject matter of the thread, we have occasionally used white grape juice at Fremont Baptist, though never I think at morning worship. But even at our regular monthly communion we have used all manner of bread, from the little wafers that seem to be the body of a most insipid Christ (sorry; I take it that way) to a variety of freshly baked loaves to be torn apart as they're passed, all the way to Goldfish™ crackers. (I believe John 21:1-15 is every bit as much an Institution passage as any of the others, so I would not be averse to Communion in bread and fish; but then I'm a sushi nut.)

And as far as the Hebrew Wine Blessing goes, it refers not to "fermented grape juice" but to "the fruit of the vine", and is as à propos with Welch's as with Manischewitz (or even a decent wine! ;) )...

Ah, Haruo, the light bulb finally went off. Should've known who you are from the Esperato and hymns posts.

The Wall Street Journal a few years back said a growing number of churches are turning to white wine because they couldn't find cleaners who were able to remove red wine stains from their altar cloths ...

imo, only if that is your intention, made clear by what you say. i guess you could change the brachos or add a quote from the NT regarding the lord's supper before. my family still holds a pesach seder, and this is one of the changes we made in it.

    Timothy --

My main thing in asking was to make sure I was
not lying when I said that we only do it on Pesach.
I never thought of our prayer at that time as
"communion," but merely as a prayer. SInce I do
not know everything about the way things are done
in the churches, I thought perhaps I had lied to say
we did not do it, and wanted to make sure I had
    not.

We ran out of the wafers once, so another deacon and I ran down to the grocery store to grab some matza, but we didn't look close enough at the box...it was garlic matza!

We were horrified, until a number of the congregation came up later and said they enjoyed the matza much better than the styrofoam wafers. They've been using matza ever since - albeit that it was switched to plain matza.

LOL, friend. [IMG] NOW you've given my warped humorous mind something to play with. We have BOXES of garlic matzoh at our house (they actually are more tasty by far and we use it instead of crackers) . . but never thought about slipping them into the communion service at church. Kewl.

Oh yes...lol...especially during revivals. We usually run out of communion wafers, so we just use plain white bread.

Personally, I don't think it matters. In some primative areas of missions' work, missionaries have used koolaid and saltine crackers.

I think anything would go (even water) as long as you know what they mean. God sees the situation when you don't have enough.

:D We use "Welche's too, I know I bought that brand because it was the brand that was already in there. I guess we just replace it with the same one. We all take turn preparing Communion so if you need more we run a buy it.
As far as the proper "bread" well we have used saltines broken up, wafers, and the little Communion crackers from the Book Stores. It does not really make any difference to me what is used, well I mean different types of crackers and such. Pita Bread might be pushing it a little. LOL

In the church I'm a member of we use bread - supermarket stuff, sometimes regular sliced bread, sometimes small loaves pulled apart - and a red grape juice/nonalcoholic wine.

Things readily available, have a connection to the scriptural elements (although not exactly the same) and easy to identify with. Deliberatly not special "holy bread" or "holy wine".

    Regards
    Bob

Welches and the prepared bread tablets here.

Will Campbell the renegade Southern Baptist Preacher who was very active in the Civil Rights Movement in the South once served communion to a group of Klu Klux Clan members in NC using Moon Pies and Vodka.

I could go for cornbread and buttermilk but not Moonpies and Vodka! :D

Hardsheller, do you have a reference for the anecdote? It's worth documenting and reusing.

Don't have the exact page number because I'm not in my church Office right now. I'll try to remember to get the exact reference for you.
