When did Christ die?

WHo cares? He died. Aside from tradition, does it really matter what day it was?

 

Jesus said in Matthew 12:40. For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

If Jesus was not in the grave three days and three night (72 hours) -- then He was and is a liar and cannot be the Son of God and my Savior.

Christ could not have been in the grave three days and three nights if He died on Friday. You also have a difficult time getting the correct time in the grave with a Thursday crucifixion.

 

Here are the events that occurred during “Passion Week.” Don’t forget that the Jewish day begins at sundown and ended on the next sundown. Gen 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. I realize the month would not be named "April" but for better understanding I will list it as such.

·April 10 - Friday sundown — Saturday sundown. Triumphal entry. John 12:1 tells us Jesus came to Bethany six days before the Passover. John 12:12-19 says, “on the next day” Jesus made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

·April 11 — Saturday sundown — Sunday sundown. Temple cleansed. The fig tree cursed.

·April 12 — Sunday sundown — Monday sundown. Parables, questions, Olivet discourse.

·April 13 — Monday sundown — Tuesday sundown. Matt. 26:2, “after two days”; The preparation for the Passover. Mt 26:2 Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.

·April 14 — Tuesday sundown — Wednesday sundown. Upper Room, Gethsemane, the arrest, trial, and the crucifixion. Ex 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

·April 15 — Wednesday sundown — Thursday sundown. Jesus in the tomb, the Passover Sabbath which was a “high day”. John 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

·April 16 — Thursday sundown — Friday sundown. The women brought spices when the Passover was past. Mr 16:1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

·April 17 — Friday sundown — Saturday sundown. The regular weekly Sabbath, everyone rested.

·April 18 — Saturday sundown — Sunday sundown. Christ arose after sunset that evening, and the empty tomb was discovered early Sunday morning.

This, of course, does not matter concerning our salvation, but is important to hold true to the Word of God. It would have been impossible for Jesus to have been crucified on Friday and have been in the "heart" of the earth for three days and three nights as stated in Matt. 12:40.

 

Jesus was crucified on Friday and he rose from the dead on Sunday. Here is why I take that view.

First, the gospel accounts of the burial and resurrection lay it out this way in simple language. You have to come up with some very convoluted theories to read the accounts any other way.

Second, the only biblical statement which leads people to think that Jesus had to be crucified on Wednesday is the Jonah statement that has been cited on this thread. That statement is an idiomatic statement which was not meant in a wooden literal sense and was not understood in a wooden literal sense by the audience who heard it.

If you insist on taking the Jonah statement in a woodenly literal way, then what do you do with Jesus' statement in Luke 13:32; "Go, tell that fox, "Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.""? Taking that in the most literal way means that Jesus continued to cast out demons and cure people for two days while he was dead and in the tomb and then rose on the third day. I doubt anyone on the board is gonna argue for that!

No, the truth is that this statement and the Jonah statement is an idiomatic expression that was not intended as a literal measurement of time and was not taken that way by the people who originally heard it. Remember, good interpretation consists of finding out what the writer meant when he said what he said, not what it means to me when I read it.

Passover lasts several days. The first and last
days of Passover are both Sabbaths.

This week, Tuesday evening until Wednesday
evening was preparation day for the Passover
Sabbath. The Passover seder was on Wednesday
evening. Starting at sundown Wednesday until
sundown Thursday) was a sabbath. Then
sundown Thursday until sundown Friday is a
preparation day for the Sabbath, and, of course,
Sabbath is from Friday at sundown until Saturday
at sundown.

Passover ends on the following Thursday at sun-
down, with Wednesday (sundown to Thursday
sundown) being the preparation day for that
Passover-ending sabbath.

 

Yes, Pastor Bob has it absolutely correct. I came to that conclusion long ago by listening to the Christian Jew Hour on radio. The founder, Charles Halff, spelled it out quite convincingly.
It has been said that the Jews regard any part of a day as being a day; maybe, but that cannot be applied here because of the way Jesus said it three days and three nights can only be taken to mean three days and three nights.
He was buried at sundown Wednesday and came out of the grave Saturday evening.

I know that the topic of this thread is not "Praise Pastor Bob", and I want to say that he does have it right, on all points.

1. It doesn't matter to salvation
2. It is the truth
3. It's important to know the truth, which will set us free.

In this case, free from what?

From church tradition, which for many has become the true object of worship. We rely on church tradition instead of our relationship with God and that violates the 2nd Commandment.

Yes, our relationship with God is more important than our knowledge of what day He died, on which Jewish High Holy Day He was born and other details.

Yet, if God chooses to reveal these truths to us, it is for His glory, not ours.

The word Easter is derived from the Anglos-Saxon estre, a festival held at the vernal equinox in honor of the Teutonic goddess of dawn, Eostre. This is the same Babylonian "Queen of Heaven," whose worship is condemned in the Bible (see Jeremiah Chapters 7 and 44). Because the two celebrations fell at roughly the same time, the name of the pre-Christian festival(The pagan one as mentioned above)was assumed by Christians. For most non-English-speaking Christians, the festival is called by some modification of the root word pasch, rerived from Pesach, the Hebrew word for PASSOVER.


The word Easter is mentioned but once in the Authorized (KJV) Version of Scripture (Acts 12:4). There it is being observed by the pagan King Herod not by any Christian. Until this century, no Baptist, and many protestants would have nothing to do with it. Baptists, and some protestants were persecuted for their refusal to join in its festivities.

I'm with Johnv. I don't care what day he died. All that matters to me is that he died, he rose on the third day, and is coming back again. It doesn't matter what day he died as long as he rose three days and three nights later.
