I have recently come across two studies one claims Saul was saved the other claims he was not. How could Saul have been given the sprit and saved but then his salvation was taken away.

It really depends on what your belifs are with the ghost of Samuel the witch brought up at Endor. The "ghost" said that Samual would be with him, now if it was the dead Samuel that would mean he would be with him in heaven, if it was a demon as some believe it would mena he would go to Hell. Of course some people would say that only means that he would die.

Well, I really am not sure of the answer to your question, but I think that those who think Paul was not saved would say that the Spirit worked differently in the Old Testament.

They might say that the Spirit came upon Saul to empower him to do a certain task--like the prophesying that he does in the passage you mention--but that this was different than the indwelling of the Spirit that is promised by Jesus and which came at Pentecost, and which seals us (or guarantees our inheritance).

Salvation as we know it is mostly a New Testament concept. The OT folks didn't have an understanding of salvation as taught by Jesus. So in other words, we simply don't know enough to be sure.

I believe that a person could not loose their salvation in the OT (However the Holy Spirit was not their mark of Salvation), I do believe that Saul was saved.

I may be wrong on this, I'm still learning.

We are never in a position to decide who is saved and who is not. We can only go by outward appearance and performance.

In verse 1 of 1 Chron 10, we find Samuel appointing Saul, after the custom of the time, to the office of King. No more, no less. There is no question that the Lord has used people in different roles throughout history to do His bidding, even those outside the church. The Holy Spirit functioned throughout time, including in Old Testament times.

Saul performed according to divine rules so long as Samuel was alive. After Samuel's death, Saul went downhill very quickly, and showed his true colours. See verse 22: "Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff..." Saul was taken up with self more than the kingdom. Under Samuel, he did God's bidding, but then proceeded to do his own bidding and chased after David, whom we know was the Lord's annointed. In chapter 12:25...."If ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king." Saul was not exempted from the divine condemnation if he did wickedly. This lends credence to the anointing as being an earthly declaration of his kingship rather than his salvation.

It may be an interesting study, but hardly profitable, in my estimation. The most important part of these studies is the historical sequences and the arrow that does surely point to the Lord's anointed.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Was King Saul saved? A good question! I’ve thought about this question too.
Apparently the Spirit worked differently in Old Testament periods. The Spirit could be given and taken from an individual.
It deeply effected David who cried out in holy fear after his grievous sin with Bathsheba.
We do know that salvation then and salvation now is by faith. But as said above, we will never really know this side of glory.

We'll know when we get to heaven - if King Saul was saved or not.

It is an interesting question - I think the same could be asked of Solomon also - he like Saul - started out as good (godly) kings - but ended up doing many questionable things.

Solomon was indeed saved. It says so in the N.T.

Saul was lost. The Holy Spirit came upon different people for different purposes. It is a mistake to think that it must have resulted in salvation.

Balaam is said to have prophesied. In the N.T., he is an example of a false teacher.

I would vote for Saul's being saved. That is God's prerogative, you know.

Until Pentecost (yes, even with the disciples and with the OT) the Spirit did not "indwell" individuals permanently. Jesus promised that the Spirit WOULD come and abide . . very different than previously.

Jesus promised "He that is with you will be in you".

Saul was chosen and blessed of God. Yes, he had lots of problems, but I don't see a place where he rejected God or did not have faith in Him. Even in suicide we cannot be separated from the love of God . . .

But, of course, this is all conjecture. I'm not even sure about the salvation of some of YOU . . .

Saul was archetype of the apostate Christian. He had God's Holy Spirit, yet because of his repeated disobedience God's Spirit was taken and an evil spirit vexed Saul. He was saved but forfeited his salvation through disobedience.

Brother, I honestly hope you do not believe that. Because if ANYONE can "forfeit" their salvation, I've done it daily. :(

I started this topic as a study on the disobedience of many professing christians today, and Saul was brought into the picture and his salvation but I have come to discover his salvation really makes no difference on the point if he wasn't saved it was because he would not submit totally to God and it made his life that should have been blessed a tragic lost and if he was saved it still shows how tragic his life was because he would not submit to God's word. The part that really got me, however, is God gave him a new heart and he was still disobediant to his word. I think this explains many professing christian today they have and experience and think because of it even with no repentance they are saved .

Brother, I honestly hope you do not believe that. Because if ANYONE can "forfeit" their salvation, I've done it daily. :( </font>[/QUOTE]If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," and again, "The Lord will judge his people." 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Hebrews 10:26-31 NIV

I believe the key is not the sins we commit, confess and repent of in the course of our sojourn here on Earth, but deliberate, continual sin without confession or repentance.

    Thanks for helping me clarify.

By the way, I hope that you didn’t feel I was singling you or anyone else out on the other thread about the youth minister and pornography. I was merely talking about church life in general. I meant no disrespect. My apologies if I offended.

    In the love of Christ,
    Tim
