According to David Cloud's site when Jesus made water into wine it was non-alcoholic wine. Hmmm.

I always thought moderation was the key and that if you couldn't handle it you shouldn't drink it. Last time I took a drink was YEARS ago; I'm the type that can take a sip and put it back in the fridge and forget about it--but my half-sister is in AA.

I don't think playing poker with poker chips (instead of money) is sinful btw. Or solitaire!

I'm just asking on what basis do people think alcohol is a sin? What DID they drink at the Last Supper anyway?

If alchohol is not a sin they should do away with the no-sales-on-Sunday laws. Sunday is no better than any other day--though it's a good idea to set aside a day, doesn't matter which.

Consider the source here. This guy has an axe to grind so he's not exactly unbiased in the matter and he's not exactly a great Bible scholar.

    It's not.

    Drining it to excess is.

    Wine.

No, they should do away with it because it's unconstitutional. When we start passing laws based on what is and what isn't a sin, hello Taliban!

I think David Cloud is wrong on this one. The folks at the marriage feast had aleady imbibed, and commented how the best wine had been saved for last, unlike the way it was usually done. It doesn't make sense to claim that it was grape juice, since folks don't usually sit around at feasts and drink grape juice.

I'd be careful about adding to the bible. The burden of proof is on you, and Brother Cloud, to prove this claim.

I agree with you on this one! It does violate separation of church and state. Not to mention not buying on Sunday won't keep people from getting plastered anyhow.

well if alcohol is a sin because it leads to drunkedness....then talking should be a sin because it leads to gossip and many other sins.

I lost Cloud halfway through his logic as to how Jesus made non-alcoholic wine. [IMG] Isn't wine by definition alcohol?

I also read somewhere else (might have been Cloud's site) that the forbidden fruit was grapes. According to this guy I'm probably sinning every time I give my son grape juice to drink....

I have heard it taught that there are at least 4 things referred to as wine in the Bible: A dehydrated paste that could be reconstituted to make something akin to grape kool-aid, unfermented grape juice, fermented grape juice, and grape juice spiked with narcotics to make it intoxicating. The contention of this teacher was that even the fermented wine was not made in such a way to yield more than 1-2% alcohol. It would be very difficult to drink enough to get drunk.

I personally don't drink alcohol because we have such a large range of other drinks that are every bit as satisfying while having no ability to make me tipsy or to ruin my testimony.

Some people cross gorges on tight ropes, I'll stick to concrete bridges.

Not according to this text: "As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans, which will come unto us: but ye, gather ye wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken. Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the Ammonites, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan; Even all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much." (Jeremiah 40:10-12).

There's no biblical support to his claim. David Cloud often makes unsubstantiated biblical claims.

Alcohol is not a sin. Consumption of it to the point of drunkenness is a sin. Personally, I think Sunday sales laws are absolutely stupid. I can legally rent porn on Sundays, buy tobacco on Sundays, and fornicate on Sundays, but I can't buy a wine cooler? What if I'm a Seventh Day Adventist? What if I'm a Jew? Sunday laws are of no spiritual value to me in these cases.

Welcome to Canada. Our liquor shops are open on Sunday.

Alcohol is amoral in itself. I refuse to drink alcohol for what I have seen over the years, and no other reason. If someone else wants to drink alcohol, that is their business. I shall abstain it use and its presence.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I don't care for the taste of it. ;)

I stopped drinking it when my husband and I were trying to conceive a child. But the amount I've drunk in my entire lifetime would not even get a chipmunk drunk!

To retort: NO, it is NOT a sin.
Consider the first miracle: water into wine. The water was not merely turned into wine, it was the very best wine. I too have read the claim that the wine was in fact grape juice. I have yet to attend a Jewish wedding where "grape juice" has been served, and I have been to several.

That being said, could I interject my opinion here? I was a social drinker for years (from 21 to 33). I was in a fraternity in college, and have babyset many a drunk in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday morning. I have watched firsthand as alcohol has destroyed the lives of the people I know who abused it. Because of this, I have stopped drinking altogether. It really isn't worth it.
The bizarre thing is that I did not get the backlash I thought I would receive. If I am offered wine at a friend's house, I politely decline, reiterating that I am not trying to be offensive or a holy roller. I have simply made a personal decision not to drink. Aside from some good-natured teasing, everyone thus far has respected my position.

I know that Paul said to put away water and drink a little wine for the sake of the stomach. The point to be made is the fact that they were drinking water that would make us sick today. We don't really need to be drinking for medicinal purposes, do we?

If you are a social drinker, ask yourself: is it really worth it? Does the pleasure you receive from drinking offset the potential damage it can and potentially will cause? Every alcoholic I know started out as a social drinker. Do you know anyone who actually decided that they wanted to go on the perpetual bender? Alcoholism is a progressive killer, and if given the chance, it will destroy you. The real damage lies in the fact that it will also destroy those you love the most. Alcohol enslaves the alcoholic as well as the loved ones in their lives.

Sorry for the sermon, I just want to stress the potential for complete and utter destruction.
