Malachi 2:16

    Which of these three translations of Malachi 2:16 do you all prefer? I am leaning toward the ESV translation myself.

    NAS Malachi 2:16 "For I hate divorce," says the LORD, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with wrong," says the LORD of hosts. "So take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.

    NKJ Malachi 2:16 "For the LORD God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one's garment with violence," Says the LORD of hosts. "Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously."

    ESV Malachi 2:16 "For the man who hates and divorces, says the LORD, the God of Israel, covers his garment with violence, says the LORD of hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless."

    [scarsam]As always, we must judge Bible translation
    matters by the KJV. I'll use the
    REAL KJV of 1611 and not any modern
    version (MV) KJVs[/scarsam]

    Malachi II:16 (KJV1611)

    For the LORD the God of Israel
    saith, that ||he hateth +putting away:
    for one couereth violence with
    his garment, saith the LORD of hosts,
    therefore take heed to your spirt, that ye
    deale not treacherously.

    || Or, if hee hate her, put her away
    + Heb. to put away

    Malachi II:16 (KJV1611, alternate)

    For the LORD the God of Israel
    saith, that if hee hate her, put her away:
    for one couereth violence with
    his garment, saith the LORD of hosts,
    therefore take heed to your spirt, that ye
    deale not treacherously.

    So, i see, it is better, if you hate your
    wife, to divorce her than to beat her?

    Hugenberger (Marriage as a Covenant) is one who has put forth a convincing case for the ESV translation. If I am not mistaken, I think some of the older translations also translated it this way. It does a better job with the grammar of the Hebrew and is contextually sound. Douglas Stuart, in McComiskey's 3 volume work on the Minor Prophets also takes this position.
