    Help!!
About two weeks ago, me and a co-worker(a mormon) got into a discussion on what we believe. I was astonished at how confident he was. He has studied(so he says) well into the Mormon religion. I would greatly appreciate information on witnessing to him.

Get in touch with Utah Missions, Inc. in Marlow, Oklahoma. I don't have their number handy and I doubt they have a website (small operation) but they are a continuation of the ministries of John L. Smith, who was a Baptist pastor in Utah for years, and spent a number of years witnessing to Mormons. They publish a monthly paper and carry a wide variety of books which are most helpful in witnessing to Mormons.

I don't agree with mormans of course but I do have to say this in their behalf. I've had both mormans and JW's at my door and only the mormans were willing and open to me praying with them but the Jw's were not. In fact the jw's were very pushy yet they were not open to what I had to say. I figure if you come to my door your on my terf so be prepared to hear my position too. I took the Jw information and before I read thru it I prayed and asked God to keep my heart protected and my mind alert to false doctrine. I had my bible with me and opened up the jw info and it was like BAM things started popping out at me and I was so amazed to see how off they really are. Btw..I tossed the info after that.

I wrote this somewhere else and I'm going to repeat it here in hopes that it will help you.

The Mormons, or as they like to be called, “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” have the Book of Mormon which is subtitled: “Another Testament of Jesus Christ.” Is it really? Let’s see.
In the introduction Joseph Smith is quoted as saying: “I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth…” However, in Mormon 8:12 it reads: “And whoso receiveth this record, and shall not condemn it because of the imperfections which are in it…” Is it the most correct book on earth or not?
Immediately after the introduction is “The Testimony of Three Witnesses.” They write in the last line: “And the honor be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God. Amen.” Mormon doctrine states that there are many Gods, not just one. Mormons don’t believe in monotheism or the trinity. Yet Mormon 7:7 affirms the trinity: “unto the Father, and unto the son and unto the Holy Ghost, which are one God.” In the BoM Alma 11:27-31 states that there is only one God: “And Amulek said: Yea, there is a true and living God. Now Zeezrom said: Is there more than one God? And he answered, No. Now Zeezrom said unto him again: How knowest thou these things? And he said: An angel hath made them known unto me.”
In the “Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith” on p. 299 Joseph Smith is quoted as saying: “There was no Greek of Latin upon the plates from which I, through the grace of God, translated the Book of Mormon.” Yet the words church and Christ, which are Greek, are found throughout the BoM as well as the Greek word Bible which is found in 2 Nephi 29:3.
The Mormons believe that God, every god, was once human and was born just like you and I. But in Moses 1:3 it reads: “I am the Lord God Almighty, and Endless is my name; for I am without beginning of days or end of years…” If “god” was born just like you and I, how can he be without beginning of days?
Mormon doctrine states that “God” is a man and lives on the planet Kolob. Alma 22:9, 10 reads: “Is God that Great Spirit that brought our fathers out of the and of Jerusalem? And Aaron said unto him: Yea, he is that Great Spirit…” Mormon scripture here is saying that God is a spirit.
This should be a good start for those wanting to delve deeper into the errors of Mormonism.
    YBIC,
    Frank.

I've found that the best way to talk to Mormons is to detail the differences between the Mormon Jesus and the Jesus of the Bible.

The biggest problem in talking to Mormons is that they're so convinced that they're just another Christian denomination and they use the same words we do, but with different meanings so the first hurdle you have to overcome is to demonstrate that the Jesus of Mormonism and the Jesus of Christianity are not the same Jesus.

I'd also warn you that your average Mormon has absolutely no clue what Mormonism teaches or what their prophets have declared over the years so be prepared to back up your claims.

A good place to start investigating Mormonism from a Christians point of view, check out http://www.mrm.org

The mormon "elders" sure do know their stuff. They've been trained to twist you around, and they know the Bible far better than the average "Christian." Living where mormons grow in trees (not literally), Northern Arizona, we have quite a few contacts with the Mormons. I just found out the other day that most "elders" don't use their real names when they are out witnessing, not that this is pertinent info.

The best tool a Christian has to combat a mormon is the Bible. The better you know your Bible, the more evident their error will be and the easier it will be to point out their error. Mike had an excellent suggestion.

To me it is the most difficult thing to do. Those people are brainwashed. It is like you cannot break them.

When they come to my house...they alway come in two's. It is hard to talk to them, for if you get one thinking, the other steps in to ruin everything you do.

I always have things on stand by, and ready for when I see them.

I have even tried saying...you come to my church on Sunday and Sunday night, bring as many friends as you like. I am thinking that If they can get away from their enviroment they might let something sink in.

But it is a programing that starts mostly from young children. I just do not know how to reach these guys. It can be very fusterating. Very aggrevating.

I use John 6:51 and John 1:1. I also try to show them in I Peter 3:15 that Jesus is Jehovah. Also, Colossians 2:9 is a good verse to show the diety of Jesus Christ and refute religious cults.

There is a lot more to it than shouting out some verses.

I was very sincere with my dellima over trying to reach them. I have my Bible in hand, as well as tracts, booklets and such. I wish around here there was a class offered to show an effective way to reach mormons, and Jehovah witness people.

    Who is suggesting this, Sherrie?

I do believe, however, Bible knowlege is the only thing you need to to witness to Mormons. That, and a little patience. People who are trained to spot counterfeit bills in banks, etc., do not study the counterfeit, they study the real thing so hard that the counterfeit almost literally jumps out at them, and they can tell a person in an instant what makes that particular bill counterfeit.

As Christians, I think we are too interested in other religions and study them, and neglect that which is the ONLY tool to witness to the cults, the Word of God.

ummmmmmm...not sure what you are refering to.

But I am not asking to study Mormon culture or their history. I am saying a class where someone has had an effective approach to witnessing to Mormons and Jehovah Witness people, that has lead to an conversion!

Anyone can bellow out scripture. But in all things there is seasoning. Even Satan knows scripture. There is a way of doing all things. And there is a way to reach someone who is brainwashed and thick headed.

It is not as easy as saying 2 scriptures from the Bible. I have seen some people turn people away totally with their approach. Actually make things worse not better. You do need to know how to talk to people.

    Hey Sherrie,

    First of all - [IMG]

Let me tell you the quote I was referring to.

That is what I was referring to. You can use scripture and scripture alone without "shouting" or "bellowing," can you not?

I agree with you that when we witness we need to have the proper attitude, probably most importantly an attitude of humbleness.

Living in primarily a Mormon community, I have seen many who have come to Christ through the witness of Christians not using some special technique, but just using scripture to witness. I think your testimony is important as well. I just don't see the need for a particular technique in this case. You think mormons are difficult to witness to? Paul witnessed to the Praetorian Guard, while they were chained to his wrists and to Festus, Herod and Bernice in the king's court.

Do be cautious about these cult members who come to your doors, folks, as we are not even to bid them "Godspeed." We will not invite them into our house because that would be injecting evil right into our living room, our sanctuary, our home. It would probably be best for most born again Christians to turn back Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons without talking with them. Most of the time they are specially trained (read "specially brainwashed), more masterful debaters, and know more scripture than the average true Christian.

I do understand what you are saying, Sherrie, and I appreciate it very much. Witnessing in the wrong way can certainly drive people from Christ.

Sherrie, there is a group called Watchman Fellowship. They go to churches to teach exactly what you are asking. They primarily focus on Mormons, JW's and New Age. They have been to my church several times and are excellent.

You can find out more about them HERE.

CJ, I use the Watchman.org site a LOT! I think their name makes people think they are JW's which is so far from the truth! It's a Baptist group.

    Neat!

Diane, I think the JW group is Watchtower? I know I used to get them confused. That's unfortunate because Watchman Fellowship is an excellent organization, very well grounded in biblical truth. I highly recommend them!
