One of the most common questions I get, is "how do I witness to my Pagan/Wiccan friend or relative?" The answer tends to be a bit more complicated than many people like. Most Christians are looking for a technique that will have their friend or relative in church within a couple weeks. The fact is, it's not that simple.

Many, not all, pagans and witches have been hurt by the church, or by Christians they have met. A lot of Christians, in attempting to witness to them have ended up alienating them to the cause of Christ. Sometimes, these people have left the church after discovering Wicca, or some form of Paganism, and they are well aware of what Christianity teaches.

Most pagans and witches are irritated when Christians attempt to witness to them. While some are aware that Christianity teaches that Christians are to witness to others, they tend to see our evangalism efforts as an attack against them. Many are distrustful, believing that we care less about them as a person, and more about putting a notch in our Bible. They think that to us, they're just another number. As a result, witnessing efforts normally take a large amount of time. At first, the average pagan isn't going to spend as much time listening to what you say as they are going to spend watching what you do. How you live your life as a Christian can make all the difference in how they will respond to what you have to say.

So what can you do to be an effective witness? First, treat every pagan as you would like to be treated. Live your life in accordance with God's Word. Pray, and ask God for His help in living your life in a way that others can see Christ in you. Remember that Christ didn't go around bashing people on the head with the Torah, and you shouldn't take your Bible and pound your pagan friend with it.

Let God lead in your conversations with your friend. If they seem open to a discussion on religion, talk with them about differences in what the two of you believe. Remember that not all pagans believe alike. If they ask you a question you don't know the answer too, be honest, tell them you don't know, but you can do research together and find the answer. They'll respect you more for that. Be able to take a hint...if you notice that they want to get out of the discussion, move onto something else. Let them know of God's love for them, as well as your love for them.

Don't take a holier-than-thou attitude when talking with them. Remember that Jesus was able to sit and talk with your average every-day sinner without making them feel like scum. In fact, Christ attracted sinners through His love for them. Be more like Christ in the way that you love and respect others, without the attitude of a Pharisee.

And remember pagans are what Paul and the rest of the NT church had to deal with when they weren't dealing with Jews. The only difference is we are dealing with pagans that think they know about Christianity and the Church. But the Iron man is correct. The way to wittness is subtler than you would like it to be.

Ironwill I love it! Wonderful post! So true.

I have a friend that likes to refer to herself as a "redneck pagan". She is a wonderful woman. She grew up in what sounds like a dead baptist church from everything she has told me about it. Bible school all that. Very harsh, prejudiced, strange, unbiblical teaching unfortunately. We have had many talks about God and Christianity and about her beliefs.
At first she was scared to ask any questions because she was always told not to, to just accept what they were telling her and they didn't bother explaining. I can't blame her for being so turned off of Christians or Christianity. Thank God that has changed alot though. She has come a long way in the time I've known her. I always treat her with love and respect and she has noticed and really appreciates that. She admires Jesus and respects His teachings alot, so I keep hoping and praying she will be saved soon. I know there is a reason God laid her on my heart. [IMG]

I find nothing in all the posts so far that I would disagree with...oops, I mean, with which I would disagree. (Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put).

We should prepare ourselves to give a witness to the gospel whenever he opportunity presents itself, and certainly we should pray for those whom God lays on our heart.

But I would not worry about running them off with my witness. They're already off. Remember, through the centuries, people have been exposed to some of the greatest, most persuasive preachers and still have rejected their message. Until and unless the Holy Spirit illuminates their mind and convicts their hearts, they'll continue to reject it.

As much as we should pray for God to save people through our witness, we should also pray for God to open their eyes and their understanding.

I Cor 2:14, spiritual things are spiritually discerned.

    I agree Tom Butler.

But too often Ive seen professing pagans turned off by people who just will not sit and talk with them. Answer some of their questions, and things like that. Sometimes the witnesser insists on sticking to their rote presentation without regard for what the person is experiencing, or what they may or may not know already.

They have already run off, this is true. But many do not want to hear the gospel because of the way Christians act when they present the gospel to them. That is my point.

Nope. They do not want to hear the Gospel because they are totally depraved sinners who are at emnity with Christ.

Their only hope is for God to regenerate them, change their hearts, and save them from their own free will.

Joseph is right, of course. But I see bapmom's and IronWill's point.

At the very least, believers should ground themselves in the scripture enough to point lost people to those passages which tell how to come into a right relationship with God.

If God is going to save people through the preaching of the gospel by human beings, we humans ought to be biblically-prepared humans.

And we should not be fearful to witness. Joseph Botwinick's point kicks in here. When the Holy Spirit prepares the way with illumination, conviction, regeneration and drawing, He can make use of even our feeblest efforts to witness.

That is part of it, yes, but you have no idea how many Wiccans and Pagans I run into who would be much more interested in hearing about Christianity if "Christians" hadn't scared them off. If you treat someone with respect and dignity, it is much more likely that they will want to hear the Gospel message. That is a fact.

Bingo. When witnessing to the lost and being kind to them, we should do it for the Lord and not out of a concern of what the lost thinks about me or God. Until they are convicted and regenerated, they are enemies of the Lord.

i believe we should give them the moral law - the mirror - the schoolmaster - and let the holy spirit lead.

Part of my full-time minstry deals with reaching out to Wiccans and part of it is educating Christians on what Wicca is about (along with the New Age) and how to witness to Wiccans. I agree with what IronWill said. I also agree that many Wiccans do not want to hear the truth, but still, we can learn not to be an offense since the cross is already an offense to the lost.

I usually suggest asking questions like these:
    1. Ask: What is your spiritual background?
    2. If they say it's Christian, ask specifically what they mean by that (it may not be Christian, it might be Mormon but they call it Christian).
    3. Ask why they've rejected Christianity
    4. Ask them who they think Jesus is

These and other questions usually open the door for at least presenting the truth in a non-preachy way. If you take time to listen respectfully, they usually will listen to you.

Agreed Marcia. Ask questions, its what Jesus Christ did. don't preach when witnessing. In School i knew many wiccans and pagans and most were upset because of hypocrisy and that they just didn't know and know one could answer their questions.
