Who helped raise you?

My mom stayed at home to be a mom. Dad was a radio announcer for years and then quality control manager for a little company called Applied Electronics. They later merged with another company to become Lawrence Livermore Lab. After the merger, because he refused to move us, he started his own business doing tape duplications for advertisers and such.

Nevertheless, because Mom had four of us in five years, she did have a part-time maid. Tutie was black and totally part of the family. We obeyed her the same way we obeyed our parents. The only babysitter I remember when I was younger was Connie, the teenager who lived on the street in back of ours. She was really sweet. I hope we didn't give her too much trouble!

 

My mom was truly a "stay-at-home" mom to me and my 3 brothers. My dad worked a lot of overtime and mom was a homemaker. She was very good at her job! I have wonderful memories of my childhood. In a way, though, I was raised by every mom in the neighborhood. We couldn't get by with anything!

My mom decided to get a job when I was about 4. We had 3 different babysitters in 9 months, all of whom were unsuitable in some way. So, my mom saw the need for quality childcare, and opened her own daycare in our home. I was 5, and there were always several kids to play with and watch over. After that, I didn't ever really have a babysitter. I sort of became a babysitter. :smilewinkgrin:

Every summer we would go to camp for a week, and also spend a week or two with each of my grandmothers. They were godly women, and I'm grateful for their influence in my life. My mom's mom is still living, and going strong at 94! I miss my other grandparents terribly.

I guess that was the only break my mom ever got! I don't ever remember staying with anyone for my parents to go out to dinner or something.

Oh, and I agree with booklady. All the moms in the neighborhood kept an eye on us. We didn't get away with anything either!

 

My parents raised us, but I had a lot of friends, and usually spent one night a week or so sleeping over at their place. Also, my sisters are a few years older than myself, and my little brother and I were sometimes their "subjects" when my parents went out. They were horrible! LOL!
