How do you handle the issue of a young (under 10) unsaved child who wishes to participate in communion?

Do you allow him/her to participate fully?

Do you as parent share a bit of your own bread and wine, so they get the "idea" of it even if they don't fully understand?

    Do you disallow them altogether?

    Are they believers?

Let the parents use their discernment.

unsaved children (or unsaved adults) should not be allowed Holy Communion.

We do not allow any unsaved person, child or adult to participate.

Okay then, how does that correlate with Matthew 19:13-15? ("let the little children come...)

(btw, what you've said was my first thought as well)

Anyone know that all children are "unsaved"? You believe someone who is not old enough to know the meaning of the Lord's supper would die and go to hell? This is not to argue whether someone should take the Lords Supper, but the accusation of children being "unsaved" as the reason to exclude them. Jesus says to do it in remembrance of Him. If someone is too young to know what it is, they can't do in in remembrance, but does not mean if they were to die they would go to hell.

The context of Matthew 19 has nothing to do with communion.

    You sure?

I'm sure the children who Jesus blessed were to young to fully understand what a wonderful thing it was, yet Christ blessed them anyway.

Children are more than welcome to come to Christ today. I came to Christ as a child, as do many. However, if they have not come to Christ, then they have no reason to celebrate in communion.

We allow no one but baptized Primitive Baptists, of gospel order, to partake of the Lord's Supper.

If they have not joined the church, then they can not participate, whatever the age.

I had a Pastor at a church (SBC) where I used to live who said it was the Lord's table, not his. He would exclude no one. The appropriateness of partaking he said was between the person and God.

Bro. James, how did you explain this to children of your members? Or did you leave it to the parents?

My own church seem to not have a hard and fast rule and I myself was saved so young that I really don't remember what if anything I was told about communion before then. I certainly remember partaking, just not whether or not I'd been saved already.

Today was the first time I had faced this question. My other kid were always in children's church during communion. My youngest is a hip baby though, and is afraid she'll miss something if she doesn't stay in the main service. She was very curious about the whole event. I explained to her that this was something that Christians did only after they were saved and baptized and also a bit about the meaning. I did allow her to taste a bit of my bread and a bit of the juice(although not when the rest of us were eating), which seemed to satisfy her.

Then right in front of us, was a couple who were allowing their even younger child to partake with the church. Made me wonder just what everyone else did/how they felt about it.

To add to dianetavegia's statement, 1 Corinthians 11:28-29, But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

29, For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgement to himself, if he does not judge the body rightly.(NASB)

I learned as a new Christian, that if one partakes of
Communion and holds resentment against another, the partaker brings judgement on himself. Altough I haven't found it in those exact words

Well looky here, I've digressed again, an annoying habit. Maybe someday I will stop doing that.

    You just say "No".

Naturally, they will ask "why?" and this will open a wonderful opportunity to talk to them about placing their faith in Christ for salvation.

Historically speaking children practicing communion is a novelty.
The RCC only started doing it in the early years of the XXth century.

Before my children were saved, I explained to them, "The Lord's supper is for people who have asked Jesus to forgive them, and asked Him to be the Lord of their life. It is wrong for people to take the Lord's supper if they don't know Jesus, just like it would be wrong for a total stranger to pretend to be your friend just so they could have birthday cake."
