The dance floor!

That way of thinking only makes sense if you believe heaven or hell is based on what you do or don't do. If you believe that heaven or hell is the result of accepting or rejecting God's grace, then it's a ridiculous statement.

 

I have heard it from preachers of old. I know most of the sermons that referenced it that way discussed "dance halls" and things of the like. Dance halls were viewed as dens of sin with activities of drinking, cussing and promiscuous dancing (of course it was a whole lot better than dancing today).

I myself don't believe in dancing (just how I was raised) for recreation or even dancing with my husband on a romantic evening (he feels the same) but I certainly am not gonna claim that anyone who dances is dancing on the door to Hell and I also do not believe that dancing is unBiblical. It plainly states in the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:25) "Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing."

I know that is not the only reference to dancing in the Bible either. The way I understand this is that dancing was a sign of jubilation...of celebration...not something where you can rub up against someone while gyrating for mere pleasure. They were probably dancing around shouting praises to God that the beloved son had returned and there is certainly nothing wrong with that.

There are extremes to everything a person will do. Saying that the dance floor is the trap door to hell is one of those extremes. One of my best friends, who is also a pastor's wife, is taking dance lessons for a personal fun time. I certainly don't think she is sinning or on her way to Hell. A lot of the time when it comes to a topic of something like dancing there will always be differing opinions but to say someone is on their way to Hell via the dance floor is quite outlandish.

I probably haven't helped any with my rambling but I was intrigued by the topic and had to put my two or three cents worth.

 

I can find 26 verses in the Bible which speak of dancing but none of them seem to indicate the kind of dancing that goes on in the 20-21st century, that is with couples clutching each other, gyrating and performing before each other, etc.

People around here seem to have a hang-up about dancing and drinking. Almost as if they are trying their hardest to try to justify their behavior and assuage their guilty conscience. If you want to drink and dance, and Holy Spirit isnt
pricking your conscience on the matter then go ahead. You wont go to hell for it. But just the fact that it always comes up seems to be a little Holy Spirit pricking of the conscience else they wouldnt ask.

I remember my Mother telling me not to participate in the dances at school. That they were sinful. She was really upset that the music teacher was teaching us to dance. Sin in my opinion isn't in the dance. It's in what man thinks at the time.
Dancing can be a funfilled expression of Joy and it also can be sexually provocative.
If you think about it sin is all around us. It's even in church on sunday. I believe that's why this is called a world of sin. It's here, we have to face it everyday. With God's help even, I can resist.

isn't it mostly tradition and association. most of the places people would go to dance served alcohol (another traditional no-no) and of cource if you mix alcohol and dancing you get sex.

 

Ask that pastor what a Grange Hall was for. Nobody would get into much trouble when all of the families are there.

Not all dancing involves lewd conduct. What about two steppin and dances like that?

You have it backwards. Those who think drinking and dancing are sin have the hangup, or else they wouldn't go around saying it's sin.

Don't believe the HS is the only one "pricking" the conscience. Baptist's are good at this, too. Growing up, my SBC church beat it into my head that drinking, dancing, and to some extent, women wearing pants, were sin. Only after reading what the Bible had to say did I have freedom from this legalism.

The Holy Spirit convinces us (no pastor, christian, denomination) of sin. John 16:8-9.

 

Iagree with you Dr.Bob I spent many years in dance halls. The only thing i ever got out of a dance hall was farther away from everything God had planned for me

I think people who attack legalism have the hangup, otherwise they wouldn't attack us legalists so much.
