    (My apologies for asking too many questions; the Mods may delete some of my posted questions after being answered.)

    Was it torn in two “before” or “after” Jesus died on the cross?

    Luke 23:44-46

    44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
    45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
    46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

    Matthew 27:50-51

    50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
    51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

    Very clearly the words "before or after" are not apearing, but reading the verses per se the event seems "before" Jesus died in Luke while "after" in Matthew.

    Thanks!

    Mark 15:37-38 I believe would indicate, coupled with your reference, that it was SIMULTANEOUS with his death. This would line up with the significance of the occurrance as well. Notice also Matt.27:50-51...it seems to indicate SIMULTANEOUS dying and renting. Also, Heb.10:20 would indicate that, because his flesh was the veil, that they would be rent at the same time. What do you think?

    Was the rent signifies the actual end of the Old Testament period?

    Interesting question. No one was at both places when each occurred. The record isn't particularly distinct.

    See HEBREWS 9

    The tearing of the veil symbolized the fullfilling of the old covenent and the start of the new covenent.

    I agree with jarhead that it was simultaneous with Christ's death. In the above verses, notice that the time between the "sixth" and "ninth" hour precedes the sun being darkened, the veil being torn, and Christ giving up the ghost. This would indicate that these events happend during that timeframe, and not necessarily apart from each other.

    I agree w/Jarhed and Deacon. The priests on duty in the temple couldn't see the crucifixion, and those at Golgotha couldn't see into the temple. Seeing as none of em was wearing a Rolex, & the sky was darkened so the sun prolly wasn't causing shadows, they had to guesstimate the time. But Jarhed & Deacon have each given very plausible explanations that indicate that Jesus' death & the rending of the veil were simultaneous.

    I have always heard that the tearing of the veil meant that God no longer dwelt in the Holy of Holies, and that He now lived in the hearts of men.

    I do not see a conflict in the verses. I have seen some tragedies in my life time, and if I describe them to you, my description will probably not match, word for word, the description of another witness - yet we will both be accurate.

    If both men stated, word for word, in the same order, every event I would doubt them more for it would be much more like a contrived story. The personal touch of the same story told with some details just a tad off shows it to be what it is. A historical event recalled by various people with a very slight emphasis on different things. Rather than trying to rip it apart, you need to focus on the fact that they do both mention this great event.

    I had always thought the veil tore simultaneous with Jesus's death too. That has always fascinated me. So cool to think of that happening, I think.

    I have always thought it was a simultaneous event and it makes sense. At the death of Jesus the temple building was no longer the place where God chose to let His Spirit dwell but in the hearts of men.

    I look at it a little differently. Christ's work on the cross opened the "holy of holies" up to each of us.

    See Hebrews 10:16ff
    "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

    And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

    Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

    Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

    By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

    And having an high priest over the house of God;

    Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

    Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

    And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:"
