Colossians 2:14 and the 'Record of Debt'

If you redeem something (or someone), you pay a price to get it back. Matt. 5:26. "Assuredly, I say to you, you will not get out of there untill you have paid the last penny." That [figuratively] is the price the Lord Jesus paid to get us out of hell. We were under a curse (v.10); Christ...

Colossians 2:14 and the 'Record of Debt'

Gal 3:13 [NKJV] Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed [is] everyone who hangs on a tree"), Perhaps a bit pedantic, but “redeemed” is not “paid in full” either. Galatians is about who God has purchased, not a debt I owed that...

Colossians 2:14 and the 'Record of Debt'

You are correct that "pay" and "cancel" are not the same thing. But on what basis has the "certificate of debt" been cancelled? It has been cancelled because someone else has paid it off in full (Gal. 3:13; Isaiah 53:5).

What is Propitiation and is it really the heart of the gospel?

I think it might be as well to pause there for a moment. 1 Peter 2:24. 'Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree.' Peter uses the word xulon, 'tree' instead of stauron, 'cross.' In the light of Deut. 21:22-23 and Gal. 3:13, our Lord not only bore our sins in His own body, but...

What is Propitiation and is it really the heart of the gospel?

Ok....let's look at the passages. Did the Father lay upon the Lord Jesus the sins of His people? Yes. ‘And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all’ (Isaiah 53:6). Did the Lord Jesus bear in His body our sins which God laid on Him? Yes. ‘Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the...

What is Propitiation and is it really the heart of the gospel?

I agree with the passages you have provided. I believe they acvomplish their meanings through the surrounding passages and Scripture as a whole. I believe Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures - not according to your theory. The reason you add to Scripture is the "faith once...

What is Propitiation and is it really the heart of the gospel?

I have done it over and over again. You demand one verse, but you are unable to provide one verse that even mentions the word 'Trinity' and no single verse that proves it You say that the concept of the Trinity is found throughout the Bible, and so it is, plenteously. But it is not found so...

The Biblical Basis for Penal Substitution, part 2

In the O.P. on a recently-closed thread, I posted the following: Firstly then, it needs to be shown that our Lord took and bore our sins which God laid on Him. Secondly, that He took them so as to undergo the punishment due to them, and thirdly that He did this on our behalf and instead of us...

THe Biblical Place for Penal Substitution

Yes. Absolutely. But so far everything passage you have mentioned is common to Christianity as a whole. It is not unique to PSA. What you need to provide is a verse stating that God must punish sins, it is a acceptable to punish the just to clear the guilty, Christ experienced God's wrath...

THe Biblical Place for Penal Substitution

I agree with the passage ("punishment" is a liberty, as מוּסַ֤ר means correction or discipline which could be punishment).

THe Biblical Place for Penal Substitution

And here's the third part. Same again. Did the Lord Jesus do this on our behalf and instead of us? Yes. “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29); ‘He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities’ (Isaiah 53:5); “Therefore let it be...

THe Biblical Place for Penal Substitution

The same with the second part. Agree or disagree; explain why from the Bible. Did He take our sins so as to undergo the punishment due to them? Yes. ‘The chastisement [ESV, NIV: ‘punishment’] for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed’ (Isaiah 53:5); “For even the Son of Man...

THe Biblical Place for Penal Substitution

I am strongly opposed to Calvinism, but Penal Substitutionary Atonement seems true, as I understand it. I see PSA as applicable to Unlimited Atonement. Isaiah 53 speaks of Jesus being our substitute, as our sins were transferred to Him, so God crushed Him. He bore all our sins and sicknesses...

THe Biblical Place for Penal Substitution

With all due respect Jon, this is beginning to sound like a Jehovah Witness asking me to provide one verse that proves the Trinity. Seriously, could you sufficiently answer such a question and if you could not, would you then concede that perhaps the trinity might not be biblical after all...
