    The Lottery??

Not gambling but a similar case of legislator chicanery. In the 1980s the Maine legislature created the conservation license plate; for $15 more one would get that nice loon plate, the revenue being split between the chronically underfunded State Parks and the Inland Fisheries & Wildlife Dept...

    The Lottery??

I personally think state lotteries are wrong-headed, though I don't go around criticizing participants. Maine initiated a "cash" lottery in 1974 thru citizen referendum. I voted against. The state later enacted (by referendum) several offshoots, obviously to raise more money. One of those was...

US Senate Seats - How many will flip?

Polls can be misleading, as most folks are aware. In 2020, Sara Gideon was ahead (IIRC by 4-5%) of Collins just before election day. Biden easily took Maine and Collins was comfortably re-elected. I'll wait until Nov. 4. :Biggrin

    Worship Wars?

Some years back our choir was singing the "Hallelujah Chorus" along with a musical recording (sans lyric) when the speakers went silent. Fortunately, we had done enough rehearsing to continue a capella without missing a beat. (Maybe a part of a beat. :Biggrin)

As nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

    Translation Terminology

My favorite back translation story - perhaps apocryphal - involves two Russian translators and Matt 26:41b (omitting "indeed", as it's often quoted), "the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." The first Russian renders that into his own language, then the second one independently renders...

    The Bomb - 8 Aug 45

My (unsaved) son has taught English in southern Honshu (Nagoya area) since 2003 and married a Japanese lady in 2010. Her (late) father was born in 1934 and late in the war was undergoing military training along with many many children of that age bracket. They were doing maneuvers "armed" with...

    Baptism?

I don't understand the "saved millions" comment, either. Just trying to pick his mind.

    Baptism?

While I totally agree that water baptism is a command for those already saved, the context of Craig's "saved millions" may be related to his concern for diseases following immersions in polluted water. Beyond that context, "efficacious for salvation" says faith-plus-works to me.

    Invitation Hymn

When our pastor will be preaching, almost always he will lead the congregational singing. When he is away - vacation/conference/etc - I usually lead, as I'm the loudest and am (usually) on pitch. :Biggrin

Independent Bible churches — your opinion?

The Bible Churches in which I have been connected were all thoroughly baptistic, dispensationalist pre-mil. The South Jersey church where my SIL and family serve was founded in 1865 and I think it's been called a Bible Church in its entire history. They are conservative in doctrine and music...

    Cremation

That would include the (probably few) Christians in downtown Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
