19th century censorship of Walt Whitman

    Heard a lecture . . . Professor said that before 1850 women were not allowed to own property or make a will. Marriage was called "forced prostitution" because most women were "Given (sold) into marriage. The first edition of "Leaves Of Grass." was banned because it mention marriage because the man and woman loved each other. This was against the 19th century social order. Sounds like Baptists were running the country.

    Nope considering the times and location (the major publishers were located in New York City and Boston, Mass.), it was the Puritan influenced Congregationalists and their buddies the Dutch Reformed with the odd Episcopalian thrown in for seasoning.
