Just want to compare my observations with others on this subject. Before I say anything let me start by saying I am in no way implying there is no such thing as ADD (or ADHD), and even though I will talk about the majority I am only refering to my own personal observations.

I have noticed that the majority of people I see who have children with diagnosed ADD or ADHD are the same children whose parents absolutely refuse to discipline them. These children talk back to their parents and the parents try to return their insults with "calm" voices and chalk up their child's attitude to a diagnoses by a doctor.

In the 1970's we saw all kinds of studies coming out about how corporal punishment should be outlawed and discipline is so third world. Now I think the pedulum has swayed too far to the opposite side and you actually have parents affraid to tell their own children NO. I have read an article about a school system, I believe in California, where the children are not allowed to be told they are wrong. If the child says 2+2=5 they are only allowed to say well that could be true if one more were added to it, but there is a better answer for this question.

I think there has been a cultural change that has taken one more responsibility from parenting and resorted to medicated behavioral modification. Who knows what long term effects of this change will have on society, if any (I personally believe there will be).

On a local radio talk show yesterday the discussion was about loosing friends because of their children's behavior and I was just appalled to hear of friends coming over and their children picking up items off the table throwing them at pets and the parent just saying well it is because he has ADD, and not doing anything.

Am I the only one seeing this?

My son was diagnosed ADD in the 6th grade. He is now 28 years old and started having panic attacks, so I started researching and found that adults who were/are ADD also have issues with panic attacks and other disorders as they get older.

I always disciplined my children. I never allowed either one of my kids to run wild and create disturbances. ADD and ADHD and no displine are 2 different things. Some parents try to excuse their bad parenting with illnesses or syndromes. How sad....

    My own personal observations...

For what they are worth... [IMG]

Both my son and I exhibit ADD/ADHD symptoms...

I didn't have too much of a problem in school because I was raised on Coca Cola, a mild stimulant, and was scared straight by the threat of the vice principals paddle... :D

My son had problems in school with keeping up and concentration until we started letting him have a cup of coffee before school...

Coffee is also a mild stimulant...

His grades and behavior both improved...

Understanding my very limited knowledge It would seem to me that most of the kids who are on medication are over medicated and many of the kids medicated don't really have the (medical) problem...

I heard on Focus on the Family, they had an expert on one day, that the reason they give stimulants to calm down ADHD kids is because the behavior problems are a symptom of an inner conflict in which the brain is functioning at Warp speed and the body can't keep up...

Leads to frustration... Which leads to behavior problems...

As for long term 'hangover' effects...

I don't doubt it at all...

As almost any long term drug use makes subtle changes in ones body chemistry...

As someone who was diagnosed with A.D.D./A.D.H.D. when I was 5 years old, I find your statement MOST offensive and typical of the Clueless Christian Crowd <inappropriate comments deleted - LE>(and Yes, I did say that!!!!) I assure you, A.D.D. is a REAL Disablity! I'm 33 and still under a doctor's care.

Yes, I agree there are parent's that just don't discipline their children, No, I wasn't one of them, My mother was very strict with me. I just couldn't concentrate on my Work. simple as that, without proper med's... and even with the med's my ability to process Math was very impaired, I also have a slight form of dyslexia called "discalcula" in which the part of my brain that processes math, just doesn't work properly.

So, next time you open your mouth, please, know what your talking about

    Thank you

I had severe ADHD as a child. I took medicine and several visits with the belt. My parents never used it as an excuse. Many parents today do. I was able to stop taking medicine in the 9th grade, Praise the Lord!

    OK... [IMG]

The importance of a proper diagnosis can not be overstated...

    I just wish that...

Phillipians 4:5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

Was a part of the Hypocratic Oath for modern physicians... [IMG]

And, even though *WE* were raised right...

And, even though *WE* had strong teachers who knew what they were doing...

That doesn't mean that the majority fits that case today...

I think that was the point the original poster was trying to express... At least I hope it was?

Yup, Id say this first paragraph means he is NOT implying that there's no such thing as ADD.

Ive observed the same things, snrsvdbygrc. My hubby is also ADHD and he was helped by a cup of black coffee before school, too. ADD doesn't mean that the child can't learn to have self-control, it just means the parents need to be even more consistent.

The extreme positions, from which I run...

"No such thing" or "Just beat it out of them," etc.

"having trouble focusing or behaving? Here's some psychotropic meds. Have fun!"

Denying it exists is silly. So is prescribing meds right out of the gate, like candy. There's a middle ground.

I believe my parents took the middle ground which was the right thing to do:

    1. Medically, they realized I was different from other kids and medicated me until I didn't need it anymore.

    2. Spiritually, they realized I was just as rebellious as all other kids and disciplined me (beat it out of me :D ).

I am grateful for their most balanced approached that helped me become who I am today.

SpiritualMadMan, I commend you for having the insite and patience to deal with this problem in a remarkable way. Too often I have seen parents who were extremely strict and who would whip their children constantly for problems which I am sure the children needed more than just discipline, how sad.

Is it common for ADD to be unable to form opinions, just spin off of the words of everyone else, and then you always have that inner battle betwween them?

    Uncharted,

not really. [IMG] That sounds more like just being young. [IMG]

ADD/ADHD people will oftentimes sound more disjointed and rambling when they speak, at least to people who aren't used to it. What they say can also tend to be taken wrong by others. ADD is not a disorder, it is a different way of responding to the world around them. It is also described as being a "hunter" mentality rather than the more common "gatherer" mentality. When placed under stress they become super focused, to the exclusion of all else. This can be very frustrating for the wife....lol [IMG]

Id also like to clarify, when I said parents need to be more consistent, I was referring to all areas, not just consistent in discipline. I liked how Joseph Botwinick described what was needed. I thought that was excellent.

Mom, is there any medication that removes being young from your system? Or some meditation or technology i could do so I could already have the facts streaming into me before the 'reporters' get to them so I can from righteous opinions?

    Uncharted,

If there were such a medication I wouldn't want you to take it! [IMG]

I think as you grow you first learn how to defend opinions. Then you find that lots of "your" opinions are actually someone else's, and that's when you start researching on your own in order to figure out what your own opinion really is. It might not change, you might find that you agree with those you are following. That's ok.
You also might find that you disagree. That's ok, too.

You're doing just fine, my friend!

    So are you ADHD?

Well, I know best what is in my head. People who deny that ADD exists are generally folks who can concentrate, unlike those of us who can't. And don't tell me my problem is not discipline or laziness........I am successful in business, I have more graduate hours than you do, and I don't use it as an excuse for anything. But I know what's in my head, and I know that it takes tremendous effort for me to do what others can do as easy as breathing.

Is ADD overdiagnosed and overmedicated? Sure. But that doesn't mean it's non-existent. There are statistically valid tests that show it.

Nope, no H, just ADD. But in our acting for animators class we came up with this skit called "The Attention Deficit Assistant Drector." We go some laughs out of it, but moreso in our group than from the audience.
The other problem is I get too bored in doing research on the topic thats been disected already for days, or I never have the time to? am i just to ignore everything?
