Just want to compare my observations with others on this subject. Before I say anything let me start by saying I am in no way implying there is no such thing as ADD (or ADHD), and even though I will talk about the majority I am only refering to my own personal observations.
I have noticed that the majority of people I see who have children with diagnosed ADD or ADHD are the same children whose parents absolutely refuse to discipline them. These children talk back to their parents and the parents try to return their insults with "calm" voices and chalk up their child's attitude to a diagnoses by a doctor.
In the 1970's we saw all kinds of studies coming out about how corporal punishment should be outlawed and discipline is so third world. Now I think the pedulum has swayed too far to the opposite side and you actually have parents affraid to tell their own children NO. I have read an article about a school system, I believe in California, where the children are not allowed to be told they are wrong. If the child says 2+2=5 they are only allowed to say well that could be true if one more were added to it, but there is a better answer for this question.
I think there has been a cultural change that has taken one more responsibility from parenting and resorted to medicated behavioral modification. Who knows what long term effects of this change will have on society, if any (I personally believe there will be).
On a local radio talk show yesterday the discussion was about loosing friends because of their children's behavior and I was just appalled to hear of friends coming over and their children picking up items off the table throwing them at pets and the parent just saying well it is because he has ADD, and not doing anything.
Am I the only one seeing this?
