About how many years ago was Jesus on earth?
How old was the world then?
What was the average lifespan of people when he was on earth?
About how long after his ascension was the last book of the Bible written?
How long was the total time between when the earth started and that last book was written?

About how many years ago was Jesus on earth?

    2000

How old was the world then?

I'm no geologist, but isn't 4.5 billion years the standard estimate?

What was the average lifespan of people when he was on earth?

Clearly some people lived to advanced years in the first century. (See for instance the Prophet Anna in Luke 2.) It's very probable that many people who managed to survive into adulthood and avoid military service could see their sixties and seventies. Factoring out the infant mortality though, the average lifespan was probably around 45 or so.

About how long after his ascension was the last book of the Bible written?

    Sixty years or so.

How long was the total time between when the earth started and that last book was written?
    Gina

    4.5 billion years?

    Why these particular questions?

    rsr,

I think one of those sites is one of the ones I double-checked. I was taking a few things into account:

    - the bibilical record of senior citizens and Jesus' 70-year estimate

    - the general belief that Jewish hygeine and dietary laws led to better health and sanitation

    - the absence of major wars around the time of Jesus' life

I've seen estimates all around the world from 20 to 50, and I'm not sure one is more reliable than the other. Figures that ignore infant mortality are probably the most helpful because the infant mortality rate was so high.

    Joshua

P.S. My earlier post should have said "factoring out the infant mortality rate."

I get complicated with the age of the world, because I cannot calculate the time Adam and Eve were in the garden until they sinned and were kicked out. So it would be approximatley 8-12000 years plus this time.

No problem. It was my fault for not proofing better. Generally speaking, when people ask about life expectancy the question is "How long could someone who lived back then have expected to live?" In my opinion, infant mortality rates skew those figures because someone who lived long enough to ask themselves that question would already be in an entirely different statistical category.

A few reasons...mainly because I'm just curious. I'm trying to get a general grasp on a time frame for all the events on earth, how it goes together and fits in with stuff, how things changed and why, just for curiosity and learning in general, there's no specific meaning in particular to the questions, I was just reading some Baptist history stuff and the questions came to me.
These things interest me, I'm weird I guess, what else is new? [IMG]

If He were born circa 4 BC, it would be about 2000.
In my opinion, 4 to 10 thousand years old, depending on how we view the Genesis genealogy. I have seen a few theories that would allow up to maybe 15 to 20 thousand. But if we accept the account literally, it's pretty hard to get anywhere into the billions, unless one is a gap-theorist. Check out Tony Warren's The Biblical Time Line of Creation for an interesting read.
    I defer to the knowledge of Joshua & rsr on this, and agree on factoring out the infant mortality rate. {translation - I don't know :D }
If Revelation were as late as AD 100, which seems reasonable to me, it would be about 70 years.
10,174 years, roughly! Give or take a year or two! ;) [IMG]

How old was the world then? about 4000 years old (Not 7000-12000 or 4.5 billion) The best archaeological evidence has his time as around 1400-2100 BC. The Bible has Abraham living about 2000-2200 years after creation thus creation was about 4000 years BC.
What was the average lifespan of people when he was on earth? Don't know
About how long after his ascension was the last book of the Bible written? about 60 years.
How long was the total time between when the earth started and that last book was written? about 4090 years

    1. About 1975 years ago, i.e. ascending to heaven circa 28 AD. Born in Betlehem according to flesh circa 5 B.C. Lived some 33 years plus, then died, now lives forevermore.
    2. Around 4000 years
    3. Don't know
    4. According to the classical dating I would answer 68 years, i.e. Revelation written about 96 AD.
    5. Close to 4100 years

Thank you everyone. [IMG] That helps put things in perspective.
Just as an off thought because of those that said billions and such, what is earth made up of? How are rocks formed? There IS a point to that question, I promise. [IMG]

There is a lot of evidence to put the earth at no more than 7-10,000 years old. The estimates of 4.5 billion, while are still quoted but some who learned them in the 70's and 80's are really not current thought. The moon is moving away at an 1.5 inches annually, 4.5 billion years ago it would have been on top of us. The rings of saturn can't be more than 7,000 years old or they would be smooth. Based on the amount of Hydrogren in the atmosphere, the earth shouldn't be more than 8-10,000 years old... and so on and so on.
Dr. Bob and I might not agree on Women's sports bbut we do on this. BTW Dr. Bob, Pastor St. Lawrence sends his greetings.

Remember when you are doing the life-span thing, that in the preflood days people lived a lot longer.

Gina, I think Barry's material on this might help:
    http://www.ldolphin.org/barrychron.html

We have found a math error in the early section on the missing Sabbaths (the 70 year exile), so feel free to skip those two short sections.

All the way at the bottom is a chart which might help.

ITM, the last book of the Bible to be written was Revelation, about year 95 according to most scholars. Arguments have been presented, however, for earlier dates from the time of Vespasian (rather than Domitian), or sometime between 69-79. Considering that John was on Patmos and that he seems to have lives a fairly long life, 95 A.D. is a real possibility.

At any rate, all books of the Bible were finished before the first century was out.

    Really kewl link Helen, thanks!
Now, help my simple mind on something else. [IMG]
If God created everything in such a short time, he created it fully. There were rocks, gold, diamonds, dirt, etc., wouldn't that really throw off any scientific type of dating if they say such and such takes x amount of years to form or develop, but God created it already fully developed?

    Hey Gina,
You can find the answers to most of your questions at these websites:

    www.AnswersinGenesis.org
    www.icr.org

I would like to comment on the 4.5 billion years theory. For a Christian to suggest this is to reject the Genesis account of Creation and thus call God a liar. Of course we would have to hold off on that debate until the other forum is opened up on Saturday February 1. Two days from now, or is it two thousand years or two billion years?

    Huh?

I am not trying to enter the age debate, but this one puzzles me.

    1.5 inches per year X 4 500 000 000 years = 6 750 000 000 inches

    6 750 000 000 inches X (1 ft / 12 inches) = 562 500 000 ft

    562 500 000 ft X (1 mile / 5280 ft) = 106 500 miles

    230 000 miles [current approx. orbital distance] - 106 500 miles = 123 500 miles

123 500 miles is still more than half the current distance and is about 6 times the Roche limit.

At 1.5 inches per year you would have to go back in time about 9 billion years to get inside the Roche limit and nearly 10 billion to get to "touching."

Reminds me of the professor who declared the world would end in ten billion years.

The anxious student asked the question: "Professor, could you repeat that?"

"Ten billion years and the world will end."

"Oh, that's a relief. I thought you said ten million years. I was worried!"

Time is limitless to God, as are his abilities to create as He pleases. If He chose to create a flea in the same time span He created an elephant, it is of no concern to me. The important thing is that He does all thing well...........and it was good.

    Cheers,

    Jim
