As for his printer and fax, he will need to download the drivers for them. He can find them on the manufacturers' web sites.

Did he reformat to install XP, or did he just upgrade? If he formatted, he'll need to download and install the motherboard drivers as well. They can be found on the manufacturer's site.

If he doesn't know who the manufacturer is, have him download Belarc Advisor (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Belarc_Advisor_d1385.html) -it's free.

Norton is stubborn. Try the uninstall option, then reboot into Safe Mode and delete it through the Add/Remove Programs option in the Contriol Panel. He may have to comb the reistry as well (safer bet would be to download and use TweakNow once he has rebooted after removing Norton -http://www.majorgeeks.com/TweakNow_RegCleaner_d4134.html, also free).

AVG and Avast are both good anti-virus programs, and both are free. I use Computer Associates' ezArmor suite (firewall/antivirus). Have him check it out at http://home.ca.com/dr/v2/ec_main.entry25?page=ARTrialwareLandingPage&client=ComputerAssociates&sid=35715.

In my opinion, I would be very very cautious about using Norton Anti Virus, my experience has been that it is impossible to get rid of, you will most likely have to take it down to dos and reload it all back on again.

AVG anti virus is one of the web's best kept secrets, check it out, that is good advice!

It has a removal tool especially for Norton. I had to use it myself last week to remove Norton so that I could re-install it. It worked great!!!

 

fdisk works pretty good to remove software!

 

Personal Opinion reformatting and then installing XP and Nortons on your hard drive will give you a clean slate. It will clean up those programs that you have long since forgotten and clean out your registry. Just a thought.

it would probrably conflict with the software already on your hardrive, ie: norton.
Instead, how about you use trend micros *Housecall* ... it is web based and is VERY efficient..it finds viruses that norton misses and is probrably better than most other anti viruses out there. IMO it is better than Norton. But to run housecall every now and then while keeping Norton, can only be a good thing... here is the link.
