A great answer for the question on the difference between spiritual songs, hymns, etc

About twenty years ago, a new choir member at my church gave the director copies of one of Handel's coronation anthems. He had used white out to cover over all of the words of the anthem, and he had written in Christmas words. In early December, one of our college students came to choir for the first time since summer. When he saw what had been done to the music, he said,"What fool did this?" The reply came from the chair next him, "Well, actually, I did." He said later he was hoping the floor would just open up and swallow him. :tonofbricks:

We have to tell the story every so often because someone will make a reference to white out, and those of us who were around when it happened just howl with laughter. :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

It's still the same argument. What makes a song spiritual? Or, what criteria do you use to know whether or not the singer is "spirit filled"?

 

Well, okay. Here's what I've been thinking about recently. I was watching a teenage Christian Rock band, and then it kind of hit me. Really, to me, it didn't sound joyful or glorious. It was just a regular bunch of teenagers moving around to a catchy rhythm. I realize they wern't exactly the Rolling Stones, but it doesn't mean it wouldn't be possible for them to turn in that direction. Actually, the Rolling Stones were just a bunch of teenager too, at one point. So, would I let my child perform a song like that in church? I just don't think I would. Maybe it's just instinct at this point, but something about it bothers me. I don't think someone that young is spiritually mature enough to handle a Rock and Roll lifestyle. Look at how many of the Rolling Stones contempararies were dead by the time they were thirty? Does that make sense, then?
