Someone sent me the quote below. I don't know the source.

“I humbly ask - where are the men of God who tremble at His Word; who preach it straightforwardly; who live it uncompromisingly; who walk circumspectly; who have a bold orthodoxy and a countenance clothed with humility; who worship in the Spirit of God, glory in Christ Jesus and place no confidence in the flesh; who pray with expectancy; who lead with servant-authority; who are strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus; who will not play politics with God and man; who are not swayed by the promise of financial gain; who will not be enticed by the temporal contingencies of men; who strive not for prominence, power, position, praise, or promotion; who do not consider their lives of any account as dear to themselves, so that they may finish their course and the ministry which they received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God?”

I'm not following you Jim. Are you saying that you believe the person who wrote this quote is "sitting in their self righteous, priggish chairs,,,,,wishing"?

I know quite a few of those kind of men. Some of them are here on this board. Some I have served with. Some I have worked for.

I know that I could not stand and honestly say that was me...I fall far short, but by God's mercy continued to minister all my life.

    Cheers,

The quote sounds like something A.W.Tozer would often say.

Ah, but Tozer talked less about it and demonstrated it in his personal life. Oh, to be a Tozer. He even died on his knees in prayer.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    Jim,

You seem to be, at least indirectly, suggesting the author (whoever it is) was wrong for writing this.

"Tozer talked less about it and demonstrated it in his personal life."

Tozer often encouraged others in faith and good works. Why oppose this person's attempt to do the same?

    Blessings,

Aren't they all on the BB?

    Jim,

Why do you always suppose anyone who talks about something doesn't do it? I have not found this to be true in at least 50% of the people I know. As a FWB pastor, people always tell me we should be servants instead of practicing "Feet Washing". Why can't we do both? Why can't the author of this question practice it himself? I don't know who he is or what kind of life he lives. So why would I make assumptions that he does or does not do what he is asking?

The "mystery author" is Steve Camp, fussing about Mark Driscoll.

Pastor David, I am suggesting it is easier to write these things than to actually live them. I don't know who wrote that quote. I knew Tozer well enough that he would not claim it for himself even though I may claim it for him.

For myself, I could prolly write more freely of my short-comings than my righteousness. That is all.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Thank you Jerome. I am familiar with Mr. Camp and have benefitted from some of his works. I could see him writing this.

    webdog,

It is not gossip to discuss a person's public statements. Furthermore, there's nothing inherent in the quote I posted that refers to anyone in particular - thus excluding it as gossip in any sense. The accusation of spreading gossip is a serious charge that should not be dealt out carelessly. The quote in it's original context was intended to serve as an exortation and encouragement to faithfulness to God in ministry for all people. To read anything else into it is looking for something that simply isn't there.

    Regards,

My comment was in regards to "fussing over Driscoll". If this is the case, it would be gossip.

    webdog,

That is simply not true. Mark Driscoll is a very prominent pastor. Just like I could expect people to comment or even criticize my words - those spoken in a public setting - Driscoll's words are fair game as well. But this still misses the point and the thrust of the quotation. Go back and read it. It mentoned nothing about Driscoll. The post itself doesn't mention him at all. The only thing that does is a passing comment whose opinion it is that, in a quote that doesn't mention the man, it is "fussing over Driscoll". This is hardly enough evidence to accuse someone of gossip. I would merely caution you against accusing someone of gossip solely based on three words from a third person. Your accusations of gossip could very well become real gossip themselves.

    Blessings,

Pastor David, you are not in the wrong in the least. You're not guilty of anything some are charging you with -- talk about building a mountain out of a molehill! It was a good quote -- nothing wrong with it.There is no substance to the "gossip" accusation.
