A KJVOnlyism...

The following was presented to me as proof that the KJV is the only true Word of God by a series of questions:

"The 'King James', how many letters does that contain?" "9." "That's right, 9!!!"

"1611, how much do those 4 digits add up to?" "9." "That's right, 9!!!"

(man, I was SMOKING this test!!!!) :laugh:

"How many months is a womans full term pregnancy?" "9." (bear with me) "That's right, 9!!!"

"What chapter in Acts was Paul saved?" "The 9th." "That's right, the 9th!!!"

(I think there was another one, but I cannot recall what it is right now, but I think it had something to do with Genesis 9:1)

His conclusion:

"We can see 9 is God's number of fruitfulness, therefore the KJB is the only true Bible!"

...and it was an Independent Baptist preacher that gave me this test.

I got all the questions correct but failed to believe the end.

Is this proof?

Has anyone else been confronted with silly illogical "proofs" like this used to prove the KJV is the only true Word of God? Or is this just the tip of the iceberg, and there are many more things like this that prove it and it alone is the only true Bible?

Many silly people believe silly things. This "test" isn't indicative of enough KJVO people to even be worth mentioning.

I think it's of great interest that you go in and out of threads telling others that you put others on ignore. Often. The fact apparently is that you can't handle truth or anyone who would oppose you, and if another behaves as you, well, you can't handle that so off to "ignore land" or "killfile" they go. That's weak, my friend :laugh:

Grow some thick skin maybe?

Anything to add, or just some name-calling or pejorative comments? Address the OP as a man and leave out the boorish behavior.

What I've presented is factual reality and what others believe. If you can't add anything to this in a mature, and Christian manner, why not just take off and go advertise your character somewhere else?

Happens across the board. The same kind of stuff is attempted by a lot of the WoF people we encounter in our neck of the woods.

This is why education is, imho, the silver bullet for ignorant (not stupid) theological pursuits. Once you learn about the basic nature of history, theology, and biblicism you can move beyond dogmatic entrapment and into growth.

The syllogism breaks down at the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy in that just because something appears one way doesn't necessitate the outcome that ascribe to it. It is a sad attempt at a coherent debate that, again, never gets beyond the English language.

So are they really saying that the only Bible for the world and all Christians is one which has been done in a language that the vast majority of believers (at the eschaton) would never have encountered? Foolishness.

A couple of years ago I met a fellow from Tennessee that claimed to be a "circuit walker". He said he had been called by God to go to different churches and tell them that they need to return to the truth of the Gospel.

A church nearby here agreed to let him preach a service, and he fretted all week as to what scripture to use. He called me daily and asked for help.

Sunday morning came and he showed up at my house at 9am, He was so drunk he couldn't stand up much less go and preach.

My point? People come up with all kinds of weird ways of professing to be a preacher, pastor, or evangelist. Some of them are completely nuts.

This guy I knew was nuts, but I didn't think his silly story justified a thread on BB. The preacher with the "9" theory is also nuts, so why start a thread about him.

Maybe I should start a thread about that SBC megachurch out in California where you can go to a "Yoga" worship service where you can stretch while you hear the Word, or sit in the "Cafe" worship service where you get your own candlelit table with tea and scones, or attend a "Singles" worship service where you can hook up with a date while you hear the Word.

To me, these are extreme and just as silly as the "9" preacher, but I don't pass judgement on the whole of the SBC because of them.

Nice response, and I agree with your assessment.

I concur that the problem is educational (ignorance based). But it goes a little further than this too, as you well know. Those who embrace this mentality have been conditioned to believe this way. They certainly did not learn this at the foot of the cross, but were instead indoctrinated to believe these things from other preachers, laymen, and by other means.

The end result is an arrogance typically towards others, superiority, phariseeism, anger, and disdain for anything that might educate one in another more fruitful direction.

Recovery for such persons must be a very difficult task. In some KJVO churches, I could say for certain they have what some would call "toxic faith." This is true of WoF also.

Anyhow, I would love to hear from some who came out of this, how they did it, and why.

Preacher, when I was down south I visited several IFB churches that were extreme. We simply didn't go back.

And we did find as many good churches as we did extreme ones.

Up here in Maine, there are several good churches in my area and only one Hyles camp church. I do hear of another Hyles camp church several towns ove but have never been to it so I can't say for sure.

Although I appreciate your response, I don't see how it is helpful.

This "9" preacher isn't a lone wolf. There are several who believe this, so it is not an isolated incident.

Also, I would not call him "nuts" which is unnecessary and a worldly practice of the flesh. Although he held to this, he was still a soul-winner and evangelistic. I can talk about the issues without having to resort to name-calling and pejoratives. Can you?

Many sincere BRETHREN believe things such as this, and this thread is an attempt to discuss the issues, examine the issues, not to call names and ridicule one another.

Can you do that or should you just step away and contribute something positive elsewhere?

I don't know what other term would define him accurately, you have to admit that there is some pretty skewed thinking going on in his head.

7 is the perfect number.

Now, we take the ESV. The ESV was translated in 2001. If you add the numbers you have 3. 3 Is for the Trinity. Now, if you take the total number of digits (4) and add that to the 3, you get 7. The perfect number!

So the ESV is the only perfect Bible!

Let me see here, how shall I add this up?

N = 14 (which is two 7's, which makes it twice as good as the ESV. )

A = 1.

S = 19.

B = 2.

So add this all together, and you get 36!!!! Take 3 6's and you get 6, 6, & 6...oh no, wait. Maybe 3 x 6? :laugh:

Most novel answer to KJVO was when i was told by a pastor that "If it was good enough for Moses, good enough for me!"

My main problem not with those holding to prefering the KJV if they honestly believe based upon textual criticism that the TR text better than CT, but big problem if they extend that to saying KJV ONLY version, God word for today!
